Hi, as per the title, I recently replaced my r9 280x with a GTX970 and I've had this audio problem since ( I dont have it with the r9 280x)
Basically, I hear a buzzin (EMI) noise thru my headphones on 3d apps (games, google earth)

1. My soundcard is Creative Soundblaster Z
2. Used both my Audiotechnica and Grados and the sound is there
3. I have disabled onboard audio
4. Buzzing sound is there whether I plug thru front panel jack or directly to the headphone jack of my soundcard

It would be electrical interference from the video card.  I don't think there is much you can do about it.  I have it pretty bad too and I always figured a sound card would help, but I guess not...

Can you move the audio card to a different slot? If the 970 has coil whine it could be causing interference from something called spurious radiation coming from the chokes on the video board.

THanks, let me try when I get back.
Just to note, the r9 280x had terrible coil whine, this 970, if it has, which I dont notice,is much less

This is pretty accurate. If the sound card or audio processor does not have proper/enough shielding you can get interference from other electrical components. This is the main reason why I never recommend using front panel audio headers. External Dac/AMPs are the best way to go especially if you are using head headphones.

I was going to say the same as i've the same card only the FTW+ , not much difference but i have the same issue. So i'm going to upgrade my monitor soon with the new asus MX34 its got a built-in DAC internally. A DAC is probably your best bet for your solution.

Am I right to conclude that the 970 produces more interference than the 280x? Same cards, same audio cards, same location etc.. Only change is the graphics card and I get this on my headphone

So I solve the annoying coil whine know my 280x but have this bigger problem on my 970 =(

This is really disappointing.. Does that mean Evga didn't factor this in the design of the card?

I'm frustrated because I took the risk on buying the Evga even though it's not local warranty (I'm in Singapore and Evga rma is in taiwan) whereas I could have gotten a palit, Mai or zotac or any card with local warranty where rma is easier

Anyway, is the Asus u7 considered an external dac? It's a USB sound card

Yes, USB sound card is an external DAC.

DAC stands for digital to analog converter. USB is digital and is external to your computer. The noise should go away if you use a USB sound card.

Unfortunately it is a bit hard to say if you would or would not have the same issue with a different card or different manufacturer.
As mentioned I would suggest move the sound card to a different pci-e slot further from the card.

More info about your system hardware might be helpful, but sometimes noise like that can occur over the PCIe bus if the PCIe x16 link speed is not set correctly in the BIOS..If there's a BIOS setting for it, try manually changing it to a different Gen (Gen3, Gen2)..Just a thought.

Ive fixed the issue but moving the sound card 1 slot away from the graphics card. so far so good. I cant believe moving 1 slot can make a difference
