Nothing really more then for looks, if you like the look of backplates. Also gives the card some protection.

I have one and I look at it this way. It protects the card from dust and damage. In my case the side that is facing up has all of the exposed circuits. The side with the logo and cover faces downward. Why it is that way who knows. I have a EVGA X58 FTW3 M board. So I think it is pretty short money ($20) to protect a over $500 GPU. What I don't understand is why doesn't EVGA just build it with the back plate and why oh why do they ALWAYS have to ship anything, even a $10 item by UPS that requires an adult signature? Newegg has shipped me thousands of dollars of stuff without requiring a signature.

I don't see an additional pci-e power plug on that board. If you're running three high power graphics cards you might want to use the power boost for peace of mind.

i don't recommend power boost unless you're running SLI with extreme OCs. As you add cards to the PCIe slots they can each take up to 75W through the slot... add it up and with enough cards it could cause power delivery to be less than stable or efficient. The power boosts adds more juice to the PCIe lanes to ensure cleaner power delivery. If you fall into this extreme category it might be beneficial. But for 1 or 2 cards in SLI... unless youre doing extreme modding... it isn't really needed. The backplates just look awesome. They protect the card and help distribute some of the heat but aren't really there for cooling purposes... just for looking hot purposes.

I got the backplates so I wouldn't accidently damage anything on the circuit board. I'm pretty clumsy, lol.

Sorry to thread hijack but I got my 570 plate today and was wondering about the foam around the square opening. Does it stay or do I remove it? Anyways, I got mine for pure aesthetics although some report a degree or two drop in temps.

You can increase the cooling effect of the backplate by adding a small dab of "Arctic Ceramique" thermal paste (or other non-conductuve paste...) to each mounting point between the backplate and PCB, and screw threads. It works ...seriously.

We buy expensive cards with elaborate covers yet the aesthetic immediately goes to waste as they mount upside down in the case. Why?

Anyways, I got mine for pure aesthetics although some report a degree or two drop in temps. You mean, should you remove the thermal pad that offers the only significant means of heat transfer? LOL, yup, leave it there. It serves a purpose! But I recommend heating your serial number sticker slightly so the adhesive will release from the card. When the thermal pad heats up it make the sticker dark and greasy which isn't fixable. For any RMAs you need that sticker on the card so I removed mine gently leaving it intact and just reaffixed it to the inside of the shroud where the blower fan won't suck it in.

Hey Keram36--when I got my back plate for a 580 there was a kind of soft pad adhering to it about a couple of inches square--right over where the GPU would line up I think. I wondered what it was for--should it be left in place? I thought that if it was touching the GPU it would trap heat maybe. So I called EVGA tech about it. The tech rep told me that I should remove it, and so I did. It made me wonder why it was there in the first place, and I'm not saying you are wrong. Just trying to get the right info--don't think I could find it anymore anyways, but I am setting up a second card soon.

It is also the same height from the backplate as the screw holes are. The foam should sit on the card just fine at that level. It's there to keep the backplate from touching the solder spots around the gpu and may even aid in cooling like mwparrish suggest in his post. Here is the guide to install them http://www.evga.com/produ.s/pdf/M020-00-000215.pdf I see nothing that states to remove the foam padding.

Kram36--you mistook my meaning. The foam pad was maybe about 1.5"x1.5" in surface are is what I meant (2 inches was probably a bit too large). In thickness it was probably a couple of mm. Anyways, an EVGA tech told me to remove it. Guess I will have to call them again on this one--thanks. Edit: I just looked at the link. I had a GTX 480 before the 580. The foam pad on the 480 did not have a hole in the center as in the picture, but was solid. I did not use it. I honestly don't remember the design of the 580 pad--if it had that hole or cut out. If I had seen it like that I probably would have left it on--so I might have to check my card as I can't remember now for sure. i.e. I may be confusing my memory of the installation of the back plate on the 480 with what I did on the 580. Second EDIT: Just got off the line with EVGA--the tech rep said that there was no issue re shorting if the pad is removed as the little plastic bumpers will keep everything separated, but did state that the pad is to help dissipate heat. He went on to say that with the 5 series the back plates are really more just for looks, whereas with the 4 series heat was more of an issue and the back plates could help to alleviate that a bit with them. He described the 'pad' as being somewhat like a thermal paste in function. Thanks again.

Could also protect with warp or flexing. Mostly aesthetic.
