Yeah I have to say I'm not surprised. I was hoping they would let it slide though.

Well it is not just Intel putting a stop to this, as this is executed in BIOS "Said microcode update is pushed through a BIOS update from the motherboard vendor." "if you don’t update your BIOS, overclocking the BCLK feature – stays for as long as you have the motherboard."

Didn't they do this on the 3820 (non K) series?

not suprised but it kills skylake being worthwhile over haswell now, as it made sense to get a cheaper skylake and OC it for the boost from a locked haswell, now you might as well just buy a K series haswell

They limited the multiplier that you can use, but you can still overclock it a lot. I run 24/7 4.9GHz.

I think this is exactly what Intel is hating, and why they're trying to add other "constraints" so that we can't do this.

Intel: want to overclock? Get a K processor (or the X-something chipset processor) oh and buy the OCer's warranty upgrade too (do they still offer that?)

I don't get why Intel is doing this. Don't they already have a huge market share? aren't people already buying their K and X lines despite the fact that even the lower ones can overclock too?

I think that was the point of this article, that Intel is not liking how people buy the cheaper processor and overclock it beyond it's limitations. So, they're trying to add more setbacks on the "non K line" to where you cough up more money just so you will buy the K processor.

It's not fair for guys who payed 40-50$ more for K models if all later people overclock cheaper models. On Amazon i7-6700 cost 360$ and i7-6700K cost 400$. For 40$ more, actually 35$ customers could pull even 600-700MHz more. 500MHz more easy. That's not small difference, special because processors are strong and on default settings and no place for hard feeling. If someone want to pay almost 400$ for CPU than 35$ more for so big improvements is nothing.

The reason people here might be agitated by it is because all it takes for Intel to slap a K and to make it so you can overclock the processor is a flip of a button. And, there you go.. you got your K processor. And they charge more for that. Seriously, that's just greed coming from Intel. And honestly, a waste of material, time, energy, and resources that could be used for other things. Just make all the processors "K", and call it a day.

Because overclocking is such a niche thing that they can strong arm that faction of their customer base. They see no value in it, so they lock it out.

Yep, unfortunately, I was actually thinking about buying an i3 6320 in the next couple of months to clock to 5GHz+ for 24/7 usage, but not going to kick up $$$ for a K CPU. I guess my upgrade got pushed back lol.
