I'm planning on heading to Microcenter later today and I need advice as to which path I should take. I currently have the a FX 8350 (had it for about 2 years now) and a Gigabyte 990FX Ud3 (rev 1) board and a GTX 680. I'm pretty sure my board is giving me issues so I want to change some hardware. This issue is, I don't know if I should just change out the board and update the card with the possibility of changing to AMD's new stuff at the end of the year OR If I should just make the switch now to Intel. FYI, I'm not trying to spend more than $1200.

Thoughts anyone?

AMD 8350 @ 4.5GHz
Corsair H80i Cooler
ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR V FORMULA-Z
ZOTAC GTX 980I AMP!
Corsair 16GB RAM @2400MHz (8GB x2)
Windows 10 Home 64 bit
Thermaltake 850 Watt Power Supply
HAF 912 case

Keep in mind that if you go with the new i5 you will likely have to buy new RAM too as most of the boards take DDR4. I would suggest the previous gen i5 if you wanted to go that route as there isnt much of a performance difference, parts will be cheaper, and you can keep your RAM. For most games you may not gain a lot in terms of gaming performance since they're GPU dependent but if you play anything that is CPU dependent like Civ 5 that's where you will see the difference.

As far as graphics cards go the GTX 970 is pretty beastly on 1080p and does well at 1440p too. The GTX 980 would really shine at higher resolutions over the 970 and you will see more of a performance gain upgrading to a better GPU over the CPU (for most games).

So keeping the FX-8350 (in the event I stay with AMD) and going with the 980 would be the logical choice?

If your board is giving you problems and you have been thinking about switching to Intel, now would be the time to do it.  I agree about getting the last gen and using your existing RAM plus getting the single best GPU you can afford.
