I build a lot of budget computers for other people and I was using TigerDirect for years as their barebones kits were considerably cheaper than other places. I never had a problem with mail in rebates and they were easy to work with. I use Newegg for stuff for me but is there any other good options out there besides Amazon, Newegg, Microcenter and Frys that offer a good price on cheaper builds?

My "local" microcenter is 50 min away (over 1.25 with bad traffic). I'd rather drive out there than step into a BestBuy, which is 15 min away. If I absolutely need it that day, I will make that drive.
Microcenter has some of the best prices on processors. The staff is helpful when custom building from scratch if you don't know much about building a pc. If you have never been inside one, I suggest taking a trip just to walk around. They have just about everything you need.

My first stop is NewEgg. From there I can check prices from their competitors using a Firefox extension called 'Hover Hound' to see what I can save on by buying elsewhere. Amazon and NCIX is included in the price check list. I am finding more and more specialty parts and PC components at Amazon and the occasional slightly higher price is offset by the free two-day Prime shipping. The thing about Amazon is you don't know for sure if they're going to charge you tax or not until you submit your order.

Amazon. Always great deals and 2 day shipping while Prime member is great.

If I'm hasty and want something right away, BestBuy, because they're an EVGA distributer, although they don't carry the greatest PSUs from EVGA.

Most of the time, I get stuff from Newegg the next day even with free shipping since I am so close. I just liked how Tiger Direct had their barebones section so I didn't have to go to sites to research compatible ram and everything else. I actually liked all the mail in rebates too since customers always just let me deal with mailing everything in and I could pocket the rebates.

I have time to research since the last person I was going to build something for just told me he is "just going to by a used mac"  on the positive side he let me keep his system; complete with 256Mb of Ram, 1.4 amd single core and a 60 gig hard drive.

    YES!!
Sounds like my 1st system I made about 15 years ago. Except I had 2 gigs of ram in it, and had a PNY 6800GT. lol

Sounds close to the Dell GX620 I have sitting here. CPU: unknown probably pentium. HDD: 60 GB. RAM 2 GB (not enough to install Windows 7 or 10) stuck with XP.

You misunderstood my Northern VA traffic joke.  (15 miles take at least 1 hour)

I like Micro Center, have shopped at several over the years. Denver, N VA, Baltimore ....

The only thing stopping me from spending more at MC is the "in store only" -- stuff.

My nearest MC is about 100 miles away, so no special trips when I can get it shipped to my frond door elsewhere - for an equivalent price.

Staff is indeed "helpful" in my experience  in finding their inventory.  I've never needed to get their technology assistance as I've done my homework.

Yep,  I've got a few door stops laying around.

What to do with the old stuff?  I prefer to give away most, if they are not antiques - to a local charity.  Some times to someone in need that will appreciate a running computer, even if it is not a gaming machine.  There is always recycling - but they have made it harder to do in the last year --- less places to take it now.  Can't even give away a nice 21 inch CRT

    As far as Amazon......

The only thing that drives me up the wall about Amazon, is when I search with a Mfg & part number and they insist on peppering my results with horse apples that are not what I searched on.

You see an interesting price -- check the fine print-- suddenly realize it is not the part you wanted.  Amazon should clearly separate "suggestions" that are "similar" to your search.

Ahh. I get it now. Like the time me and the wife went to DC and got there Friday about 3 or 4PM. It took 6 hours to get there (coming from Cleveland) and it took another hour to get to the hotel. I don't blame you there.

Newegg, bc I like knowing if I have an issue down the road I know that I have records stored in one place for all of my gear going back to 2006.

    For cooling I use performancepcs.com
    They have the best selection.

NewEgg was nice when my M65 RGB White gaming mouse died after a week. They even sent me a pre-paid shipping label and had my replacement sent overnight UPS. They don't always go out of their way like this but I am glad that they did since the Corsair RMA site doesn't even have my mouse listed in their drop down menu. I made the first review of the product on NewEgg. Is this really that new that Corsair hasn't added it to their RMA request site?

Microcenter, Newegg, or Mwave. I'm in driving distance for all three.

I never heard of Mwave before this. Their website takes forever to load from here in the Eastern USA. How are the prices and service? I might have to expand my horizons.

I bought from MWave for my first build about 10 years ago, and didn't have any problems. I've also seen several customers here that have purchased from them. Their prices are about the same as Newegg or Amazon from what I remember.

You guys in California get to have all of the fun with the best suppliers. Even NewEgg is based in California but I normally get my orders shipped from New Jersey which cuts delivery time down by a lot.

Newegg, bc I like knowing if I have an issue down the road I know that I have records stored in one place for all of my gear going back to 2006.

    For cooling I use performancepcs.com
    They have the best selection.

just an FYI, Amazon does the exact same, and they don't charge restock fees
