Ok so I currently run SLI 480's, and have zero issues aside from I want to run GTAV on max detail at 1080p.  Aside from that I currently play a lot of DIRT rally and RTS games.  It seems the limiting factor on GTA is my 1.5GB VRAM, what would be a good upgrade for me?  Thanks all.

Pretty much nearly any card you get now within this generation would be better then SLI 480 and obviously more vram

980 or 980 ti would be my recommendation. If you can pony up the cash, the 980ti is a great option and should last quite a while at 1080p and 1440p.

Really?  SLI 480's are that potent that a 980 is a reasonable replacement?

No a 980 is better than you SLI 480 and will use much less energy to boot.

But you may have to buy a new heater for your house after removing the 480's..... it'll get cold quicker without them.

Haha I will miss the toasty feet.  No I was surprised to hear 980 so quick, I figured a single 960 or 970 would destroy SLI 480's, at least based off paper specs @ 1080p.

A GTX 960 or a GTX 970 would of course "destroy" your old GTX 480 SLi setup, but won't be enough to max out every setting in GTA V
(medium settings may be fine for a GTX 960/970 @ 1080P, but not with all settings maxed out).

That's where the GTX 980 or the GTX 980 ti comes into play.

I agree the 980's are pretty future proof. I have to +1 on Zuhl3156's post. 980 Ti Classifieds SMOKE on benchmarks. Check out the GeForce's relative performance graphs. 400's don't even make the list anymore haha

No way would a single GTX 960 "destroy" two GTX 480s. Don't be delusional. A GTX 960 might be able to break even with 2 GTX 480s in SLI.

Theoretical performance of SLi GTX 480 is about the same as a single GTX 960, yes.

But not every game scales perfectly with SLi, so in most cases a single 960 would be "better"
as it doesn't need to rely on good SLi support.
(this is especially true for GTA V, where the SLi scaling isn't perfect).

I put the quotations around the word "destroy" because, while the 960/970 is a little better,
it wouldn't be much of an upgrade (and it was also the OP's own words in the post above mine).

That's why i recommended a GTX 980 or 980ti instead as it would give a great improvement over his old cards.
And the 980ti especially, should be able to max out the settings of GTA V at 1080P
(something the 960/970 would struggle with).

nah a GTX 960 trades blows with the older GTX 670 which trades blows with a GTX590, which is faster than GTX 480SLI setup. So yes the 960 in newer games should be 10-15% faster.

You just made a huge point for the OP to consider going with a 980/980ti (970 minimum), and not a 960. If a 960 would only give  ~15% improvement, then it wouldn't be worth to go that route.

Wow after all these years the 480 are still alive? I would have thought they might have grilled themselves by the time. So nvidia was eventually right when they told people criticizing them for the amount of heat produced by the 480 "don't be afraid - the card is designed like that" lol

Oh they are still alive and kicking, powerful and hot as ever.  Overclocked on air.  I wish vram was modular, I feel like my cards would still meet all of my needs if only they had more memory onboard.  I guess I need to decide if the ability to turn up the candy on GTAV (the only game I play aside from DIRT that the cards even start to struggle with) is worth the investment.  Thanks for all of your help guys.

Ya. I have to agree. I had 470 SLI for many many years. Finally Upgraded last year. The 400 series are still good in "some" areas.
