For me, the 90s were amazing. Awesome technological advances in game engines (doom > quake > quake II > quake 3 etc ) meant you wanted to upgrade your PC every year with the newest GPU. I just am not seeing this, and have not seen this in the last decade or more of games being made. And no, bad optimization does not count... Crysis 1 might just be one of the last times graphics trully wow'd me. RTS, at least seem to have advances in graphics, but are not releasing much anymore. The first Dx12 game is actually a RTS, Ashes of the Singularity, which is cool. Supreme Commander back in 2007 melted pcs and looked great. DooM 3, a 2004 game, still looks amazing considering its age, whereas half life 2 looks incredibly bad today. The new DooM game looks like it will be what i have been wanting, fast paced demon smash with Quake 3 style Mp, but i don't think that one game alone will really draw me in like the 90s.

I might have to find a new hobby and wind down ye olde gaming rig....

+1.... The late 90's early 2000's were probably the most fun for me too. Back then their was a lot of custom made mods goin on for overclocking too that I used to do that I loved doin but for the last few years you can buy pretty much anything you need. I just put quake 3 and 4 back on my rig a month or two ago because the older games just seem so much better. I was thinkin of putting my old NWN games back on here the other day too, lol. :)  If you've been around that long you can just feel the whole pc industry has grinded to a halt in the last few years. Hardware and software wise both.

As far as game developers, Im still waiting for native Linux Game Engine, hopefully Unreal or Unity3D will get to that this year. Unity3D has native Blender3D importing. I can really see more independent game delvs gaining alot of traction here, because I see most of us old schoolers so sick of mindless gaming that just looks fluffy and more cash spent on advertising vs a great game.

I love my PC, but I also parted it together with bargain craigslist and black friday deals. The only thing i'm waiting for is the replacement to the GTX 980Ti... Then i'll move over to a 4K TV.

The only problem i'm having right now is getting into a game that totally immerses me like many in the past... I'll admit though, I have not done a whole lot of searching.

I love my PC too. She's just like a wife only better. She takes all of my time and money but doesn't complain when I leave the toilet seat up. What more could a man want?

As you get older, you sit down and see how much you spent over the years and the numbers blow your mind, its not worth trying to keep up with the race. Most of my PC was all built from discounted/on sale/used parts. Gave up on the rat race its not even worth it for the tiny jumps made as there is no real competition going on. The big two companies charging more for less. Its also sad my X58 system with a Core I7 970 still keeps up with today's hardware and is not left in the dust for hardware that is going on seven years old. Fixing/building peoples PC's I stopped doing that to a degree, I just ask what do you want to spend, then I find the best normally on Dell.com in their price range and say get this, get the extended service plan and the accidental damage plan good luck, have any issues call dell. As we age as RJ put it, desires change as well. For me I still like PC's but I am not going to run to any company with fistfuls of cash screaming shut up and take my money. I have my car, my dogs, guns, other interest not even related to my PC.

I've been feeling the burn out myself in terms of the pc gaming industry. Too many issues has been pushing me towards indie and my New 3DS XL and Wii U. It's sad really since I used to have so much respect and love for the bigger studios and their games. But the absurd prices for everything pc game related plus all the lies, backstabbing and bad hype has done me in. It's why I actually ended up subbing to Indie Box. Figured might as well get a good indie game every month with some sweet extras.

Every time I look there is another 'must have' item or fad for PC gaming if you want to belong to the 'In Crowd' and be one of the boys. Of course you suddenly have to game in 4k resolution at a slight cost of close to $1000 and then another $1000 to $2000 for graphics cards to drive these monitors. It's still the same game and when someone is killing you on the battlefield or in the Wasteland they don't care how good it looks to you. I can't tell if I am just burnt out or coming to my senses. A game is just a game and is there to keep me amused and occupied not put me in the Poor House or in debt for the rest of my life. End of my daily rant. Sorry for the interuption.

I always try to get a high end video board because I think they make the biggest difference plus I never want to sit and wonder if I should have spent more. I spent years nickel and diming my way to whatever the next best video board I could afford and then always wanted better so now I just save up and wait. My 2600k was still a great system but I couldn't pass up on the performance of a i7-4790k Devils Canyon CPU. I saved my money and pre-ordered. I am happy with the performance I am getting even without any extra overclock and from my point of view I am good for years to come. End of rant part 2. Sorry again for the interuption. LOL

Sadly this is true and I have to admit you are absolutely correct. As soon as Pascal hits the shelves all self control and will power will go right out the window. It will be new technology so I'd like to wait for a second generation or at least a refresh but I know resistance is futile and my wallet will soon be empty again.

That's the only thing that matters right there Z, that your satisfied with the value and performance you ended up with and you feel it does everything you need to do...... and then some. :)  You cant worry about what everyone else is doing. That's a great way to end up buying parts you regret later.

Just picked up an ES Xeon E5-1660v3, an EVGA X99 Classified and a DDR4 3200 8x2 kit to swap out my old mobo/cpu/memory. Out with X58, in with X99. I'm burnt out on the internet in general, not really burnt out on computer tinkering though.

I walk to the store for groceries does that count? I have been sitting at my PC a lot lately since it got cold outside. I am beginning to worry I will end up with a case of rhino-rump like a career secretary that sits at her desk for decades. ROFL.

I go outside, but that extremely bright orb in the sky burns...BURNS my precious!

No sunlight for me today. Snow is falling in the NE Philly area today and the skies are overcast. No worries here. I am getting so old that when I walk down the street in the sunlight I am always looking back to make sure none of my body parts are falling off like what happened to that guy in "American Werewolf in London".

I look in the mirror now and then and get upset when I start to see some gray around my temples. Then it hit me. I should be totally gray. I can't do anything right incuding going gracefully gray! OMG, I am so embarrassed.

same, I look like Reed Richards (although not as wealthy, nor as handsome!) ...grey right in the temples, but not much elsewhere...

My Dad was completely grey at this point..and he had a peninsula head, which I'm getting......strip of hair down the middle of the
top of the scalp, skin on both sides...and hair around the ears and back...
