Hi all. As the title says, I'm looking to upgrade my PC since it's beginning to feel a bit dated and would appreciate some (much!) guidance with it.

Current parts:
Case: CM Storm Stryker (just bought it to replace a Thermaltake Bach Vx)
PSU: Corsair CX750M
Motherboard: EVGA P55 FTW
Processor: Intel i7 860
RAM: 4x Corsair XMS3 4GB DDR3 1600MHz
GPU: EVGA GTX670
Storage: 5x 2 TB Seagate ST2000D(L003/M001) -- had an OCZ Vertex 3 SSD also, but it died; too many blackouts.

I'm a programmer, but I also like simulation/RTS games (Flight Simulator X, Star Citizen, StarCraft 2, etc.), so I'm looking to upgrade, either partially or completely, aiming for a mid-level build (as I believe mine was when I built it.) I spent around $1200 total on this one, but that was across 5 years. I'm looking to not spend as much this time around, but I'm lost on the current state of hardware.

Well, you're set with the case and PSU. The Trooper/Stryker will hold whatever you put in it.

    For the board, a Z170 FTW ($190), an i5-6600K ($256), or save $50 and go for a 6500, and 16GB DDR4 ($190) would be good. Pair it with a 970 FTW+ ($360).

If that's too much to drop at once, you can keep using the 670, as it should be ok with most of the games you mentioned, and upgrade that later.

Hi, thanks for your reply! Those parts seem reasonable; I can always upgrade the CPU later if needed. I'm looking through fans to use with the i5, since I don't think the one I have now will be compatible with the board.

Also, did you have any specific recommendations on what RAM to use?

    Thanks again.

1156/1155/1150/1151 have the same spacing, you just need to make sure your current cooler wont over pressure a skylakes tiny little silicone bed.

If you're near a Microcenter, you can pick up the SC 2666 DDR4 kit that we offer.

    Better late than never.

I finally got all the parts (no Microcenter for me, as I don't live in the US):

I'll probably build it this weekend, after backing everything up. Thanks again for the advice!

    Neat.

The best part about the PC is the opening of the boxes and that new computer smell.
