I've a 50" Vizio smart TV and it's cracked behind the screen. Is it worth getting it repair or is it possible to fix it myself?

Nope. Usually not worth it. Is it out of warranty?

It should be under warranty then unless it was caused by physical damage. If it is a defect, they will cover it for 1 year. Their warranty is not very good and that is one of many reasons why I don't buy Vizios.

Depends, can you solder, its normally a capacitor that has given out, see guys fix them all the time, if you can get the whole PCB for cheap seen people do that too. To do it yourself if you know how yes. To pay a company to do it normally no. If you can get the parts for cheap and have enough know how and its cheaper to do than buying a new one, I would say go for it.

Tried calling them yesterday. Tried blaming the damage on me.
Instead of them repairing or replacing it, they offered to sell me a 55" for $700.

Yeah, that sounds about right. If the outer screen and casing does not show damage, then you may have a chance. Sometimes you have to get pushy with them. What sucks is that the main panel behind the glass is usually the most expensive part so if they are not willing to work with you, you are better off buying a new one. Vizio has one of the worst warranties and their customer service is horrible. I would go LG or Samsung next time if you are going the LED route.

Don't forget to check with your CC company if you charged it.  I have some that automatically double the Mfg warranty and will help you with difficult Mfg or vendors.

Check the return / warranty coverage at the place you purchased the TV.

If the place you bought it from is not going to work with you, The first thing I try to do is be nice as possible and ask for a supervisor/manager if you need. If that doesn't work, tell them that you would really rather not pursue a legal course of action but you will be needed some further information from them... Usually works if they are at fault or it is a defect.

You had it 2 months, and you just now discovered the crack? Whenever I buy something like that, I inspect it all around for damage.

Probably the most expensive part. The panel and the mainboard. Yes. If they are not going to do anything under warranty, you might as well sell it for parts leave it at Vizios headquarters with some poop on it.

Did you cause the damage or did it just start that one day?  Also where did you purchase it from?

I've repaired several TV's , if the panel has issues like yours it is cheaper to buy a new TV .  Since it is only 2 months old get a supervisor involved . If you have a Facebook account tell them you are posting on it how they won't warranty a defective television . My sister got the run-around from them before . One post on FB & THEN they wanted to help her . I despise FB myself but it's handy for problems like this .

WHAT THE WIFE DON'T KNOW WON'T HURT YOU!

I'm gonna try that after I try wal-mart and see what they say
If it proves to be too much of a hassle i'll probably just CL/ebay it for parts

I have fixed a panel long ago and I can safely say that it was not worth the trouble at all. Walmart is usually pretty good with returns provided you have a receipt and/or it's in the system and there is no outside damage. If you have the packaging and receipt, I would take it down and say you want to return it. Don't even mention that you have made contact with anyone. Sometimes Walmart just opens it up to make sure everything is in the box and it's a done deal.

I agree with agent. This is definitely your best bet. They may, may remove the TV to make sure the model number matches. But I doubt it. It's Wal-Mart we are talking about.

If the crack occurred while at home it's possible someone in the household caused it by accident. If you have a small deductible for the household property insurance see if the repair or replacement is covered under your insurance policy.

Quick! Return that thing to Walmart! You are still within the 90 day return window for TV's. Just put it back in the box and return it. Don't take no for an answer.

I've fixed many TVs and a crack is not worth it. You can get a new TV for less than the cost of the part alone usually.

Sweet! Yeah, Walmart is pretty relaxed about returns. They can afford to be.
