I have been reading the forums here, looking at the classified threads. I can see that post bios ver 1.18 these boards will not post with 1 16gb chip I am looking to run 128gb ram, with the board. I will be using this pc as a gaming pc, plus doing 3d renderings and unity game stuff. What I want to know is if the boards that are currently shipped are they updated to the latest bios or will I have to get a smaller set of dimms to use to update the bios ?

thanks for any answers to this question ahead of time..

sojurne mine came with 1.09.  I put 4 sticks in 1,3,5,7... 4gb each and it posted fine on that bios.  I know that doesn't answer your question of a 16GB stick.  Like you I was really worried about memory (3000mhz+ support) and it not posting.  All the worrying was unfounded because it posted right up for me.  I would give it a shot without spending extra money.  Worse case you can run to a store that sells ddr4 memory and take it back once your done.

You will love the x99 classified.  I came from an Asus Rampage and abysmal support.  Rampage took much more tweaking while the EVGA just works :).  I really love the interface memory/pcie slots that are occupied etc.  Asus support was bad but I have called EVGA twice and the experience has been fantastic.

    Good luck!

Probably depends where you buy the MB from.  Inventory age can vary.

If you want to buy it from EVGA directly - I would call / e-mail  EVGA sales & ask if they can check / upgrade BIOS before EVGA ship it to you.

I guess I could leave that open as an option, all the parts besides the ram are going to be EVGA parts anyway perhaps i could get the direct and maybe get a deal,...

    Edit:
I noticed I can only get a limit of 2 video cards from the store, so that forces me to get the cards from newegg but the boards i may order from here if they can get me ones with updated bios.

Why would you want more than 1 or 2 GPUs, if you don't mind me asking?

Also, a later BIOS version adds support for high storage RAM.  If its one of the beginning versions, it won't work.

X99 MB; GTX 980Ti; and Intel 750 SSD PCIe 3.0 x4 Card. What PCIe slots are best for each card? Slot 1: SSD, Slot 4: GTX 980Ti ?
    Thanks

    other way around
    GPU PCIe slot 1 = X16

I run my Intel 750 SSD in the bottom slot

My CPU 5960X supports 40 PCIe lanes

    Valid point bcavnaugh,

PCIe lanes available are different based on CPU used

At this level I would not bother with the 28 PCIe lane CPU 5920k because it offers limited PCIe lanes

I know it is cheaper, but unless you NEED 6 cores and NOT 40 PCIe lane - it of poor value, IMHO

    @gtxjackbauer - I will be building 2 pc's each with 2 Titan x cards in sli.

Im also looking at the Z170 setup too and deciding between the two classified boards.
as it all needs to support the occulus rift as well..

I also forgot to ask, how many monitors, resolution and Hz for each PC?

If its mainly for gaming,  that is complete overkill and waste of funds, even if you were to do some editing and rendering.

You're better off going with a 6700K, Z170, GTX 980 Ti, 16GB-32GB of DD4 and a M.2 drive for both machines.  This should give you ample of power let alone, save you thousands on something that will get replaced with something better within 1-2 years.

If you got deep pockets, by all means have at it and show us some overkill pics when you're done.

i have 3 benq 120hz displays in span mode,  ill be using it both for gaming and virtual machines as well as unity 3d and occulus rift .
I may be going the Z170 classified and the 6700k with 64gb of gskill ripjaws. and the two titansX's so i can run sli spanned. I plan to keep the system around 6 years , is usually when i upgrade to the latest depending on funds :D.

Ill def post some pics when the project gets started in feb- march ..just doing all my research and stuff now .

Yup, do your research before pulling the trigger.

From my experience, I have 16GB of a x99 system with 3 monitors in surround.  I might peak 8-10GB of ram used once in a BLUE MOON but overall, I'm steady at around 6-7GBs.

I still think the Titans are overkill for gaming but do come with 12GB as opposed to 6GB (Ti).  I guess you're just looking to future proof but I personally can't justify the price.  A Ti is a Titan with out its dual precision used in CAD, fluid simulations and less Vram.

Overall, should be a exciting build.

The old Titans had Double Precision, but nVidia removed it on the Titan X.
This means the Titan X is pretty much just a regular gaming card with lots of ram.

Nothing wrong with buying titan x's if you can afford them. At least you know you got a flawless chip without any unstable SMMs.

Lets relax guys. I'm not telling him what to buy, only to give him the right advise to built a rig he'll use to its fullest extent.  There's MANY people that build machines that buy things they'll never use. Like 3 GPUs on a single 1080p screen or a 1200w PSU on a 150TDP GPU.  Not saying the OP fits in that category but its always nice to help others save some funds if they could and didn't know and if funds aren't an issue, by all means have at it.

    Back to the original question.

    1. 128 GB of RAM. Could be iffy proposition. If you want to leave on stock (CPU) then it should work, but more you want to push, more issues you will encounter. And it is advisable to run 4 sticks not 8. With eight sticks memory controller is under serious load to deliver when CPU is overclocked (same issue as X58 or X79). Take into consideration that a lot of boards (all brands) have issues with 16GB  per stick. With 64 GB you should do just fine unless doing some super extreme high-res renderings - but for that are Teslas not Titans.
    2. Z170 vs X99. There is no = between both. First is at best potent gaming platform. 2nd offers just insane computation power. If you want to do 3D rendering don't even think about Z170.
    3. For that kind of workload (rendering) you would benefit greatly from NVMe drive. It should be on your 'to get' list without question.
    4. BIOS flashed to the board when new in the box is pure lottery. I've got 1.13 in June last year, but folks who bought new much later than me got even older like 1.09 or something. Just lottery.

Should be a really nice rig.  Don't forget you have the M.2 PCIe SSD unless the 1TB will be a PCIe SSD.

    Sounds like a nice build.

Look forward to more updates as it comes together.

    Thanks.

will be using photoshop and Vmware products that will utilize the ram , some virtual labs and such wanted to get more ram but did not want to run a xeon processor as its not to good for the gaming that i will be doing aswell so i read. but all in all it will be a pretty sweet rig once it's up and running . :D looking forward to putting it together .

The 1 TB is a sata ssd, ill have to get an m.2 later as funds become available, and will make the change to that  i know it is abit of a performance hit but its all i could do with the budget that I had . :D.
