I been wanting to build a 775 system simply for fun and I can't make up my mind on what gpu's to use.

I could do the cool thing and use 2 295's or do the better thing and use 2 285's.
What would you use with a q9650?

a QX9650 couldn't max out a single GTX295 back in the day, honestly for a 775 system id stick to at most an SLI GTX 250 1gb or an 8800 Ultra SLI

I'm going to OC the cpu to 4ghz at the very least. I was also able to push 2 5850 in CF with a 4.4ghz OC on a q9650.
This will be more of a fun play around system and not a practical build. Just something for fun...
So if I can only use 75% of my GPU power so what? Not like 295's or 285's cost much.

EDIT:
I'm reading a review over at xbitlabs about the qx9650 and 920.
www.xbitlabs.com/articles/graphics/display/xfx-gf-gtx285-gtx295_12.html
seems like a OC'd qx9650 beats a 920 at stock speeds for the most part.

I vote for dual 295s just because.  I've been wanting to do something similar with socket 478 and a 3.4 Prescott P4.

I would not say it's waking over it all the time. Maybe in most tests, but in some they come pretty close. Still a bottleneck non the less.

8800 Ultra Triple SLI is FTW level, I keep telling myself one day I will buy 3 of them and do just that.

Thanks for the info guys.
As much as I'd like a 295 sli setup, not manny good ones out there and they're abit over priced if you ask me.
I bought a set of 9800 gx2. Next best thing...

My monitors max resolution is 1280x1024 so ill do fine.
I'll get a set of 295s down the road when I find some good ones if the gx2 don't cut it.

I've always wanted the 9800GX2 back in the day. Excellent choice!

Awesome! I did a similar thing a few years ago as I had my old 790i FTW just sitting in the closet. I went overboard with about 6 different green fans - it was pretty fun. Three 9800 GTX+ cards in SLI, though it was actually pretty stable.
