Windows 10 has been changed to a ‘recommended’ upgrade - from an optional one. If your Windows 7 or 8 machine is set to automatically install recommended items (the default setting), it will download several gigabytes of data.   Link

Dont get me wrong I love windows 10 pro x64, but I have used software to stop all of its monitoring crap. What is Microsoft thinking? Honestly? They are going to push more people to mac or linux, if they would gut out all the monitoring spyware in their os. People would jump on board no problem without having to force feed it down their throats.

Guess I will be making a few pit-stops on my way home today. I have a few people on 7 and I can't remember if I turned off their auto updates.

It's not downloading here. I removed all of the upgrade and telemetry updates. LOL Microsoft!

    What is Microsoft thinking?

If anything takes longer than an hour or two to download AND install people get angry. This will drive away customers more than having it pre-download on its own. If they pre-download, that will help the install time. The average download speed is about 5Mb/s. If they download it slowly throughout the week, then it won't sit there and take 2 hours to just download the installation.
I agree, they are being very pushy. The people that have a problem with this do not want Windows 10, have a data cap or have limited storage.
They should have said "Are you planning on getting Windows 10? Click here to get the download started. We will slowly download this so it does not affect your productivity. We will let you know when the download is complete. (Download will take up to 4GB. ISP data rates may apply)."

That would be too considerate. We're talking about Microsoft here, remember?

I am pretty sure I installed GWX control panel on most of my builds and turned updates off but I better check. I have one poor guy that has a 10 gig cap every month. If that thing started eating up his data, he is gonna be pissed!

I did find this but I am trying to hold off on anything drastic that would prevent Windows 10 from being Windows 10. http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/win_updates_disabler.html
It disables all updates which would prevent the mandarory restart in the middle of the night if I happen to be Folding. I'd really like to let Windows 10 'do its thing' and see how it acts without any outside interference. So far I only have it on my spare PC hooked up to my TV and I haven't had a great deal of problems yet but I don't use it much either. No sense in going looking for trouble and from what I can see, Windows 10 can cause a lot of grief to anyone who invades its 'comfort zone'.

One of my Family Members computer download the upgrade and ran out of Disk Space on the C: Driver at 89% of the Windows 10 Upgrade and now Windows 7 Home will no longer startup and Windows 10 will not complete the upgrade due to no Disk Space.
We are going to get this Family Member an iPad so they can at lest do email and browse the web and so on.

The download goes to a hidden directory --- so you have to hunt it up to delete it

Yes I see KB2952664 is back again, despite my selecting it to be hidden back when it was re-introduced in January. KB2952664 is the one that downloads the hidden W10 pre-install file bs.

    AVOID THESE MS UPDATES:

KB3035583 : the nagware one in the task bar.

KB2952664 : re-introduced in Windows Update in January 2016, downloads the hidden W10 pre-install file. This particular update was last seen around June 2015.

KB3021917 : installs telemetry, last seen back in December 2014 and has not made an appearance since (that I'm aware of), but you can't trust Microsoft not to bring it back.

..and oops looks like they've added a new one! :

KB3123862 : Looks to be a new version of KB3035583 nagware.. "The update adds capabilities to some computers that lets users easily learn about Windows 10 or start an upgrade to Windows 10."  Ok that's one more to avoid.

More info on the new 'patch' here..

I despise Microsoft more every day.

With all the talk about turning off WU to avoid updating your computer, do the settings stay if you power down the system? For some reason I turned off the WU and when I powered the system back on I went to the WU section to see I had a few new updates and the settings were the default settings.
