I assume the challenge dates are in UTC?  Is there an easy way to follow the challenge points & standings besides waiting for WCG to update their page?

On their page, it says:
"Statistics last updated 30.11.15 23:59:59 (UTC) 13 hours ago"
I guess no statistics has been updated the whole day.
I wait to release anything until I see some numbers.

I believe UTC is correct. And I believe we will see only the 2x daily WCG normal updates. They need da stat pimp on the case. I guess they zeroed out at 11:59 UTC last night.
After the frenzy of the TZC, we need to re-learn how chill and and pace ourselves for a marathon like this. I certainly can't go all in for 24 days.

Punchy, this is a shocker if I'm reading it right. The storm pc is Linux and sid3 is Windows.
Less time to crunch and 4-5-6 times the credit?? Also the latest batch is finishing in under an hour but there could be a number of reasons for that including not folding on the gpu.

Wow, that's a significant difference between Linux and Windows.  I'd look into dual-booting, but would bring my PC down for the time needed to get Linux + BOINC installed and running.  Is this difference seen with the other apps, or just OET?

Thanks for the reply on stats.  SETI Germany had hourly stats for each team during the 11th Birthday Challenge.  Just curious on where they were pulling that from.

I'm just running OET on my slower cpus but I am going to take the time to install on my fastest cpu when time permits. The downside is that gpu crunching is difficult in linux so far. In fact there is no option for it in the current BM. (7.2.42)  One other fact to mention is the faster hdd Linux is installed on, a 10K spinner vs old laptop drive for W7. Not exactly apples to apples but I don't think that's reason for the huge difference, just part of it.

Re: 2015 WCG Christmas Race 2015/12/01 08:15:40 (permalink)
Interesting, I'll have to do a quick comparison of the BOINC benchmark numbers on my one dual-boot system, since the benchmark numbers factor in to the claimed credit number (IIRC).

If I had time, I could do some more frequent stats updates, since I wrote the code to pull BOINC stats for our last combined folding/crunching challenge, and that could be modified for this purpose.  Unfortunately, I may not have time until Christmas, which is a little late...

As far as stats go, here's a line from cuarc's post at [H] last year.

"Keep in mind that personal points are updated twice a day but team points and challenge points are only updated once a day."

Probably no different this year.

I always seem to forget WU Prop stats.  This results page for OET on Intel i7 chips supports what yodap is seeing with run times on Linux and Windows.

ive been finding windows produces all around better results in boinc for about a year now.. especially in nvidia gpu, but even cpu i7 or new i5 processes... ati/amd seems to be a different story all together though.. (I personally haven't had an amd card for a year now, this is just what i've heard..

**also, besides the increasingly difficulty and nature of running nvidia cards in linux, the bottom line is.. they just seem to work better in windows. (8 hours long run gpugrid no settings required on 970's, linux was a whopping 12 hours.. just saying)

Just woke up to the first set of stats being posted and wow, 2nd place with 1st completely reachable.
Thanks to all for your input on the OS results and glad to have you up and running, cw.
I installed Mint 17.2 on my fastest machine, (2600k@4.4Ghz) late last night and started crunching right away. I'll look at things in a while after coffee.

I'll throw a few cores at it, it's a good cause.

... "a few cores" ... and he scores 119,504 BOINC points for WCG already today and the final update isn't even done.

Day 2!

We are looking good!
We have a nice lead over number 2 - let's see if we can extend it!

BTW - Sporting my EVGA shirt I won from the TZC at work today (casual Friday). Left the lanyard at home. On the front it says;
Overclock until it Megahertz -  Part of me thinks this is really cool and the other part feels like Nerdy Mcnerder.

Why don't you send the hat to someone up north who could really use it.

Guess you have a point there. It is a brisk 62F at 12:50 here. Gets chilly in my tiny office. i have to wear a fleece pullover in the summer.
But I am straying off topic. You called me out and i responded!! High five from Florida to NY.
We are kickin' so far in this competition!!

Also you score 22 world wide.
Hat's off
Not sure if I can recall this many EVGA'ers in one Challenge.
Great fun

This contest really has me considering retiring my H8QME-2.
I connect a GPU to it for folding since bigadv is done and the per-core performance just doesn't seem to cut it for BOINC anymore.
Running WCG 24/7 for this challenge and it has done exactly half the output of my 3930k, which I even shut down occasionally for gaming (gasp!).

Thinking of salvaging the accessories and getting a Z170 CPU/mobo/ram combo.  Even 8 threads would be a boost in output I think.  Then I could hook up moar GPU's!  hmmm....

By output I am referring to Points Generated vs run time:

OpolisPrime has the 3930k.

Some reasoning behind switching hardware is that I would have Windows installed and could add more GPU's.
It could be used for other things instead of just a linux system on a rack.
More of a second PC than just a DC-only rig.

Oh yeah and I could generate more points!

I'm gonna finish up my work units in the folding side and run wcg till the prime grid challenge starts. Then I'll split with prime grid. That's my plan for now.
