I have a year old inexpensive Dell Monochrome Laser Printer (B1160w) and I'm now on my second ink cartridge. I'm not sure how many pages I printed with the original ink cartridge, but I know it was less than 250 pages. I don't do a lot of printing. The literature says I should get 1,500 pages, but I doubt that. With my second ink cartridge I've probably printed less than 100 copies, but I'm told I only have about 60% left in ink.

With my past HP inkjet printer I was going through ink fast even though I didn't do a lot of color printing. I know with an inkjet printer the printer is always working to keep things fresh, so I could understand why ink would just disappear. I thought laser printers were suppose to be different.

Recently, I went to print something from WORD and the printer didn't work. I noticed that the printer was very warm and it was off. I thought when a laser printer is off, it's off. Not so it seems with mine. I'm not sure it's normal for a laser printer to stay warm when it's suppose to be off.

At the same time when I couldn't print from WORD, I noticed my printer had problems turning on and off. I've found if I unplug the printer, and then plug it back in, I can then turn it on. Unplugging the printer also allows it to completely turn off.

I tried removing the Dell software from Programs, but not all of it could be removed, and Dell says all software needs to be removed before reinstalling drivers, etc.. Another thing I noticed is that my printer doesn't show up in Device Manager which seems kind of strange to me.

I have been able to work around getting the printer to print, but the quality is really bad: roller marks; shading; uneven printing; etc. etc.. When this ink cartridge runs out I want to pick up a new monochrome laser printer and I would like to hear your opinions on this matter.

Thank You,

I had a few Dell lazer printers before the one I have now... They were an absolute pain in the butt. Samsung makes a solid lazer printer line-up. I'd just buy a new one if your toner replacements are not working out. I'd just get a new printer.

I just got one of those cheapy pantech laser printers on a newegg shell shocker for 25 bucks and it works great. I am looking for a good color laser printer in the 100 range but all the reviews on the Samsung's show that the toner is crazy expensive.

Thanks RainStryke (I've always liked your Avatar) for the link to that Samsung. Nice price, but it's more machine than I want. Plus I'm getting the feeling that Samsung toner is a little expensive. I'm looking for is a small, simple, one side only unit that has reasonably priced toner replacement cartridges.

I'm thinking next Black Friday might be a good time to pick up something. Does anyone have any experience with inexpensive Brother printers. The Canon printers look nice, but the toner is crazy expensive.

I'm also still wondering if a laser printer should be warm when switched off.

Alrighty, I just picked up the Samsung M2020w at Amazon for $58.75 (no tax _ free shipping). The price for the official toner replacement cartridge is around $46.00, which is about $9.00 less than a replacement cartridge for my Dell.

I still can use my Dell and I have more than 50% ink left, but it's printing with one side of the page fading, but it can still be read. I've taken my toner cartridge out a couple of times and shaken it around to no avail. Could the roller be gummed up and can that be cleaned? Any other tips to get the page printed evenly?

    Thanks,

Darn, the Samsung I purchased is now on sale for $47.89. Should have waited for Cyber Monday.
That's about what it costs for a replacement toner cartridge.

Hope you have better luck with your Samsung laser than I did with the SCX-3405W I bought.

Second week I had it it started with a fuser error (UI-2320) - but would reset.

3 months & Less than 150 pages and the fuser failure error would not reset. - stopped printing

Called Samsung - "NOT covered by warranty as it is a wear item" - regardless of use - printer has page counter - Samsung did not care.  So much for a 1 year warranty on the printer.

Fuser assembly is not user serviceable - got to disassemble the whole printer - @ < $100 printer not worth the effort.

Bought a Brother (DCP-L2540DW) laser and have been happy for the last 1 yr +.  The fuser and toner are separate  and easy end user serviceable besides being inexpensive.

I have had good luck with Samsung: TVs, monitors, cell, SSD - but will never buy their laser printer again.

The laser printer warranty from Samsung is not worth the paper it is printed on - based on my experience.

Lesson learned if Samsung printer has ANY issue - better return it ASAP - while you can!
