I want to replace my existing 6GB of memory with 16GB, but I am having a hard time finding something on the approved list of DDR3 1600. I want to spend around $100.00 us or so and 1600 G.SKILL 16GB seems to fit the bill, but i cant find the TDD version of this stuff anywhere. Below is the list, and I am open to suggestions. I am trying to resurrect life into this aging beast and want to see if I can get it to run Fallout 4 on max settings. Sadly I dont even have the game yet...as my current setup cant support it. I am hoping 16GB of shiny new RAM and maybe a new GTX 970 card will let me pump another year so out of this rig. While I'm at it...will a GTX 980Ti be bottled necked a lot on my X58FTW? I would plan on moving the 980 to the new rig after a year or so and consider it my first "part" in my new rig. I have a Corsair 850 PS /w a 950 CPU running at close to 4GHz. To take full advantage of the x58 chipset, you would be better off with triple channel memory, meaning 3 module kits. The board supports up to 24GB, divided by 6 slots, so your biggest modules supported would be 4GB sticks. Honestly for gaming you won't lose a whole lot if you run 4 sticks in dual channel, so a 4x4GB kit of pretty much any memory kit of this size will work, even if it's not on the compatibility list. For an older motherboard like this, most of these exact kits on the compatibility list are probably long ago end-of-life, and very hard to find. Also bear in mind, the IMC on the i7 950 is 1066Mhz. 1600Mhz usually isn't a big problem, but it may take some tweaking to get it to run right, and in some cases it may be too fast for the IMC. If you can't boot at 1600Mhz, try dropping the memory speed to 1333Mhz or 1066Mhz and try again to confirm the memory is working, then you can try adjusting your overclock settings to dial in the memory at 1600Mhz.

I can't say I've ever seen a compatibility issue with G.Skill memory, I don't see any reason why that kit would cause you any problems. Personally, I'm a huge fan of the value you get with a 970, I run two of them myself. That said, if you can afford the 980, it's definitely a faster card, but at around $200 for about a 15% performance increase, it's up to you to decide if the price is worth it.

Since it's getting harder and harder to find a 3-channel kit for the X58 platform nowadays (motherboards and RAM kits today are either dual or quad-channel) i would reccomend picking up 3 identical 8GB or 4GB dual-channel kits from the same store (for a total of either 24GB or 12GB). Just make sure they are the same make and model and that they are the same revision to ensure stability (i know at-least Corsair put the revision number on their modules). Having the same version of RAM is very important for the stability as only having the same make and model is not enough and could cause strange reboots and other instabilities.

I have a X-58 Evga motherboard and a I-7 920 which I used to run @ 4.2 with 12GB corsair triple channel ram. Have had multiple windows open @ the same time and running a corsair SSD. I personally didn't see a diff. between 6GB-12Gb never did any tests but just my thoughts. Ran the 6GB for a year then decided to increase the ram to 12 Gb. I usually played MWF3 didn't see any difference there. The most performance I noticed was going to a SSD. I was running a Seagate 7,200 rpm HD before the switch to the SSD.

i would not populate all 6 slots, the board does not like it. 12gb is plenty fine for the x58, i will have multiple apps open and have yet to see 60% used.

Well from my personal experience. Currently my X58 running 24 GB, 6 sticks of Ballistix BLS3CP4G3D1609DS1S00CEU. These are 1.5V, bought them on Amazon like 18 months ago. Look for 1.5V modules. If you decide to OC it gives you precious headroom and X58 northbridge will hoist white flag at over 1.65V IIRC. Worked perfectly well at 1600/1.5 all 6 for a good while. Right now running downclocked to 1066 to limit system power drain as it is no longer my primary machine, just a backup and I do only some work stuff (terminals, databases, catalogs) if need arises. Otherwise it's running BOINC (winter) or shutdown (summer). As for 24GB, for OC it generally sucks ballz. Never was big on OC, but six sticks is problems and X58 DIMM slots are world famous for instability when more than 3 sticks are used. As for 6 vs 12 v 24GB. Well for gaming you can easily get away with 6. With some work 12 is preferable. 24 is just bliss, swap disabled, couple VMs or RAMDisk. Anyway X58 still rocks, but for computation, X99 really shows it's fangs and leaves venerable hero (920) in the dust - no matter how much OC applied.
