Hi, I have a SR-2 that used to be overclocked when I was using 12Gb Ram, i think it was running at 3.4GHz. A few years ago I upgraded the Ram to 48Gb

The spec is as below.

SR-2 with 2x Xeons X5650's
(G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM Desktop Memory F3-17000CL11Q-16GBXL)

Previously I used a template that I found on here. (Shimanos?) I must admit I have no clue about overclocking and just copied the numbers across. Unfortunately, it no longer works and won't boot.

Can someone point me in the right direction, maybe by pointing me towards a template and telling me what might need changed. I'm not worried about absolute maximum performance, just a bit more speed out of these processors. Stability is important but at the moment it's all running stock and I hope to get a bit more. Appreciate any help. M.

ok, thanks. I only have x5650s and killing them is not an option for me. Would would it take for me to hit around 3.6Ghz? 4 would be great but I need to ensure it stays stable. This machine is used in my business for video editing and I can't afford for it to crash while it's doing render queues etc. Appreciate your reply btw!

ar you on water or on air?

    for 3.5g try 175 * 20 whit 1.25vcore and vtt between 1.25v and 1.3v
i think for 4g you gone need go above 1.375 vcore and vtt 1.35

killing the x5690 was not planned, was testing other setings on a asus rampage II

I have two Corsair Hydro Series H80 on the processors. Everything else is air cooled. If I use those values to try and get 3.5Ghz do I just leave all the other things on auto?

I really am new to overclocking but can someone recommend a guide or something to read so I can at least start to get an idea of what all the values actually do?

Skulstation2 I'll try your numbers over the weekend and see how I get on.

    Thanks, M.

i did use this http://forums.evga.com/SR2-OC-BIOS-Template-m268280.aspx as base guide and playd whit it and came to my settings.
all pics ar gone. don't know if i have sevad them back in the days i startet to play whit the sr-2
you can try to set vtt , vcore and leave rest auto.
an other link thad gone help you

166 bclk with everything else on auto (1600 mch strap) should just work. Much higher with dual 6-core CPUs and 12 DIMMs, and if you think it's stable it only means you haven't stability tested hard enough.

Westmere 6-core Xeons s are good for about 4.1-4.2GHz with high end non-cryogenic cooling. Any higher will not be 24/7 stable. If you're going faster and you think it's stable it only means you haven't stability tested hard enough.

I run my X5690s at 4.0GHz, the machine is on 24/7 being a multi-seat virtualized workstation.

Once it's working with bclk=166 and everything else on auto (with X5650s, with faster CPUs you will need to reduce the multiplier to ensure they do not exceed 4GHz, possibly less depending on how good your heatsinks are) you should be able reduce various voltages, but this you will have to test yourself to find the stability limits. Note that turbo-boost will push the X5650s beyond their reported clock speed, so 166bclk is going to be sufficient to get you to your intended effective clock speed target.
