Does anyone know if an Intel 750 pci-e x4 SSD will work on the evga X79 motherboards?

Edit:
I found some posts claiming it will work on some ASUS X79 mobo's.
A BIOS update with UEFI version 2.3.1 or higher would fix this for any X79 mobo.
So it comes down to EVGA ... will we get an updated UEFI bios soon?

Yes, all EVGA X79 MB's support full UEFI. You shouldn't have an issue with PCI-E SSD's

As long as the drive itself is fully UEFI compliant. I have some older Crucial M4 drives that would not trigger the Raid 0 screen with either my X79 FTW nor My Dark. AHCI mode worked, but not Raid 0.

In theory it should work fine, granted I am not sure why it is not.  I will look into this, I know we are not planning on any more X79 BIOS updates, as the  chipset was discontinued from Intel, but I will see what I can do with this.

the  chipset was discontinued from Intel

That's sad, but maybe X79 cpu prices will finally come down.

There shouldn't be any problems as long as you are in UEFI mode.  Confirmed from engineering.  Now if you are having issues, can you be really specific about the issue, also screen shots would be helpful as well.
What slot(s) have you tried?  Also, when it is plugged in, is the drive detected in BIOS?  It should show in the top where other PCIE devices are shown, as well as how many lanes are being used for the SSD.

Well guys i went ahead and installed the Intel 750 on my Dark mobo, and it went really easy, did fresh install of win7.
i'm to dumb to load my screen shot of my ATTO benchmark but here is my #'s,, read was- 2,187,251mb's, write was- 982,080mb's...
Boot is actually alittle slower than my Intel 730..
 BOOT OPTION- UEFI
 LAUNCH STORAGE OPROM- UEFI
 That was it....

Hello Guys

i was just looking at the M.2 ssds and found this thread. What i am going to ask is does gen3 make any speed difference over gen2 at pcie x4 ssd?

for example, for the above intel 750 ssd what if my friend had a board with pci exp 3.0 ? what will be the speeds? is x79 dark mobo bottleneck for NVME pcie x4 ssd?

thanks in advance.

Gen 2 vs Gen 3 does have a sizable performance difference for x4 NVME drives.  The X79 chipset wasn't designed for these drives as they did not exist yet, however, if you run a PCIE based drive like the Intel and you have a Ivy-B proc you should see some really solid performance.

So the Intel 750 will run in Gen 2 or Gen 3? In Gen 2 it would be wayyyy slower than Gen 3...I wanna get a Intel 750, but want to first confirm it works in Gen 3.

i guess the pci exp 3.0 will not differ so much over pci 2.0  for the intel 750

because the write speeds and the read speeds for the intel 750 above are already in their maximum.

so, i think   for this ssd there wont be any difference between gen 2.0 and gen 3.0

Hey Zerocool,
It does make a differance, u have to set ur pci slot to gen3 or it will run alot slower in gen2, if u look at my earlier post it runs to their specs they claim, the only prob im having is it does not reconize my sound card sbz, does not show in  pci slots in bios, video card gen 3 x18, intel 750 gen3 x4, and intel 19402 nic card gen2 x1, all show up but not sound card.. my question is should i buy a newer card, to be more compatable with NVME, just kinda shooting in the dark...

Dear Crosshairdon

what is the realation between sound card and intel 750? does your sound card work while the intel 750 is not installed?

what happens when you set the slot you installed intel 750 to gen 2.0 and set the slot you installed your sound card to gen 2.0 at the same time?

and according to your first sentence how can intel 750 in gen 3.0 run faster than gen 2.0 if it is already in its max read and write speeds?

Hey Spirit,
i think its more the nvme, it doesn't show up in bios in that mode i can go bac to my backup 730 intel in legacy mode and everything is normal in bios, sound card shows, just not in nvme, and in gen2 it shows slower on the ATTO test about half, if i put the sound card in anything except the 1x slot, i get alot of back ground noise, which i understand to be normal. like i said earlier, it doesn't even show up in device manager until i update with windows, if i download the driver and try to run it, it does not find any hardware at all, only the win. update finds it.. i didn't even have usb3 sockets working until i enabled marvel and lan1 and lan2, which was recently after i read in forum to try it...
my question is, would nvme recognize a newer sound card, i read where some hardware is not compatible with it, is it a old or new hardware thing...

Dear crosshairdon

what cpu are you using on your x79 dark mobo? it is not related about your sound card issue by the way.i am trying to figure out what speeds you get with which cpu.i am deciding to buy intel 750 but i have 3930k which doesnt support pci gen 3.0 officially.so i just want to know what speeds i will get.

for the sound card issue the newer one might solve the issue but i really dont think so.there should be a driver or something because the windows update can find it as you said.So there should be a newer driver that gets it recognized by the computer.

Hey Spirit,
i using the 4960, well for the sound card issue, i think all the problems stem around the mobo set on nvme, it just has little twerks about it on x79 boards, this weekend i'm goint to run it on my intel 730 ssd, just to see how everything reacts, whatever i find i will let you know..
as for the driver for sbx card i have the latest from creative support...
Intel did suggest to run the 750 on the x99 mobo, after some reading some are having goofy things happen on them too..
hope this helps, goodluck with yours...

I personally would love to try one on my own rig, but funds are a tad tight right now, but also, I would need a PCIE ribbon to extend one of the covered slots... as I am currently completely out of available PCIE slots.

Please let us know your results.

Re: X79 series (UEFI) & Intel 750 pci-e x4 SSD compatibility? 2015/12/06 06:11:34 (permalink)
I got a samsung 951 ahci (double verified it!), and an adapter board from addonics.
Did the bios settings as posted earlier by crosshairdon.
But the drive is not recognized as bootable drive in any pci-e slot.
Also, I updated the bios to the latest version before I started rebuilding.

Now I have the samsung in the 8x slot right beneath the primary x16 graphics slot.
Win 8.1 sees it perfectly as ahci drive.
Win 10 setup sees it as a viable installation media.
Except booting from it seems impossible.

Any suggestions?

Installed my 750 400GB without a hitch. Plugged in the drive in the 2nd to last PCI-e slot, shows up in BIOS at 3.0/x4. Booted from UEFI Windows 10 USB installer without a hitch. Zero issues. 2100 read, 900 write per CrystalDiskMark.

Well .. got me an Intel 750 after de 951 did not came up as bootable device.
No luck.
The 750 does not boot, nor does it show as bootable option.

Questions:
Where does the bios show pci-e devices? ... running v2.13 does not seem to have that option.
Wich settings should work?

I did set bootoption and storage option rom to UEFI.

PCI-e devices are shown at the top of the BIOS screen. You need to make sure you have Gen 3 enabled for all the PCI-e slots, and make sure that CSM is set to disabled.
