put in the rma to the support team, but what i want to know is how does the rma work, do they send out a gpu and then you send back the one thats faulty or what, because ive already sold my 780's and cant go without my pc.

Edit, update, i finally got a prec x that works, god knows whats up with the new one, currently running 4.2 fine. But did a test as others have suggested and downclocked the card by 52 mhz and bang, it works fine, so its defo the card. And for a card that is watercooled as standard and has been shown to have the ability to majorly overclock it i find it rather unbelievable that these cards got past quality control when they have to be under clocked to actually work.

Just curious how your RMA went? I finally put an RMA in for my card and should receive it early next week.

Received the second RMA replacement GPU and the game's been playing flawlessly since.

Updating since I received my card from my RMA: new card came in and now I can run my system back to it's original SLI configuration which was being hindered by a card that gave me constant grey screens.

Results: I installed the new card in the top PCI-E slot and moved the other card down a slot. The new card is now running as the main card and I'm getting absolutely perfect results. As mentioned before, the card that was in there got me a red screen at one point which I never saw before and I'd get a weird issue with Google Chrome where when I quit out of a game and switched over to Chrome it would cause Chrome to refresh the monitor. NONE of those issues are occurring with the new card. Also I've been playing the whole day and night on the new Nvidia drivers.

Got my card via RMA, and have had no problems since (Except with Endless Legend, but it doesn't like 980's at all for some reason).

Edit: Now I'm getting grey screens...I just *had* to post that everything was okay.  Thinking I should have bought a different card.

So what can I conclude from this: The Nvidia drivers are not the direct cause of the grey screens. They might definitely be aggravating the situation but they aren't the cause. Both my cards are also running the same BIOS so that most likely isn't the issue as well. I believe certain cards have the unlucky fortune of being problematic. There may be nothing else that can be done aside from returning your card and hoping you get a good working one in return. I'd like for EVGA to address this issue because when I called them for the RMA it seemed like they had never heard of the issue before. Now here's a thread with many people experiencing the issue so I hope it doesn't go unnoticed or no response is given like how Nvidia handled their GTX 970 issue.

Not sure if you guys are still subscribed to this thread but I'd love to hear your stories how everything is going now. It sounds like getting a working RMA card is luck. Did anyone try to change voltages on the cards? I wonder if that is the reason this very common TDR or black screen issue is showing itself? It almost seems like the cards are not getting enough juice on voltages as you play.

Got my RMA'd 980 SC but I'm still having issues.  Grey screens with low-GPU usage games (voltage issue?).  Haven't touched voltage yet.    Possible fix for low-voltage might be setting Nvidia Control Panel's Power Management to 'Prefer Maximum Performance.' Played The Witcher 3, had driver crashes; a fix for that is going into Nvidia Control Panel -> Configure Surround, PhysX, and setting the processor to CPU.  I've heard that works with other games as well, like Far Cry 4.  Talked to support again, got standard reply.  Holding off on doing another RMA.

I'm using Win 7.  I wonder if drivers are different and less problematic on Win 10.

That's a shame.  Thanks for the info, though.

I had to get a second RMA from them because the first one was actually worse than the card before with crashes. I've had it for about 2 weeks now with no problems. Ran heavy benchmarks like UEngine Valley for an entire day without a single crash, some other benchmarks, etc. Seems to be stable. I haven't had time to run any games on it though and Witcher 3 is a great benchmark to let me know if anything is wrong with a GPU. Not sure how good of a benchmark Valley is but I had it on the highest possible details with the ultra HD preset and it was max detail. Was scoring over 3k on it each time which was higher than my previous 2 980s.

Is there any other benchmarks you guys would recommend me running since I'm not playing any games right now? I stopped playing Witcher 3 on PC because I kept going through the RMA process and decided to just play it on PS4.

Re: GTx 980 sc grey screen 2015/07/13 19:30:53 (permalink)
Well, I tried playing SWTOR tonight just to test it out since that seemed to be the only game that could reveal my first 980's problem except TW3 and you guess it...crash. My screen froze and took awhile to ctrl+alt+delete close it. So I really don't know what to do as with the previous 2 I tested all the components in my PC and used my older GPU which it ran stable with. Only thing I haven't tested is a different PSU in my system but I have a GTX 570 and that card which runs stable in this system probably takes up even more power than a 980. I didn't get any crashes with the heavy benchmarks I ran on this RMA card for a few days. I ran one benchmark for 24 hours. Weird. Downclock issue maybe since SWTOR is weak? In any event, I saw the 980 FTW was getting a fix from EVGA is it rolling over to this GPU series too? ACX 2.0 980 SC.

I'm really tired of this RMA process to the point where I feel like throwing this computer out the window because I haven't been able to enjoy any games on it the past 2 months. My first 980 worked great for the first few months I had it. I remember putting about 100 hours into DAI without a single problem and then when I played SWTOR it was the first time I experienced a problem until I underclocked it. Witcher 3 also exposed it.

Can anyone tell me the details on this BSOD crash right here? The cause I mean?

Not sure if it's enough information. That's the only BSOD I have and I got that on the last RMA playing TW3. My first GPU never gave me BSODs they were just grey/black screens and TDR crashes. That could be memory above right? I ran a good 15 hour test on memory with memtest86+ so I don't think it's that.

I have been running my Rig with 2X EVGA GTX 580 Water cooled with EKWB full block running in SLI with X3 Multi Monitor. I never ever had issue since day one of SWTOR. I replaced the cards with EVGA GTX 980 Hydrocopper and problems started. I have read and read forums all over the place and many issues have been pointing to the card itself or drivers. I have reached out to EVGA and will try one last thing while I wait, and post an update once I find the resolution, and pass the info on to you guys. It's a major surprise that I did not have any issues with SWBF Alpha or Beta. That game has not even been released yet. Go Figure!

No anyone knows how to fix this problem? got the exakt same problem with my Evga 980 SC. And the store i bought it from dont find any problem with the card cuz it works good on like Battlefield and Benchmarking. The thing is i play Smite and there is where my problem is. Same goes for Blade & Soul.
I dont really know what to do here. Did it work with downclocking it? Do you think i can get a refound of EVGA when i bought it on a store in sweden? since they wont give me my money back or a new card...

Get your mfr's GPU tool - EVGA's is Precision X 16 or something like that. Try downclocking your card by 51Mhz or more. If all is stable with the downclock and breaks at normal clock the mfr should replace the GPU for you. That's what EVGA's done for me twice.

That said, the problem persisted in the game even on my 3rd 980SC. I stopped playing it much and haven't had a problem elsewhere. But I have a 10 year warranty and will be testing it again in the future. Bank on it. I'm hoping whatever the problem is will eventually be repaired in their refurb process. In the meantime, I was playing it downclocked before I stopped playing it much.

Im using stockclock on the card. havent overclocked it myself, and still it gets like that. I mean your not supose to clock down a card you pay that amount of cash for. Thats like payin for a 980 and bring it down to a 970. Thats bull****.
Yes. Well one thing is for sure, and that is that its only EVGAs card that does this ****, I just talked to my cardseller and they will take it in again and try it with the game i play aswel. so they will get the same problem witch means i think i get my MSI back. That one i dident have any problems with.

My point was to downclock the SC card to non-SC speed. If it works then, the mfr should replaced it as their mfr-set clock is unstable.

Good luck!

It appears that way.

The point is that if you have to downclock a GPU in order for it to remain stable then it is a problem beyond your control and the GPU's warranty should be honored by the mfr.

Re: GTx 980 sc grey screen 2015/11/12 03:00:38 (permalink)
Well. I threatened the company to sue them if they wont change my card to MSI. And it was them that recomanden EVGA to me. At first i had that MSI 980 card and it was no problem. Just me being stupid dident know just 1 fan was going to be active untill a surten Temp. Then Both activates. So i thought it was broken and sended it back, then they propose i get a EVGA card. So there is where my problem started. Got 1 EVGA card this Problem happend. I sended it back got another EVGA card and the exact same problem on that one. Now i dont want EVGA, and they say that there is nothing wrong with the card so they wont give me back my MSI. Untill i told them i will sue them doh, the answer i got was "Lets take this from the beginning you get to send it back and we will do another RMA search for the problem, I told them that it dosent occur in Benchmarking or Battlefield, Witch is the common things they run when they do the search for errors on the hardware. So now they will try the card with my game "SMITE" for 2-3 days gaming and that will for sure be time enough to give them the same problem. And i told them when u get the problem, please send me my MSI card back. So ive sended the card away this morning now i just wait and se whats happening. EVGA was good years ago so ive heard. But theese days it really sucks, wich is sad doh. They dont fix this problem, and it is with alot of EVGA 980 cards. and even with other EVGA cards. I also did contact EVGA support about this problem, But they seemd like they dident know about this problem, and when i linked this forum they wouldent even open it cuz its not there job. They have other staff to look and answer in this forum. So i guess i wont get any help from there doh. Even contacted NVidia Support about this problem since i thought it was a driver problem. But they cant do anything they say its EVGAs problem with there V Bios. Well i just hope i get my MSI back. to much problem with EVGA sadly.

Re: GTx 980 sc grey screen 2015/11/12 03:07:50 (permalink)
Just got his from EVGA Support "Your GPU is an SC (SuperClocked), which means that it is already overclocking. This is a feature and not a defect that requires repair.

For games that do not support overclocking, you just need to open Precision X andlimit the power target below 0 until the GPU doesn't go above the boostclock. Once you have reached this setting, you can save the profile to run in the background for any game that doesn't support overclocking. Once you have this profile, it will solve the issue for any of these games"

You think that is the problem? the games cant handle the overclock?

Any news regarding this issue?
I've tried increasing voltage, downclocking and messing with power target, seems to go away after I move stuff but always comes back, seems to happen more often to games that don't require too much GPU (EVE Online), and very rarely to never on games like Witcher 3.

If you use Precision X and underclock the card by 51mhz or more and the problem goes away, it's an RMA. The card will not remain underclocked. You have to use Precision X every time you test it/play your game.

I RMA my GPU card twice and the latest GPU card I received on Jan 11, 2017 is having Random solid color screen freezes starting today.
This will be the third time I have RMA a EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti K|NGP|N ACX 2.0+ since June 3, 2016.
