Hello Gang,

Does this MB BIOS support a PCIe SSD to be a primary drive?
Just want to confirm / ask opinions.

Looking to add M.2 adapter card (see below).  Will it work?, and if so will there be any conflict.

Slots configured (SLI):
PE1 = GTX 780 (6GB)
PE2 = GTX 780 (6GB)
PE4 = GTX 780 (6GB)
PE6 = PCIe SSD - PCIe 3.0 4-Lane Adapter (Samsung SM951 M.2 SSD)

Thanks All!!!

    I am running almost the same setup and configuration with 980's, and am having the same problem... The bios will not recognize the Samsung SM951 drive. I have it in a PCIe 3.0 4 Lane adapter as well.... PLEASE ISSUE A BIOS FIX!!! I really would like to run my OS off the Samsung SM951 SSD M.2 drive...

    There is no BIOS problem i think.
    CPU have only 16 Pci-Ex line. If you use 3 sli setup it was: 8+4+4
    And there are no any additional lines for your SSD.
    I suggest you to use X99 platform and 2011-3 CPU coz it have more pci-ex lines.

    The issue has nothing to do with not having enough PCIe lanes... The EVGA Z97 Classified has enough PCIe Lanes to run Quad SLI at 8 lanes each. That's not the problem at all. You can simply check in your bios UEFI and see that the PCIe lanes are all running at the needed speeds... the 3 Graphics cards are running at the needed 8 lanes for SLI configuration, while the 4 lane adapter is running at the needed 4 lanes. The issue is that the Bios will not recognize the Samsung SM951 as a bootable device. While the BIOS is recognizing that the M.2 PCIe 3.0 adapter is plugged in to a PCIe slot, this does no good if the BIOS does not have the proper drivers to recognize it as a bootable device.

    I switched from an ASRocks Z97X Killer Fatality Board so that I could utilize the full speed potential of the Samsung SM951. The ASRocks board had a BIOS update that included supported drivers for the Samsung SM951. The downfall with the ASRocks board was that it did not have enough PCIe Lanes to run 2-Way SLI and the M.2 PCIe Adapter all at once, which left the Samsung SM951 drive limited to the built in PCIe 2.0 M.2 Slot on the board. I was able to run one 980 with the M.2 PCIe 3.0 Adapter and the Samsung SM951 would have a read speed of 2.4+ gigabytes per second... and a write speed of 1.5+ gigabytes per second... I then tested 2-Way SLI 980's and placed the Samsung SM951 into the PCIe 2.0 M.2 Slot on the board. My speeds were drastically cut....read speed of 750 megabytes per second... and a write speed of 750 megabytes per second... This is because PCIe 2.0 is limited to 800 megabytes per second. The ASRocks board left me torn between SLI configuration, or the full speed potential of the Samsung SM951.

    So that's when i decided to upgrade to the EVGA Z97 Classified Board, but to my surprise this board does not have BIOS that supports the Samsung SM951 as a bootable drive. I know that the Samsung SM951 is fully working while attached to the M.2 PCIe 3.0 adapter, and that I am able to run 3-Way SLI all at the same time. While with windows 8.1 installed onto a separate SSD I am able to initialize 3-Way SLI threw the NVidia Control Panel, and I am also able to use the Samsung SM951 to it full potential, by full potential I am tested out of this world speeds.....

    That's why there needs to be a BIOS update/fix to Support the Samsung SM951 as a bootable device, so that the OS can be installed onto it.

    PciEx controller was integrated in CPU. MB haven't any additional lines. MB can multiplex pciex lines from CPU.

    Re: Z97 Classified - BIOS & PCIe SSD 2015/11/02 09:35:19 (permalink)
    The EVGA Z97 Classified uses a PLX Chip to provide 3 & 4 Way SLI Capabilities, yes with out a PLX Chip you would be limited to the max PCIe lanes built into the CPU... With the EVGA Z97 Classified it does not matter....

    Like I mentioned above, I switched from the ASRocks Z97X Killer Fatality board. It does not have a PLX chip, so when you add the 2 980's and the M.2 PCIe 3.0 adapter, you can not run SLI configurations because the max PCIe Lanes on the i7-4970K are 16 . To run SLI, NVidia requires that the cards be running minimum 8x each = 16x.... okay so now we have that covered.... when you add the M.2 PCIe adapter which requires 4x, it knocks one of the 980's down to 4x, so now NVidia will not enable SLI Config because you are not satisfying the minimum 8x each card.

    so....
    MB with no PLX Chip & CPU with 16 PCIe Lanes
    (1)GPU will run @ 16X
    (2)GPU's will run @ 8x8X (total 16x) SLI
    (2)GPU's & (1)PCIe Adapter will run 8x4x4x (total 16X) NO SLI

    EVGA Z97 Classified will run the following because of the PLX Chip
    16X Single
    16X16X 2Way SLI
    16X8X8X 3Way SLI
    8X8X8X8X 4Way SLI

    Update from my findings (still not solved, but much closer):

    Clean system all new, just using bar minimal equipment just to get it up and running and slowly do updates/ etc. before I add all the water blocks/SLI/ etc.

    System has the following:

    MB = Z97 Classified (BIOS 2.02)
    CPU = Intel i7 4790K
    Memory = 4x4Gb Corsair DDR3 Dominator Platinum 2133mhz
    PS = Corsair 1200i
    GPU = GTX 780 (6Gb)
    Using very buttom PCIe slot... PCIe_X8_6 slot (Marked as PCIe_X8_5 on MB though, but manual and BIOS claims its PCIe #6)= Addonics ADM2PK4 PCIe adapter for M.2 (which is a Samsung SM951 M.2 128Gb PCI-Express 3.0 Internal SSD)

    Step 1:
    Enter BIOS and go to "Boot" tab and change "Boot mode select" from "Legacy" to "UEFI"
    Step 2 (from same window):
    Click "CSM Configuration" and from that page change all options to "UEFI" settings
    Step 3:
    Save and Exit BIOS
    Step 4:
    Plug Windows 10 USB into any available USB 2.0 slot
    Step 5:
    After few windows general screen you will come to the window "Windows Setup" screen... Here I had to "Delete" "Drive 0 Partition 4" (even though it was brand new... whatever), then I was able to Click "New" and Windows automatically created 4 partitions = 1) Drive 0 Partition 1: Recovery (450.0MB) 2) Drive 0 Partition 2: System (95.0MB) 3) Drive 0 Partition 3: MSR (Reserved) (16.0MB) 4) Drive 0 Partition 4: Primary (118.7GB) ... with "Primary" highlighted click "Next in lower right screen for Windows 10 to start installing.
    Step 6:
    TBD.... see below where the problem occurs

    Windows 10 initial install happens flawless... until it comes to its first "restart", then things get goofy:
    1) Upon first "restart" Windows will start all over from "Step 5"
    2) If USB (Containing Windows 10 Software) is removed and PC is restarted... PC will automatically boot into BIOS (without hitting delete key...just goes there automatically)

    So that is where I am at and awaiting Product Manager to contact me back.  I will surly update this as soon as I get it working.

    Its close!!! but something is missing.

    I did notice in the BIOS under "Boot" and also under "Boot Override" I did not see anything referencing a Samsung, or Drive, or PCI-e Addonics or anything of that nature.

    If you have any suggestions... I'm all ears.  I dont know a lot about htis stuff but wanted to share what I know

    Same thing here.... its because the Bios is not recognizing it as a bootable drive.... unless EVGA does an update/fix it wont recognize it!

    I spent all this money on the SSD and all this money on the best 1150 socket board on the market (EVGA Classified) and they don't work together, but my cheap ASRocks board supports it.... TISK TISK EVGA really rethinking some of your products!

    This really is an interesting issue.... I thought the 1.08 BIOS included booting of pcie, etc, because I think it also included NVME support, etc... I know your trying the 2.0 BIOSes but see if the 1.08 BIOS does the trick, although chances are you may have already done this....

    I have tried updating one of the 3 BIOS on the board to the newer BIOS and still no luck at all... just cant get it to recognize the Samsung SM951, Windows OS includes the needed drivers for the SM951 that's why the drive is found when installing the first part of the OS, but the board BIOS can not find the SM951 to start the second portion of installation (after restart). This is why it restarts the first initial install... because its most likely reading off the install USB, because BIOS cant find a boot partition.

    Just tried BIOS v1.08... results were actually a little less progression than that with v2.02

    In my steps written above... at Step 5 "Windows Setup"... windows will not make new partitions.  Therefore it will not even attempt to install windows 10.  Says "This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controler is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu".

    Like Shawn says... Looks like we are all waiting for EVGA to update/fix this in the BIOS.  Until then... it will continue to sit idol.

    I have tried almost everything... i have also talked to EVGA for about 2 hours over the phone and could not get it to work... starting to lose faith in EVGA... ;-( right now i have my OS on a normal SSD threw SATA while my SM951 sits in the case as an auxiliary drive... SADNESS

    Ouch... Your right this is disappointing... I think one of the main benefits of this MOBO is that you have some extra PCIE lanes through PLX switching. It seems like an ideal board for an SLI GPU setup and a PCIE SSD! Should in theory give you some of the best performance on the z97 platform... Was part of the reason I wanted to buy this board as I was thinking about adding second graphics card and a pcie ssd in time... Hopefully the issue will be resolved by then!

    I was just about to order one of the 950pro M2 cards and a PCIe card for my Z97 CLASSIFIED..... Glad I read this thread first, does anyone have any response from EVGA about a bios update to add boot support for these devices. I am beginning to regret not getting the Z97 deluxe from ASUS right now. With all the available PCIe lanes on the Classified board it would sure be a waste not to be able to boot from the card.....

    !!!OMG!!! GREAT NEWS!!!

    I am as we speak, writing this update on my EVGA Z97 Classified Board with Windows 8.1 Running off my Samsung SM951 M.2 SSD attached to a PCIe 3.0 Adapter.... I got a great email from EVGA with a very nice attachment. EVGA sent me a BETA BIOS to try, I am sorry that i can not share it with anyone, but I am happy to say that EVGA has listened and has it working as of right now... the BIOS update has given the board the proper drivers needed to recognize the SM951 as a bootable UEFI drive. PLEASE HOLD IN THERE SM951 owners! EVGA has reclaimed there great name!!!!

    OH YEA PS.... Windows 8.1 installed on my system in less than 4 mins from start to finish (Full SM951 SPEED!)

    Glad that EVGA got a beta on this, hopefully it will come out soon.

    I was promised a call back and never got one but I trust Shawn as he showed support on this treat since it was started.

    EVGA... please give us feedback or PM me please.

    Thanks!!!

    Believe me, if the two ports M2 (E key and M key) were identical to the pins, I would have tried a resolder for M2 key M slot, but EVGA has done everything possible to put as in difficulty, not to compete for performance.
    I also do not understand why he did not show yet the promised revision of the manual of Z97 Classi, explaining many of the issues raised in the forum. Or why not open a special thread to respond to the issues, even punctual, because I am 100% sure that these messages are read.
    All this makes me think that EVGA will not invest efforts in correcting this series of motherboards trough new revisions, precisely because they are no longer the future. We must accept that, unfortunately.

    Not really overly impressed with the lack of official response on this matter from EVGA. New bios anytime soon?

    Hello EVGA,
    I have been patiently awaiting 4 weeks now (3 Weeks for a returned phone call from a product manager).

    I'm now beyond my return time on the M.2 so I need something to happen.

    I was told by EVGA tech on the phone it would work, so I bought the M.2 and adapter PCIe Card... and it doesn't... no problem because i was told a BIOS update would be coming... tick tick tick....

    I am a patient person pleas assist as I still cannot use all this new equipment.

    Sincerely,

    P.S.   Happy Thanksgiving to all!!!
