That is way too much for a dual SLI motherboard. For $300+ you can get a motherboard that supports four video boards. MSI makes a good product and this Z170 will work nicely:

I agree that the i7-6700k is a better choice and worth the difference in price to get the extra speed and higher clock rates from the factory without the need for overclocking. The price does fluctuate due to availability but can be found for $369.99 on average.

Z97 motherboards are a stable proven platform and with a CPU that boosts to 4.4 GHz there is no reason to overclock there either.

There are GSKILL Trident Z 3000MHz 2x8 for 105$ but that memory is with higher latency and it's not QVL.
And Skylake with new memory controller could show little better results with 3000MHz compare to 2400MHz memory...
Maybe is even better to stay on Skylake platform 4 cores with HT Link will be OK for games...
i7-5820K have other advantages but for games for now not and you could save little in power bill, if he choose Skylake, better to stay Skylake only much better. I even hear that soon developers will recommend nothing less than i7 for newer games as best configuration...
 
But if customer want it's possible to build nice X99 platform for same price with 4x4GB memory (Quad Channel), Intel with 6 cores,
some nice MSI X99 USB 3.1 board not expensive, or some ASUS X99A-USB 3.1 or X99S-USB 3.1...Depend what he like more.

No Devil Cannon. That's past and he shouldn't look on back.
Intel Z170 or eventually X99 platform are much better support for fast new M.2 drivers in future and overclocked i7-6700K will work better in multi applications than i7-4790K... It's not good to buy older platform only because CPU have highest Turbo and than it's same as i7-6700K. Later Intel will launch i7-6790K and what than...DDR4 cost same as DDR3, motherboard cost similar.
Now is time of Z170 and X99. Maybe owners of Z97 don't have reason to upgrade now because next year will be something better and their platform is strong, but when someone invest 1700-1800$ he should buy real gaming PC with all newest parts on market.
That's i7-6700K and GTX980Ti 6GB and he will play 3-4 years with that PC and after that he will be useful for many things on not for newest games in highest resolution and details. 
It's not same when you say now I still have DDR3 and for 2 years when you say I still have DDR3.
Man invest now and he choose right platform for gaming. For work is maybe better X99 but Z170 is excellent newest and better investing in Z170 than Z97 anyway. Z97 and Z87 are very similar, that's old platform, 8 PCI-E lanes Gen 2, Z170 have 20 PCI-E lanes Gen 3, much wider possibility for different devices. Everything build in next 3-4 years will fit much better on Z170 than Z97, even USB 3.1 support, that's 100% faster transfer than USB 3.0.
 

He should really dump the Seagate drive and get a Western Digital Blue or Black drive instead, preferably the Black would be a better match with a SSD and has a better warranty. The Seagate drives just aren't as reliable as the Western Digital drives and have pretty short warrantys. I like the Hitachi's drives myself and they seem to have excellent reliability. I have a couple much older Deskstars that are still working well and I know a lot of OEMS used them in their products, like Iomega, and their warrantys are as good as WD's, so you don't have to be too leery of them if you want to give them a shot too. I have a old CM Stacker 830 SE case I'm trying to give him but I don't think his son likes it he wants a window case lol
like mine HAF X 942 but with no fan.
I have two PSU old HX 1000 42A rail and  X-3 70A rail PSU I hope he takes and spend the money else were.

Jesus, sellers are crazy completely with Skylake price.
i7-6700K and Maximus VIII Hero = 640$. But for such build for 2-3 years not worth going with less than i7-6700K...

That would be my choice for that price. Board have M.2 transfer up to 32, Internal USB 3.1,
small slot for Sound card, for such price it's enough.
Board is not so good as Maximus VIII Hero but normal user will not have problems and  processor is even stupid to talk about that.
Everything else is not important so much... but if they want Skylake OK.
