Such positive vibes from a bunch of car people

I'm still rusty at driving manual though, never drove one in my life. I have most of it down except for takeoffs and the shifting between 1st and 2nd. Even stalled a few times at red lights and made the person behind me go BEEP BEEP!

BTW, when shifting from 1st to 2nd, the engine RPM stays high and therefore causes jerkiness when going into 2nd, even when I let go of the clutch slower... my buddy drives a BRZ (and granted, has like 12 years of experience driving manual) and manages to smooth shift every single gear, almost like an automatic. Any tips??!!

Also, hope I don't do too much damage to the clutch, I try my best not to ride it (haven't really smelled burning yet). Those WRX clutches are supposed to be pretty durable eh?

From 1st to 2nd you need to figure out what RPM best suites your car, But also let it out slowly as you're doing it.

Me for instance, I shift at 3,000-3,500 because it's the best moment for me to shift perfectly while just driving normal. Just don't rev it too high and don't release clutch too quick.

Also since you said it's your first manual, remember not to press the gas while shifting... You can press it when you begin to lift the clutch (I do it, But until close to releasing the clutch). Just try to time everything right.

I guess practice makes perfect... I find myself learning very fast though. Drove to and from work today without any issues, except for a few jerky starts, and I only started driving manual about 2 days ago.

Good news is there's this huge area right beside my house where they're building a new neighborhood, so there's no houses yet, only roads and intersections and stop signs. Perfect empty area to practice at night time since there's no cars around and nobody to disturb In fact I just got back from an hour long driving session there practicing takeoffs and reverse etc. then I successfully reversed into my driveway which is an incline without burning the clutch.

You know another thing I hate now that I drive manual?? SPEED BUMPS, that's right! I never been a fan of them now they REALLY SUCK!! Reasons are very obvious lol...

Great advise, they really helped on my practice run tonight!

    +1 that's exactly where I shift 1-2 as well.

From everything I have seen, you want to wear the motor in to how you are going to drive it on a daily basis.

It is true with modern machining practices the worst thing you can do is baby the motor. The rings need a moderate to heavy load to seat. This doesn't mean bounce the thing off the rev limiter every shift either. Do not baby it. Moderate to heavy acceleration but don't exceed 4,000 rpm for first 300 miles....4,500 at 500....redline ok at 800 miles.

Yeah, motor break in on a newer vehicle is practically a thing of the past compared to what I was taught in automotive tech back when I was going to classes for automotive engine repair back in 2006.

I have built many motors . The rings wear to the rpm your going to run it @ ,When you baby one then you raise the rpm limit you are causing excessive wear to the rings. Best to run the engine the way you are going to run it. the only thing that helps is to run the engine hard down long hills then easy up the hills.

I constantly shift at 3-4k RPM, but as I hit more miles I'll rev up a bit higher. Currently I have about 180 miles on the car, so I'm still gonna keep it 4k or less, then a bit more and more.

I never owned a car so I wouldn't know, appreciate the info I guess! I was just told by buddies that I need to break in the engine first lol, my idea of "babying" the motor is not to exceed 4k RPM.

I was originally gonna get the silver but they didn't have it! So I saw the white and immediately fell in love. I see way too many blue Subies driving around and not enough light colors.

You will need some practice sitting stopped on a hill as well. It is all just practice ,then repetition. I hope you enjoy your new ride for many years. Pretty nice car for your first. :)

You will need some practice sitting stopped on a hill as well. It is all just practice ,then repetition. I hope you enjoy your new ride for many years. Pretty nice car for your first. :)

Fortunately it comes with a hill assist, so when I let go of the brake pedal it holds it for 2-3 seconds before I roll back, which gives me time to accelerate away I'm getting better and better everyday. I have a feeling that once I hit 1000 miles I'll be good enough to do some pulls I've seen 0-60 times of around 5 seconds for this car!

I've hit 210 miles today and I'm sitting at half tank. I haven't been driving like "granny" exactly either, cuz when I said I "babied" the motor I meant keeping it under 4k, but still accelerating fairly quickly most of the time, faster than normal traffic. I'd assume if I drove around like granny I'd get slightly better mileage, plus I hear people say that once the engine breaks in the mileage also goes up a bit, is this true? ATM I think I can get around 400 miles to the tank (15.9 gal tank) which is pretty freaking awesome for a car with this much power and aggressiveness!! Although the premium fuel is gonna be expensive (93 octane) but I must keep her happy right?

Another question, for a brand new car, how long should I let her idle and warm up from a cold start? Also do I need to let her idle to cool off a bit before shutting her off? I was told this needs to be done in the break in stage.

For warm up, no longer than 30 seconds. The car warms up faster when you drive it.....but this is where you baby it as the cold oil will have a much higher viscosity and not flow as well. Never drive hard until your engine reaches normal operating temperature.

For turbo cars I always recommend letting them idle 30 seconds before turning them off.....1 minute if you have just driven very hard.

Gotcha! I've been doing everything for about a minute actually, idle a minute before driving off cold start and after parking... granny style until the coolant temp needle reaches the middle range between C and H.
