I am looking to buy a X99 MB - researching EVGA Classified & Asus Rampage V Extreme - I am open to other MBs

I've read about issues with both of these MB in my forum research on several forms.

Asus RVE seems to be more mature "best OC MB"; but, reading about killed CPUs on restart - even if rare - makes me reconsider.

I've read about some stability issues with the Classified.

I am not sure I "NEED" either of these $$$$$ MB for my 2way SLI above freezing plans.

Looking to make an informed decision on this purchase.  So, any input form members are willing to share would be nice to see.

 What I have:
CPU is 5960X water cooled custom loop - will OC
GPU 2way SLI EVGA Titan X SC underwater -have been OCd in my Z97 MB
4K monitor with second monitor at lower res.
     PSU  EVGA 1600 P2

I do not plan on subzero or chilled, just my H2O loop.  (Maybe use  a heat exchanger if needed later - still above freezing)

My Uses:
CAD, games at times, benchmark runs - just to see what I can do.  Possibly video editing for my next adventure.

Also what to try Folding (on the EVGA team) - does MB matter much in folding performance?

I do not foresee a third Titan X at this time -  cost to performance issue for me.

Looking at: Asus Rampage V Extreme and EVGA Classified, also open to other boards that could support 3way SLI.

Planning on 32 GB or 64 GB of DDR4 (RAM Disk maybe)  not sure what speed of Ram - looking for cost/performance

Hope to find a Black Friday deal on MB & Ram, maybe even Intel 750 PCIe SSD

Thoughts?

While I can't comment on either of those boards I can comment on the folding question. No your board won't matter. Your folding potential will depend on your GPU's and CPU. The best bang for the electricity used will be GPU folding. So unless you board has an issue causing instability and restarts it doesn't matter.

Thanks for answering my folding based question Zophar.

I am open to other MBs brand and model.  If I never go 3way SLI - they both are probably over kill.

Since Intel 750 PCIe SSD are so good will probably not use M.2 for performance based storage.

After reading MB reviews for a week - there seems to be no clear winner - in the user reviews - thought I'd ask the form community for input.

I personally love my RVE and have had no issues with it since I bought it.

I got the RVE due to issues with the EVGA boards I had at the time, the lack of owners manual information and an overall frustration factor.

I recently won a x99 Classified, and will be testing out now that the bios has matured. I haven't had a chance to get past the tainted feelings I had when I got the micro and the classified when they were released.

Thanks Scarlet-Tech, always good to hear from experienced form members.  Your comments about the Classy are what I was seeing in my research.

I was wondering if EVGA has any plans for updating eATX X99 boards - like the Micro2, for the full sized boards - more than just BIOS updates.

I figure they will update them sometime next year, as the next series of 69xx are released.

I do see that they are removing more basic features, like the z170 removing many USB 2.0 headers.. I am not happy to see that. These boards are already missing features other manufacturers are adding, so it worries me for the future.

People say best motherboard is MSI Godlike, but it's expensive...
ASUS completely miss to offer normal X99 boards. They never launched so poor motherboard line for so good and innovative platform when buyers have so good option for upgrade. Actually they never had better option and more reason to abandon Z chipset and jump on Xtreme and ASUS completely fail to follow that. They probably knew long time ago about compatibility  between Broadwell-E and X99 and didn't want to make Rampage 5 Etreme, Rampage 5 Extreme USB 3.1, Rampage 5 Extreme Black and one more for Broadwell-E. They will launch before Broadwell-E board compatible with Haswell-E, probably R5E Black Edition as for Ivy Bridge-E. Maybe they even launch mATX Rampage 5 Gene and Rampage 5 Extreme Black Edition together, both in some Titanium Black style. But for Haswell E their options are poor. And only someone who don't know what to do with money could use PCI-E x8 slot for two USB 3.1 Ports and to pay that 100 euro more before single USB 3.1 device is seen on market, and on some places R5E/U3.1 cost 100 euro more.

I'm in the same boat; have a RIVE/3960x/690 and getting the itch to put two WC loops on my next one. Bought a couple Hydro 980ti's and they've been gathering dust the last couple months while I figure it out. Have a 900D from a drawing that I'll finally use! I'm not sure which memory to go with as well as mobo. Figure I'll sell the RIVE/3960x/690 as a set and get enough for a new mobo/processor.

Mobo decision will really make everything else fall into place!

For now look like MSI X99 Godlike is premium X99 board, but it's very expensive and have some weird details, dragons...etc...
She worth maybe 460-470 euro.
ASUS Rampage 5 Extreme Black Edition will be best probably. For now is better investing example in MSI X99A Xpower AC.
Only stay some yellow color but that's probably possible to mod with some silver or red or grey paint marker.
It's bad because you can't find today many mATX premium motherboards with completely same quality of VRM as big motherboards.
It's important to everything work as on big motherboard only smaller for max two graphic cards one x8 slot and one x4 slot.
ASRock make mATX motherboards with nice power section but in weird colors.

I'd like to thank all of the form members that have given input to my OP.

Seems to have run its course on the MB question - everyone has their favorite one.

As I stated in the first post - my timeline is next couple of weeks - Black Friday - Cyber Monday - will look for a nice sale.

What about Quad Channel DDR4 Ram?

Does Ram speed make a large impact for score of benchmark testing - Fire Strike ? 2400 vs 2800 vs 3000

With two EVGA Titan X SC - 12MB GDDR5 on each card --- How much system Ram would be a minimum for the eight core 5960X CPU?

16GB enough (budget pick)  or would 32GB have any advantages?  Win10 Pro 64bit OS

Also interested if the X99 MB discussed support NVMe drives natively (BIOS), to be used for boot drive - Intel 750 PCIe

You should now invest in 32GB because it's not expensive, 4x8GB.
MSI now have some very good options, on first place because they are cheap and contain all features...
And most important all of them are black somehow and dark...
GIGABYTE and ASRock keep some weird color solution completely without option for some black darker motherboard.
That's very bad because ASRock have some mATX boards with very nice VRM for mATX board, I think better than most MSI boards.
But MSI really have cheap board for X99 and they look OK.

MSI X99A SLI KRAIT EDITION 9 (USB 3.1) 230$
MSI X99A SLI PLUS (USB 3.1) 200$
MSI X99A MPOWER (USB 3.1) 300$
MSI X99 RAIDER (USB 3.1) 190$

I think that RAM have really small impact on Firestrike and other 3DMark tests.
Today you can find budget 16GB 2400MHz LPX litterary for 100$, with cheapest motherboard and CPU from Micro...
price will not pass 600$... Some people pay 600$ for i5, ROG motherboard and 4x8GB memory...
Better to build X99 with i7 and 16GB memory.

Hello,

Your choice for an X99 motherboard is very obvious with your criteria. Its any x99 motherboard.

Unless you have very specific needs such as Msata or m.2 ports; any x99 is going to perform the same.

Hello all,
Having a very recent x99 new build I could not be more pleased with the platform.
Also owning two Asus boards, x58 R3E and x99 R5E.
The two different boards have been a very positive move for me.
My ' Gaming eXperience has never been better.
Very cool running, and quiet machine.
I will add; the G Skill 2800 at 64 Gig Kit seems very stable at the rated speed.
128 GB of memory does not really seem like too much.
I'm looking forward to see what the next Generation GPUs / CPUs will do.

I'm looking forward to see what the next Generation GPUs / CPUs will do.
X 99 R5E/3.1, i7 5820K, RipJaws 64G @ 2800 MHz 15-16-16-35 @ 1.25V, GTX 980 ti HC, SM 951 @ 512G/Windows 10 Pro, Noctua 140x3 Swiftech Radiators and Reservoir / integrated Pump, and certainly not least SuperNova 850 P2.

Very nice.  Create and post on modsrigs of your rig.  Would like to see your system and loop.

Vlada,

I agree that some of the MB have colors that are not appealing to me - reason enough to rule them out.

Only looking at ATX & eATX boards - the more PCIe 3.0 x 16 slots the better.

Cyber Monday is around the corner - hoping to find nice MB & DDR4 on sale.

I have no issues with buying a MSI MB.  My MSI X58 Big Bang - Xpower is still running strong and has always been stable as a rock when OCing.

Does EVGA site usually advertise Black Friday or Cyber Monday sales ahead of time?

Any EVGA X99 MB going on sale this weekend?

From my experiences, I've seen the same deals and steals from Monday (Today) till Cyber Monday so nothing really changes on "Cyber Monday" other than giving you a last day for deals and steals online.

Online Etailers might have some advertisement going for Cyber Monday if its not already posted.

The X99 Classy looks nice -

The 90 degree 24 pin is a Great Idea

The 90 degree USB 3.0 header - not so much - does not look like it will work in my Phanteks Primo case - without some cutting.

Does anyone know if an adapter exists for the USB 3.0 header?

What you need male-female USB 3.0 Internal adapter easy to bend?
You probably need some without big plastic on the end because small space between motherboard and case?

Nice find Vlada - thanks!

Would have preferred a nice compact 90 degree plastic elbow adapter without exposed wires - or even sleeved wires.

The part Vlada found is at least doable without cutting the case.  Exploring this site - they do offer premium wire ones also.

Hey - EVGA - you should include something like this with the X99 Classified MB!

They will not offer that because very small number of cases have limited space and edge as Phanteks Primo...
I don't know for any other similar case.
First I didn't know what you ask at all. Than I saw Phanteks Primo Internal USB 3.0 cable from I/O Panel and place of connector on
X99 Classified and I figure out where is problem...
Because all adapters with plastic and can't fit.

It is not included as there is not much demand for them in most cases, however we do offer one here as well.

http://www.evga.com/Products/Product.aspx?pn=W002-00-000028

I use one on my X79 Dark because the case I have the front panel could not reach and this gave me enough extra length, also it is VERY low profile and I can bend it to wherever I want and it just works, no complaints.
