Hopefully someone can help :)

Thinking of buying the new Samsung 950 PRO, M.2 (22x80) PCIe 3.0 (x4) NVMe 1.1 SSD

Does the M.2 slot on the X99 Classified support PCi-E 3.0  or does it have to be via a PCI-E card.

Currently using a Kingston Hyper X M.2 PCi-E 2.0 X4, But no point changing if there is no speed increase to achive.

It is currently PCIe 2.0 on the x99 Classified. I am not honestly sure about speed, but that is the question I can answer.

The M.2 on the classified is PCI-E 2.0 x4 as Scarlet already posted but you could get a PCI-E Card to use PCI-E 3.0 on one of the PCI-E Lanes.  That will increase your performance but it is up to you if you feel like spending more.

Seems a shame the M.2 Slot is obsolete already for newer drives.

Thanks for the replies, confirmed what I'd thought, looks like an addon card, or stick with what I have.

I didn't saw Samsung 950 Pro M.2 before. Look interesting.
Is it better than SM951? If it's good I would bought him rather than anything else for OS.
And 512GB version have better specification than 256GB.

It is the new retail version slight tweaks and it's own driver, rather than the OEM 951.

Thanks, after I upgrade graphic card and EKWB Predator I will bought one if there are less problem with Windows Installation on him.
I would like to price of 1TB SSD drop. Not some fastest model, but 75% of SATA III SSD are excellent as gaming driver for games installation.
I mean if someone invest in M.2 than hardware should be without issue and should be fast... I'm not for upgrade on some M.2 devices where speed is even lower than two newest SSD in Raid Mode. But if specifications are good as these two M.2 than why not. This speed of 512MB you can't reach with RAID and RAID have own headaches.
For me this Samsung 950 Pro is better solution than Intel 750.
I loved Intel 750 SSD but I can't install him because 28 lanes CPU.
He need x8 Gen 3 for full speed, only if my graphic card work on x8 I could use him.
But never mind speeds are similar, my M.2 slot is free and good work with full speed up to 32Gb/s.

Kingston HyperX Predator SHPM2280P2/240G cost 320e in Serbia.
First that's insane price, second I don't know how they not shame to ask same price for far slower device than SM951 and 950 Pro.
    SHPM2280P2/480G cost 590e in my town...speeds are 1400/1000 compare with Samsung 2500/1500.
I expect to find Samsung 950 Pro for about 300e 512GB version and I recommend to Kingston to little pay attention and become competitive or seriously to drop price on 120$ for their device. I didn't hurry... When I saw ex Samsung device I didn't want to invest in something bellow 2200/1400.
And looks like this two drivers 256GB and 512GB could be one of most wanted Samsung drives. I mean they sold really lot 840 and 850 SSD in my country. But they could repeat that with 950 Pro. I hear price are 256GB 200$ and 512GB 360$.
Only I never saw so big difference in speed between two different size and really worth invest immediately in 512GB.
Kingston used situation because no many drives on market and than start to sell M.2 30% faster than SATA III SSD and people hurry to buy like difference is 300%, only to connect first M.2 device no matter on anything but usually Samsung and Intel and leaders, weird that CORSAIR didn't done nothing.
And their M.2 will cost 50% more than Samsung.

The Kingston was the fastest drive in it's day you can't really compare old models with new ones.
And there is probably no difference in daily use, probably see no gain, it's just that bug of wanting the latest carrot being dangled and look at the numbers hype :)

Off course if you update from Kingston M.2 to Samsung Pro you will not feel any difference except when you work something.
I doubt that difference is visible even between fastest SSD and M.2 but difference is huge in read/write.
You should wait this Samsung 950 Pro.
If I need to choose between two similar device I love more Intel than Samsung but both made amazing hardware.
I hope this black label on 950 Pro could resist high temperatures...
Very rear I see some hardware and become priority to me as Samsung 950 Pro.

Yes the Intel is a great drive, but twice the price and seems to be a bit picky bootwise from what I've read.
The Black label looks like it will be in the bottom of the case rather quickly, a cheap alloy heatsink with a logo would have been a better idea.
Just waiting on the Samsungs coming into stock, probably get one.

Yes some kind of nice cooper or aluminum plate would be great.
EKWB decide to cooldown Intel 750 SSD with nice silver waterblock.
But this label is better than on SM951 and XP941.
If some fan is 15-20cm close no problems. Don't need to be cold only to keep temps deep in safe temps.
Interesting peace of hardware, we have Samsung distributor in Serbia but in Hungary will be cheaper.
I hope specifications are true, Samsung decide to force people to pay 350e rather than 200...specifications are much better.
For me 256GB is enough for OS... But speed is much lower.

How do you know it's only Gen 2, on my R5E is Gen 3.0.
Exactly for Samsung 950 Pro. His Interface is PCIe 3.0 x4 (up to 32 GB/s) NVMe 1.1.
To give me some nice speed before X190 and Intel PCI-E SSD.
    EVGA X99 Micro 2 is M.2 x4 Gen 3.
x4 Gen 3 is minimum what boards need for M.2 and NVMe support.
Without that goodbye Samsung 950 Pro 512GB M.2 with speed 2500/1500 for 360$.
That's serious handicap. There are only one solution than but for people with i7-5930K and i7-5960X and 1-2 graphic cards.
Installation Intel 750 SSD in PCI-E Gen 3 slot.

No idea but its unfortunate since at the same time most competitor boards if not all, all had 3.0 speeds.  The only way to get 3.0 speeds is to get an adapter card and use one of the PCI-E slots.

Intel 750 is only x4. x8 is required by that monster Intel teased P3608. It's highly debatable if 950Pro is better than 750. Unless you can guarantee that every request you make on it is QD=1 then yes. If you want work then 750 quickly shows it superiority is multitasking environment. And you can't compare reliability of Intel drives and Samsung. There is vast chasm between both companies and Intel is well beyond the reach of Samsung on that front. Samsung pricing is better, but for work or critical tasks 750 any day of the week. I'm a bit annoyed that EK released waterblock for 750 literally 10 days after I've put loop back to work. Grr....

Moving to M.2. Anyone interested in M.2 drive. It doesn't mater if its AHCI or NVMe. These things get hot (AHCI) or blazing hot (NVMe). Must provide enough airflow. Keep them below 50C which is often impossible in tight spaces.

Yea I saw that later. Somehow I thought he need x8 speed.
I love Intel company more than Samsung. But for me M.2 speed transfer less than Gen 3 up to 32 is reason to change board.
I looked ASUS X99M-WS mATX and few people are interested for that board. In moment when they figure out that M.2 transfer is up to 10Gb/s big percent of people lose interest. From that moment I didn't visit that topic any more and read other stuff.
As guy above say only chance is over PCI-E slot, but that exclude guys with i7-5820K because need processor where graphic card in first slot work on x16 even if other slots are occupied. That's i7-5930K and i7-5960X.
With i7-5820K when you Install Intel 750 graphic card work on x8 speed.

And what is exactly the problem with x8 VGA? My is permanently crunching WCG/[link=mailto:SETI@Home]SETI@Home[/link] + some gaming without disabling/suspending BONIC client and is running x8 because all other slots are occupied (talking Classy now). There is no scientific basis to claim that current VGAs at x8 run slower than x16 (except idiotic tests like Furmark, situation which never ever takes place in real life).

    It's not problem...
Somehow I want to convinced myself that it's same but people don't like to see x8 speed today.
Price is similar 750 and 950 Pro, if I need to choose I will rather option with x16.
Write speed on Samsung M.2 look much better, and that's not weird it's never device.
On Z170 is easier, chipset is enough to keep them on full speed and same will be on X190.
On Z170 have place for two Samsung M.2 950 Pro and two Intel 750 SSD and Sound Card and SLI on x8 or x16 if board have PLX Bridge.

This is best X99 combination and EKWB Supremacy EVO CPU block on Processor.
