Seem to be having a big run of bad luck last few days. Now doing an install of a Z97 Stinger Core3D.
Appeared to be going fine until I got to installing the audio drivers. Here's what happens:

Not showing in device manager either.
I then noticed the BIOS was showing version 2.02... not sure how that is possible since ver1.09 is the most recent, so I flashed the BIOS to 1.09 but still getting same error when I try to install the audio drivers. I am getting no sound whatsoever. Was able to install Windows 7 and all the updates no problem, and all the EVGA drivers etc, everything except audio. Tried Windows troubleshooter to look for hardware, didn't find anything.

Anyone have any suggestions? I have a plug on the motherboard to take sound to the ports on the front of the case.. could that have an effect?

Help please...

Which driver pack are you trying to install? There's the latest one from 3 August, and the earlier ones from September and May 2014.

Tried the latest and the one prior. Both had same result. Wonder if it's a hardware issue. Was able to get sound through HDMI at least.

Is the sound card showing as an unknown device in the device manager at least? If not, and it's enabled in the BIOS, then you should RMA the board.

You need to check in the System BIOS that the HD Audio Controller (Creative Core3D Quad-Core Audio Processor) is enabled in Onboard Device Configuration..When another audio device is detected, such as in a graphics card, the onboard HD Audio Controller is sometimes disabled and you need to manually enable it..Otherwise, the onboard HD Audio Controller will not be detected and consequently not showing up in Device Manager or allow the driver install..That sounds like what the deal is.

The EVGA Download Center indeed shows 1.09 as the latest BIOS for an E972 Stinger Core 3D, and the 2.02 seems to be a BETA BIOS for an E973 Stinger WiFi..Thinking that the 2.02 is a BETA BIOS installed when the board was built but isn't yet available in the Download Center for the E972, but that's just speculation on my part.

How about when it doesn't show there at all? :)
Under Onboard Device Config, all I see is:

    Intel LAN (enabled)
         Wake on LAN (enabled)
    Azalia (enabled)
    mSATA/Mini PCIE Slot (enabled)
         Function switch (Mini PCIE)

    That's it...

...Azalia IS the integrated audio controller, right? Well it's enabled.

Yeah, it's enabled..Something isn't right like a driver/chip mismatch or the board is broken..Just for kicks I'd try the Realtek R279 driver for the Stinger WiFi and see what happens..If no joy, RMA the board like EVGATech_Erin said.

Core3D seems to be borked :( ..although I can get sound through HDMI, but quality not great and volume is really low for some reason. Also the time keeps resetting to 2008 after every shutdown, probably battery dead. It's my wife's machine so will have to wait to RMA it - she needs it this week.

Last night my printer stopped communicating.. seems the ethernet port died. Just unbelievable my luck lately.

At work 2 systems I need access to are spitting errors, and my VPN login keeps failing.

Couple of days ago I killed a Z170 Stinger motherboard.

Even my SMS authentication for one of my games is not responding today.

    *sigh*
