Just a heads-up for anyone trying to build a mini-ITX build using Z170 Stinger and a small case like the Corsair 250D.

The Corsair H100i GTX will not fit in the case with the EVGA Z170 Stinger - there is simply not enough room between the top of the motherboard and the radiator fans.

The Corsair H100i (non GTX, older model) will fit as it is 3mm less wide.. until you try to plug in the CPU power cord. The CPU power port is right on the very edge of the motherboard... that would be fine, except when you plug in the cord there, the securing clip that holds it in place sticks out beyond the edge of the motherboard and rubs against the fan. If the port was rotated 180 degrees it would work, but that's a design issue.

The only options are
  • cut off the securing clip on the power cord (probably not a good idea, but I took this option)
  • get thin 5mm fans (not ideal because of performance issues)
  • just mount a single 120mm or 140mm radiator at the front of the case instead (not ideal because of decreased performance)

Very frustrating.

Also the Z170 cover over the rear ports blocks the radiator, so had to remove it.

Also no USB header for the H100i.. just a big USB3.0 header for the case USB ports.

Starting to reconsider this entire build.    Should've done more homework.

Here's an example with a different motherboard and the H100i in the 250D case, so you know what I'm talking about.

    Hi Nereus,
I had the same problem with the lack of a USB 2 header when fitting a Corsair H80i GT. The solution is to get a USB 3 header to USB 2 connector.

Thanks, but yeah then I lose the USB3 ports on the front of the case.
Maybe just not use the Corsair software. There's 3 fan headers on the board, and I assume they are able to be controlled in BIOS.. so one fan header for the front case fan, one for the radiator fans using a splitter, and one for the H100 pump should work.
Damn it's a tight squeeze in that 250D case though!

I love small RIGs, in future people will even more to build smaller RIGs.
But I will not go below mATX. Because it's very small place and hard to install and reinstall hardware for cleaning and replace, you can't choose every component if you like, someone will not fit and you are limited with hardware.
Less space for dedicate Sound, and eventually some M.2 or PCI-E SSD.
For me is X99 Micro 2 one of best solutions. How much people will really need more than 28 lanes from i7-5820K.
Now is possible to find for same or cheaper price than i7-6700K and memory is just above 100$, 4x4GB 2800MHz.
But visual and functionality Mini ITX are nicer than Micro ATX.
Very important part is and choosing right case, functional. Some small case have better position for hardware than others.
