I got the 970 today. Stuck in a full tower system to test it. It's on it first wu and I have to say I'm not real happy with the fan noise. In the full tower case I have to keep the fans at 65% to keep the card at 62°C and that makes too much noise IMO. The plan for the card was to go into my file server which sits in the front room, right next to the TV and is a mATX case. I hate to think what kind of fan speed I would need to keep it in the lower 60's and the noise it would make. I don't have to mess with the 960's fan speed and it stays in the lower 60's and I can not hear the fans.

She does put out some nice PPD at stock speed, but I don't think I can have this card in the front room folding, even if I switched to a full tower. Think I'm going to sell it or put it in my daughter's pc and sell the GTX 680 that's in it.

This 970 is LOUD when folding... if I want to keep it over 1400MHz anyway.  And why wouldn't I want to have it cranked up to fold...  If I leave it on auto fan control, it's breaking 76C, core is staying around 1245MHz, & is doing about 6min per frame on current WU (p9430), but it's quiet....  If I speed up the fans to keep the card under 60C, core speeds up to 1404MHz, frame times drop to about 5min 42sec, but it's loud.

6min = 260,000 ppd
5min 42sec = 280,000 ppd

Looks like I need to slap my Kraken on it!

Yeah, I'm not real happy with the ACX cooler, fans are too small on it and you have to crank them up to keep the card cool. I just left mine at stock and it boost to 1354Mhz, with 65% fan speed to keep it at 62°C. I honestly can't wait for it to get done with the current wu so I can shut it down.

This is the card I have. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487076

This is the one I got

And current WU

After I get off work tomorrow, I'm gonna torture test it & if it passes, switch it over to water cooling

I put the card in my daughters system which is a HAF X case. Needs around 62% fan speed to keep it in the low 60's, like around 61°C. I just can't take the noise. I water cool my personal system, so I may be a bit on the dramatic side for fan noise.

Stock clocks.

Well, crap....  the 970 FTW has the same problem as my 660Ti, VRM's are outside of the cooling path of the Kraken G10 bracket   & worse, no mounting holes to add a passive heatsink to the 970   I had modified an old motherboard VRM heatsink for the 660Ti VRM's

But without holes to add the hs, if I can't find another way to cool the VRM's on the 970 while watercooling the GPU, looks like I may be returning it, cause it's just way to loud.

****....  PrecisionX IS THE REASON that this card is so loud

Seriously...  Seems that PrecisionX16 5.3.8 OSD was causing FarCry4 to crash before the game started to load every time I tried to play, even after reinstalling FarCry4. so I stopped PrecisionX OSD, start to play & crash about 5 - 15 minutes into it playing (5 out of 5 tries).  So then I close PrecisionX & I play 3 hours no problems.   Rebooted this morning & same problem is back, close PrecisionX again & no more crashes.  So, I uninstalled PrecisionX & when I unpaused folding, the fans never spun back up like they did....

After removing PX16, GPU settled in at 1392MHz core while folding at around 72C with ambient temp of 77F & 28% fan speed.  Under PX16 default setting, it was getting 1404MHz core at around 62C but with fan speed of 78%.

Re: What does it take to pump out 55k PPD? 2016/01/14 05:34:47 (permalink)
I know this is an old thread, but for future searches at this time, January 2016, for the last 6 months or so I was able to hit the 1.5M mark with the 750 Ti FTW about 50% of the time.  Some months I just barely missed due to low PPD WU's or accidentally pausing for the weekend.  Note that the Ti architecture is different than the standard 750.

So if you want a good shot at 1,500,000 for a lower price tag the 750 Ti is a good option.

I rather like the GTX 980 cards they use less power and fold great.

I am amazed with my 980 ti.  I replaced the 4 280x I had on the heater in the garage and I went from 500k-700k ppd at 1350 watt power draw to 480k-650k ppd at 320 watt power draw.  Just having the one 980 ti in the rig gets me around 2000ppd/watt off that rig (while crunching on the cpu).  I can't wait to see the efficiency of the Pascal cards when they release.
