Hey guys ,I'm currently having problems with my GTX 970, which make games unplayable. The card would stay at max clock and ram speed from start up, sometimes they'll dip, and go straight up to max a few seconds later. All of these things happen while the system is idle. Games werent smooth as they were before, the FPS is so low it makes every game unplayable. Are these signs of a faulty gpu?

My system specs:
i5-4690K 3.5GHz
GIGABYTE Z97X-GAMING 3
4X6GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 RAM
ThermalTake Toughpower Grand 850W 80+ Gold PSU

Hello, I was just playing with the 970, i found out that sometimes, overclocking can cause a lower performance, not sure why

Low performance when overclocking could be related to thermal throttling (gpu too hot). My situation is different, despite good temps under load, at 70 C, my gpu clock and ram speeds go max and min every few seconds, even in idle. This is an odd behavior, and it does impact my gaming experience.

Sounds like you may have a virus on your machine. Scan your system thoroughly with a good anti-virus software.

So I've decided to borrow another GTX 970 from my roommate's pc and slabbed it in my system. It works fine as its supposed to, I also tried to enable SLI but both cards dont sync their speed and usage with each other. And a scan result from bitdefender shows that my pc is clean, no threats were found.

Which 970 do you own?

I own a base clock model of the acx 2.0+ line up, no ssc or ftw. My roommate's gpu is the same model, but his works fine.

Have you run GPUz during any of your gaming sessions to see what it's doing?  Use the sensors tab.

It'll look something like this.  Post a screen shot of it.

Here are the top causes of why a GPU would run at full clocks at idle...

#1 You're running multiple monitors. Fix: Enable mutil display power saver using nvidia inspector.
#2 Your machine has a virus. Fix: Scan computer using malwarebytes.
#3 One or more programs running in the background are using your GPU. Fix: Perform a clean boot of windows.
#4 Power management mode inside the nvidia control panel is set to prefer maximum performance. Fix: Set power management mode to adaptive then reboot your computer.
#5 Running a resolution of 2560x1440 @ 144Hz. Fix: Change refresh rate to 120Hz.
#6 K-Boost is enabled inside Precision X. Fix: Disable K-Boost.
#7 Shadowplay is enabled inside geforce experience. Fix: Disable shadowplay inside geforce experience OR completely uninstall geforce experience from your machine (highly recommended)

Cards running in sli use to sync their speeds with each other, this no longer happens, gpu's in sli now run at their own individual speeds. Usages can also vary from game to game.

Thank you for those helpful tips, but unfortunately they didnt change anything. Could this be a faulty gpu or pcie slot?. I also ran some games with SLI, their fps avg at 20...

Could be a faulty card. Try your card in your roommates pc.

Problem solved! I tried to lift the gpu up gently while it was sitting in the pcie slot, booted the machine and BAM! It is now back into 2D mode. I guess the motherboard was the culprit.

So the card wasn't seated correctly. Good deal.

glad you got it sorted out. usually problems like these can be solved by reseating the graphics card and/or reseating the psu peg connectors.
