I recently received my 980 Ti Classified's last week and just received my EK-FC780 GTX Classy water blocks for them earlier today. After removing the ACX 2.0 coolers for the first time, I was surprised to find out that the memory chips on my video cards were manufactured by SK Hynix and are not Samsung chips. Is this the case to fill in the demand for the 980 Ti Classified's and cut back costs of manufacturing because I was expecting more from a Classified video card. I know that it probably and I mean probably doesn't matter at all at who manufactures the memory chips but I was very disappointed to find this out. Also with my recent purchase of a X99 Classified motherboard, I was very disappointed in the plain and I really mean plain rear I/O Shield. Even my previous X58 Classified3 came with a better I/O Shield. I've been a loyal EVGA customer since the nForce 680i days and have always had noting but top notch quality products from EVGA. But I'm almost regretting my recent purchases for my new build seeing other manufactures with the same products offering way more options and quality for each tier of item. I apologize for the rant but I really was expecting more from a Classified branded product IMO.

Only ONE 980ti has Samsung across all manufacturers.. Currently, that is the K|ngp|n. This isn't new, but it also isn't well known.

From what I understand, this was an Nvidia agreement, not a stock thing. I could be wrong about that interpretation though, so do not take it as fact.

This was mentioned by K|ngp|n himself. The MSI lightning is said to have Hynix as well, but they may possibly be shipping test models with Samsung to help boost sales..

Like I said it doesn't really matter, I was just expecting more from a "Classified" branded product that's all and was disappointed.

I have Hynix on every card I own, except the K|ngp|ns.. 4 of them are Classifieds, so it is almost expected that they will have Hynix by now.

I'm upgrading from my 780 Classified's which have Samsung memory chips, that's why I was expecting Samsung chips on the 980 Ti Classified. But not just that, the plain I/O Shield that's literally 1 piece of tin that came with my X99 Classified motherboard feels so cheap considering what I paid for it. My X58 Clasdified3 motherboard came with a much better quality I/O Shield. Now I know why the rear I/O Shield for the X99 Classified isn't included in any of the product images for it. If I had only known before hand it would have made a real difference with which manufacturer I would have went with for my motherboard. Sure, the rear I/O Shield is practically pointless, but something as small as it really makes a difference to someone like me.

You got lucky with the Samsung on the 780 Classy just like some others did. The 980ti classified was known, although not very much, to only have Hynix as it was discussed openly in the forums. If you had bought any other brand or model, except the K|ngp|n, it would have Hynix also.. Not sure why everyone went that way this time, but like I said, I think it was an agreement with Nvidia possibly?

I went with Asus on the x99, because they have been on the leading edge of components, and after doing a lot of research and even purchasing a x99 Classified, I never opened it because I wasn't happy with the EVGA stance.

The flimsy, cheap feeling I/O shield was a major complaint from the beginning when the board was released over a year ago.

    Post one, sentence one: http://forums.evga.com/m/tm.aspx?m=2298684

That is just one example. The bios took a long time to mature as they hunted issues as well, not to mention all of the RAM detection issues (the exact reason I don't own an x99 EVGA motherboard anymore).

The new board may be out in the new future, but we will see what they have changed. There are threads requesting changes and everything, as the issues you mention are still known.

yeah the hynix ram can do +700 at stock voltage just fine.

the samsung ram can do +700 with tighter timings, oh and it also scales better with temperatures and voltage. that is why samsung is better.

clock for clock, samsung is faster and samsung can clock higher ( in general, sometimes you get dud chips, it happens with every manufacturer )

Hynix and Samsung memory are same quality. Sometimes Hynix even OC better.
Customers search DDR4 always with Hynix modules as best and in most expensive kits.
