I'm just looking to play at 1080 resolution, using one monitor.  Would I get a substantial increase in framerate for games like Witcher 3 and Battlefield 4 or would I have to opt for a much more expensive video card like a 980?

A 560ti to a 960 would be a substantial upgrade.  You would be very pleased I believe.  Just make sure you get the 4gb version.

The 560 ti to 960 is a pretty big jump. Here's some numbers to help with your decision. I'm using the numbers from Tom's VGA charts found here: http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/2015-vga-charts/benchmarks,186.html
Notes: 1080p benchmarks only (since that's your desired resolution). Percentages are using the 560 as base. Ie, if 560 = 50fps, and GTX 960 is 100 fps, this is reflected as a 100% improvement/gain. Benchmarks were taken from the emulated reference versions (cards running at NV's reference clock speeds and configurations).

    Tomb Raider - 1080p - Ultimate
    GTX 560 ti - 39.7
    GTX 960 - 85.9
    Gain - 116.4%

    Hitman Absolution - 1080p - Ultra
    GTX 560 ti -29.7
    GTX 960 - 56.3
    Gain - 89.6%

    Battlefield 4 - 1080p - Ultra
    GTX 560 ti - 22.6
    GTX 960 - 48.6
    Gain - 115.0%

    Farcry 3 - 1080p - Ultra
    GTX 560 ti - 31.8
    GTX 960 - 81.8
    Gain - 157.2%

Metro Last Light - 1080p - Very High
    GTX 560 ti - 28.0
    GTX 960 - 53.3
    Gain - 90.4%

    Thief - 1080p - Very High
    GTX 560 ti -13.8
    GTX 960 - 47.5
    Gain - 244.2%

    Dirt 3 - 1080p - Ultra
    GTX 560 ti - 44.9
    GTX 960 - 100.5
    Gain - 123.8%

    Bioshock Infinite - 1080p - Ultra
    GTX 560 ti - 39.5
    GTX 960 - 75.9
    Gain - 92.2%

Average gain (equal weight) = 128.6%

Yea, it's a bit of an improvement :)

    Everyone already answered - YES

...but sure on the 980 ,  since  you can get 980's for fairly cheap now since the Ti versions & Titan X came out

960 would be the cheapest with the most increase for performance. 980 would set you for a long time but for 1080p and the likes, 960 would be good upgrade for the price. If you plan on going 2k/4k than 970/980.

    I noticed a huge increase going from a 660 Ti to a 970.

Not trying to hi-jack this thread, but since I was wondering almost the same thing or close to it, would I see much improvement if I was to get a GTX 950?
I have a GTX 560ti atm, but don't have more then $160 to spend on a new vid card, but at the same time I want the DX 12 support, but also a decent gain over the 560 in my current games.

I mean the 560ti lasted me this long and still plays what I play decently (sometimes I have to turn a few things down that I am not too worried about)  I try to squeeze as much as possible from vid cards before upgrading.

The GTX 950 is almost as fast as the 960, pretty much 10-15% slower for 10-15% less money. Both are about twice as fast as a 560ti.

I upgraded from 2 GTX550ti in sli to a single GTX970FTW+ using a 27" 1080p monitor can play everything on ultra now. Shell out the extra $ get a 970 well worth it. I was only getting 20-30fps on medium with witcher 3 with the sli'd gtx 550 now I am getting 60fps on ultra.
