I'm looking to purchase a new TV for the family room. I narrowed my selection down to two models of Samsung SUSHD 4K TV (UN55JS8500FXZA,UN55JS9000FXZA). The TV specs are the same, the difference is one is a curved screen. Is it worth the cost for the curve? Both TVs are amazing, just trying to justify the extra cost... thx.

Unless you can get a 70" or bigger screen and everyone is sitting directly in front of it, you are pretty much wasting your money on a gimmick.

I have a curved TV, but it doesn't work anymore it didn't originally come curved but the texas heat in a storage unit gave it a nice one.

I used to have a curved one, but frankly those old picture tube style TVs are pretty heavy and low res, I prefer my current flat screen. In all seriousness, I do not own one, and I checked one out at Bestbuy once and I think I would just go with a flat one personally.

Not an owner, but I recently bought a 2015 55Ju7100 after considering the curved ones (which like agent8 already stated, bigger sets benefit from this feature more it seems). If you frequent [H]ard|OCP at all, I believe Kyle Bennett (site creator) bought himself the JS9000 and has enjoyed it. Is it worth the extra $$... I've heard that the curved models get the better panels, but this is probably something you have to see for yourself in person ( if you haven't already). Sure hope you did your research well though. I could barely wrap my mind around the models that supported future HDR, local dimming, edge-lit/direct-lit, input lag,.....bleh. Edit: Forgot to add that the VA panels on these sets can have some bad viewing angles. Curved screens may help resolve this somewhat as well as cut down on glare. Although from personal experience so far when it comes to 4K, if you are sitting any more than 5 ft from a 55" (unless you have eagle eyes) you will hardly notice (if any) the difference between this and 1080p.

I Have this one: Samsung UN65JS9000FXZA and it is fantastic. Viewing angles are great. It upscales the cable box real well ( cable is supposed to be delivering 4k content in the near future ) but it really shines with Blu-Ray. The 3D part is the best I've ever seen and that's comparing it with IMAX 3D. Sports look great. Can't wait till NFL season kicks off. I have a 55" Sony flat panel too (bought in 2011) and the Samsung is quite a bit better. We do sit fairly close to it ( 7-8 ft) I have a 600 watt surround sound system. It's like IMAX at home. I don't regret buying at all ( 0% 24 month financing). You need to go to a store like Best Buy and look and see what you really like.

I would think the curve would make it very difficult for someone sitting on either side. They wouldn't be able to see the whole picture.

The curve is slight unless you're sitting at some extreme angle. My concern would be perceived image distortion along the curved area at an angle.

Thanks everyone for the input. I did see both TVs in the flesh, both have amazing pictures. In the end, the curve seemed like a want an not a need. I chose the UN55JS8500FXZA (flat screen).

Mine is a 100" Optoma but it only curves when my swamp cooler hits the screen really hard from down the hallway.

I have the 40JU6700 and I think it's great. Wouldn't go back to flat. However as mentioned above, at some really wide angles the view isn't great. A flat screen would do much better at those angles. So unless you'll have people at a wide offset, the curve should be fine. They look nice as well. 1080p scaling is excellent on these models and from 3+feet away it looks nearly as sharp as 4k.

Yeah and they do full 4:4:4 chroma in PC Mode or DVI PC Mode @ 3840x2160 @ 60hz. However, if you need low input lag, you can enable game mode which only does 4:2:2 chroma 3840x2160 @ 60hz but for games there's hardly a difference between the two so you can have low input lag and great image quality (Assuming you'd even hook up a PC to the tv).

As much as these 4k and curved sets look cool in the store, I don't think I could drop down to 65". I sometimes even wish I went 120" on my projector but I love it. Someday when they make a semi affordable 4K led projector, I will upgrade.

I see my fair share of these curved 4k panels as I install these and home theater systems daily. My personal option is this is just another gimmick by tv makers to get you to upgrade your current tv. It reminds me of old tube tvs and has the same issues that come with a large glossy curved screen. I do however like real 4k content it looks fantastic! but the lack of content makes me question why ppl are really buying them right now. The samsung 4k tvs I've mounted use a proprietary multi pin cable that breaks out into a block for multiple hdmi's. I always ziptie this to the bracket to take the weight off the connector and haven't had it malfunction or break yet, but it seems like it was almost designed to do so... I'm waiting for content before purchase. You're paying a premium for new tech you cant even properly use. 4k players are coming soon. I'm going to save money and wait to see if specs/standards change.
