I installed a Geforce 210 video card in my Dell Inspiron 530 (Intel Core2duo 3.0ghz with 4gb ram) today and started noticing problems with video playback.  In IE and Firefox I cannot play flash video files without the video being totally scrambled.  There are just green blocks dancing all over the video display area, with the occasional flash of the actual video every once in awhile.  Same if I try to play a .mov file on my local disk, or an .mpg file online.  However, if I go to YouTube I can play videos there just fine with their html5.0 player.  I've run the Windows 10 video troubleshooter and it did not find anything wrong.  I've powered down completely, checked for updated drivers for both windows and the geforce 210 but nothing helps.  There are no other issues and no error messages.  Any ideas?  Thanks.

I'm just grasping at straws here, but it sounds like you may have an issue with flash.  Do you have the latest version of flash installed?

Unfortunately, since Windows 8 Flash Player has been integrated into the system and cannot be upgraded manually.  It's weird that it also won't play .mov files from my iPhone or .mpegs from the web.  They all display the same way.  Doesn't matter if I use the Windows 10 movie player, windows medial player, or try to play them through IE or Firefox.

You're not using PrecisionX 16, are you?

Does the same thing occur on a clean install of windows?

I do have PrecisionX 16 installed, but did so only after the problem occurred and thought it might give me options to try and resolve it.  To the second question, this is the free upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7 so I don't have the disks to do a clean install..  I do have another almost identical machine but with an 8400gs instead of a 210, which has also followed the same upgrade path and it exhibits no issues.  I'm going to try and re-install the Nvidia driver tomorrow and maybe even try the DVI out instead of the VGA connector just to see.  I didn't have a DVI cable with me today and my monitor will go either way.  Thank you all for your help!

If you want to do a clean install of Windows 10 use this to get your actiavtion code first: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html
You can download the Windows 10 ISO from here and burn it to disk: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Thank you for the information and links.  That's great!  I have never done an upgrade before - always new installations because I didn't want any baggage left over from the old system.  This will help immensely!

Thank you all for your help and good advice.  I sat down at the computer this morning and rolled back the driver to a previous version.  Problem gone.  I didn't even realize that an updated driver had already been installed!  I just put the card in there yesterday morning.  Anyway, it appears there is an issue with the newest driver, at least on this particular card.  Again, thanks!

I find that very disturbing that Microsoft can change your drivers even after you tell it not to do that. I suspect you might have to reinstall the older driver on a daily basis after MS runs its automatic updates. I could be wrong though. You might want to just check the driver version tomorrow morning anyway.

Well, it turns out that I spoke too soon.  When I clicked to revert to old driver, the screen resolution remained the same, 1920x1080, which is the optimum for this monitor.  Videos at first glance appeared to play just fine.  But...  A few seconds into the video it starts to skip frames big-time and get's pretty herky-jerky.  Web pages were now loading painfully slow too.  In fact I rebooted the machine to see if things would improve.  Windows 10 then re-installed it's vanilla driver at a low screen resolution.  Tried the videos and they played perfectly.  Let Windows 10 re-install the Nvidia driver and I'm right back where I was yesterday with scrambled video.  I guess reverting to the old driver was actually going back to the Windows 10 basic driver instead of a previous version of Nvidia's driver, but curious how the video resolution did not change until a reboot.  Before doing a clean install of Windows 10 (or reverting back to Windows 7) I'm going to try a DVI cable just to see if it makes any difference.  Tried using a DVI to VGA adapter that I had on hand to see if the signal coming out of the card's DVI socket was any different.  It wasn't.  It's almost like the codecs are missing for mpg, mov and flash videos, but only with the Nvidia driver.

There have been complaints about memory leaks with video drivers and Windows 10. If your memory fills up it can cause a similar condition. Open your Task Manager when this happens and check your memory usage:

Here's the result.  At idle the machine is using 1.8 gb of the 4.0 gb installed.  When I run one the .mov files that's giving me trouble the memory usage only increases to 1.9 gb.  No peaks, just a mild shoulder up and then back down when the video is closed.

Your video board might be going bad on you. You can submit a support ticket to get the RMA process started.

Here is one of those "scratch your head" moments..  I downloaded VLC media player and installed it just for grins.  It works flawlessly with the .mov files that nothing else will play.  Downloaded an .mpg file and it played perfectly.  wmv., no problem.  This is weird.

sorry, was for an HP, there was a fix for a similar issue with a bios update. It does not appear that there is a Win10 bios update for your model though you may want to check and see if you have the latest installed:

If it works with VLC Media Player just leave it alone! LOL  It works, don't it?

Just to put a cap on this one, I solved the problem by buying another GT 210 on the cheap.  Problem gone.  Looks like the other card is going south.  Just wanted to let you know instead of leaving this issue out there unresolved.  Thank you again for all of your help!

That's one way to solve it but I thought you nailed it by using VLC. No warranty on that board?

I don't think there's any warranty on this card and I did buy it used.  VLC does work with standalone media files, but the problem is with videos that are embedded in web pages, etc. where it doesn't function.  I need that capability for the type of work that I do on this PC.   I didn't spend much for this MSI branded GT210 which looks brand new, and this was the best solution short of re-installing windows.  Everything works now and I got away from the issues that were arising out of using the on-board G33 video.  Machine seems to be nice and stable now!

MSI video boards seem to have a long lifespan. I have an old n450gts from 2010 that's still good for a spare if one of my main boards fails.
