MOBO:   evga x99 Classified
CPU:      5820k
RAM:     kingston HX426C15FBK4/32
GPU:      evga 06G-P4-4995-KR
SSD:     Samsung 850 EVO 500GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive

At the moment the board will reset in a loop with error code B7.

So I read somewhere that I need to update my older bios version on my new x99 classified using ram from the supported modules list before I can use the ram I bought originally (4x8gb kingston HX426C15FBK4/32).

I went ahead and ordered 4gb of BLS4G4D240FSA (crucial) since it's the cheapest and also lowest bios version I could find from the above list. now we wait.

My questions are:

A) Can anyone confirm that the kingston mem will work with the board after a bios update?
B) Will I be able to update the bios with just one dimm of ram (ie.: will it finally post).

First, you can still post with one stick of ram and everything else removed like the HDs, Multi-media drives, etc.

Second, is your Memory part of the MB compatibility list and what does error code B7 stand for?

Third, what BIOS version do you have installed?

Hi Jack and thanks for your response,

1. It won't post with my current ram so I can't even make it into the bios. (No screen comes up at all).
2. My memory ( sku:kingston HX426C15FBK4/32) is not in the list. Although, Another from kingston with the same timings is (kingston HX426C15FBK4/16). This is the 4gb dimms mine are 8gbs of the same series.
3. I can't tell you what bios I'm on atm since I never made it to a post.

I did get the board yesterday direct from EVGA as part of a stepup. I have to say I'm a bit less than impressed at the fact that a new mobo like this doesn't come with a non-ancient bios version and or a way to upgrade it without posting into the bios.

Thanks

Well, if its not on the compatibility list, than it won't work.  We just have to go by the list.  There are many folks who got some ram not on the list to work and others that didn't.  Hope the cheaper ram purchase is part of the compatible list.

Till than, let us know what happens.

If your RAM isn't on the compatibility list it just means that it hasn't been officially tested. My GSkill Ripjaw-X isn't on the compatibility list for my motherboard either and it works fine. Install just one stick of RAM and make sure your drives are set to AHCI in BIOS.

Hmm it maybe also Kingston curse. I had to deal with it many, many times with pretty much every X58 system I had in my hands. Solution - changed memory sticks to GEIL or Crucials and never looked back. Kingston makes good, solid, certified server grade memories, but in the desktop segment I think they lacking QC. And B7 code seems to indicate that there is an issue with slot or particular stick (most likely). Unfortunately Classy is a board with many issues... Very un-EVGA like when compared to e.g. offerings for X58, boards which always worked no matter what, and I had few direct lighting hits with boards in working order - I still have one.

Troubleshooting memory since X58 (famous dead slots with/or broken soldering on DIMM socket) release is pretty much the same and it was pointed out above. Remove everything and try one stick at a time. Of course board should post just fine with one stick.

Good news everyone,
Happy to report that after updating the bios to 1.18 (originally was on 1.12), by using a single stick of Crucial list-approved ram, the board now accepts my Kingston ram. Not happy that I had to go and buy 4gb of ram just for this... But eh.

New problem: the board will not detect my m.2 Samsung 850 evo ssd. Anyone succeeded in this? Would love to hear how. Tried ahci or not and enabled the m.2 ports in bios>advanced.
Ssd is at latest firmware, checked with Samsung magician.

Thanks everyone

Try installing the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver: http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/intel_rapid_storage_technology_driver.html
Download from 'Author's site'.

Wasn't hoping for much as I can't see the drive in the bios but I still gave it a try... no changes. I can see and use the drive in windows but not in bios and windows will not install to it (tried to do a clean windows install from a usb stick to it). So far, it seems destined to become a really expensive steam games drive. meh

Answer probably found here but you won't like it: http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2670127/asus-maxiumus-vii-hero-samsung-evo-850-ssd.html

"no, i've discovered that the issue is the 850 evo m.2 is a SATA m.2 which wont work in this particular ASUS m.2 slot.

it may work in one of the other slots but only function as a data drive, not a boot drive according to samsung who got back to me pretty swiftly."

I am told that there is a BIOS update that will make that M.2 drive bootable with the proper drive configuration.

Couldn't understand with what you're trying to say.

For M.2 PCI-E SSD to work, NOT SATA, you'll need a MB with said M.2 slot and compatible UEFI BIOS with the correct settings and last but not least, enough lanes should be considered.
