You can upgrade, but you will need a new motherboard and cpu. The 3770k (you listed yours without K, so I am guessing you haven't overclocked it, maybe?) would be the next step up, and overclocking will give you more headroom, but there isn't anything you could currently just hotswap on that motherboard due to it being 1155.

You could go ahead with skylake Z170 or the z97 and 4790k.

The only upgrade you can do without upgrading your motherboard too would be a 3770k. They are getting scarce but still available at some places just avoid eBay at all costs.

The Z97 chipset is a proven platform coupled with a 4790k Devil's Canyon CPU would be a good improvement with a 4.4 GHz boost clock from the factory. No need to overclock that CPU.

I wouldn't recommend it. I'd upgrade your GPU before moving platforms.

Agreed. You would be better served with a GPU upgrade.

Sounds like you just want to change things around. Ivy Bridge is still a strong platform... Performance increases per generation is very small. You could probably improve on what you currently have... What are your system specs?

An SSD will give you the most noticeable performance increase especially at boot and game loading times.

Honestly your CPU is fine, if you had say an 1156 or Phenom II id recomened it its hardly noticable going from a 2500k to the newest i7

1156 is still a damn strong platform considering I was fully capable of hammering my i5 760 to 4.2GHz on Air AND it was Stable to.

Got the proof to prove it.

Sure it's dated Now... but it was capable of TWICE its stock speeds...

I still have the board and the processor to. Only reason I upgraded was to take full advantage of SATA III 6.0GB/s and the modernization of the Z97 platform. Their is absolutely nothing wrong with it still when I swapped and upgraded.
