Hello everyone,

I'll be telling my most recent story but it's about another brand and I want to learn what's EVGA's take on that situation since it might effect my next purchase.

After a life long waiting for a gpu update I finally made up my mind and managed to buy a GTX 980, a Gigabyte G1. But unfortunately it has coil whine. Not very loud but loud enough to be audible, especially while getting high fps in games. Sometimes limiting fps via enabling vsync- works but not in every game. Plus I hate using vsync since it increases input lag noticably.

So I decided to contact my retailer (i'm in Turkey btw) and they told me that the gpu should go service center to get approved for a return or change. Then I called Gigabyte service center to get informed about the situation and they told me that they don't accept coil whine as a RMA. I'm a bit surprised since I heard lots of stories here and abroad from friends and other people with different brands accepting RMAs and even refunds.

I just want to find out the EVGA's policy here, since I'm sure some of you have some experience on EVGA gpus. Do Nvidia or any other brand really strictly deny coil whine as an issue worthwile for RMA? Because what I heard from people is telling me the opposite but I'm so confused and unhappy right now.

Here's my rig if it's anything to do with the situation:

msi z87 gd65
i7 4770k
2x8 gb 1866mhz ram corsair vengeance
750w evga supernova g2 psu
samsung 840 evo 120 gb + couple of mechanical hdds and windows 10

EVGA will RMA your card in most cases for coil whine after attempted troubleshooting such as running a benchmark for 20 hours straight (works out the coil whine or something).  I know I got my GTX 970 RMA'd on coil whine for free and all I tried was the benchmark troubleshooting.  I would point this out to be more of an EVGA policy over an NVIDIA policy.  (NVIDIA doesnt make the fans/board/vram)

Well I went through 10 EVGA 980 SC+ cards and 4 asus 980s before I gave up on coil whine. Both my 980TIs have it too.

I want to RMA but my cards run fine, don't crash and I really don't want to take the loop apart for weeks because EVGA will only send 1 card at a time via advanced RMA.

So looks like EVGA accept coil whine as a "defect" at least which is a good thing. I also called EVGA service center in Turkey and they said they will exchange or refund if the customer is not happy with their card with coil whine. This is completely opposite what I heard from Gigabyte Service Center... I have no idea how they became more popular than EVGA in Turkey.

I was actually leaning towards EVGA in the first place, but not having a backplate was kind of a step back for me...

The coil whine I'm experiencing is more audible than the one in your video by the way. I wouldn't consider a RMA for that too :p.  And hey, your rig looks great!

Coil whine can also be caused in conjunction with the power supply used.

If you have a spare power supply, or a friend that can test your card out in their computer, you may find that it is indeed your power supply causing the issue.

Wow dude we should maybe talk about common denominator here, and suggest that maybe the 980's and 980 ti aren't the problem.

My 2 970 ssc cards and my 980ti sc+ card have no inductor noise even using a 144hz monitor so they are being pushed... Maybe it is not the cards as has been said.

We can usually work out an advanced RMA if it's a new card, and you've run a few tests to see if it's actually the card. In the EU and APAC regions, we'll offer a cross-ship.

If your card's whining, check that it's not the PSU, try a different PSU if you have one, or put the card in a spare PC for a test. Running a loop of OCScannerX, Valley, or 3Dmark for 8-10 hours can reduce the whine on the card.

Also, try a different set of headphones or speakers, as sometimes a poor ground can make noise from the PCI/PCIe bus come through the sound card, or the amps on the card may be poorly shielded. You can try a USB sound card if this is happening.

For some reason the retailer didn't let me use 14 days return policy, even though I have the card for just 2 days. I RMA'd the card however, I'll see how it's end up this week. So unfortunately I cannot try another PSU atm.

I'm not sure if it's caused by my psu though. Doesn't EVGA Supernova G2s are actually based on Super Flower's Leadex platform which is the top PSU platform in the market at the moment, in terms of ripple suppression and one of the best among voltage regulation?

I'm leaning towards EVGA now (if I could ever get refund from Gigabyte), I called EVGA technical service here in Turkey and they told me that they would change or refund if the card has noticeable coil whine.  Wish EVGA cards have backplate though. :(

Yeah, Turkey is special since all of the exchanges need to go through Vektron.

It's probably not your PSU causing the whine, but it can happen, especially with some cheaper models.
