Hi everyone, yesterday when playing Ark I noticed that my GPU is getting very hot. I am running Windows 10, the latest Nvidia drivers 355.60. I did a clean install using DDU. I use EVGA precision 5.3.7 and double checked the temperature with HWINFO64. I am using Single GPU mode and optimal performance mode in the Nvidia controll panel, cause ARK does not support SLI, and I gain a few FPS doing so.

When running the game, it uses 99% of my GPU. And without using overclocked settings, the temperature gets up to 96 degrees celcius, with my slight overclock of 100Mhz on Gpu clock and Memory it gets to 98 degrees celcius. I am running the card in a big case, a Coolermaster Cosmos 2, I have alle the fanslots in use with high rpm fans, if I set them all to max it sounds like a jetplane taking off. Just a couple of weeks ago I cleaned out all the dust from all the vents, including the ones on the GTX 690 itself, and everything is in working order, so airflow should not be a problem. My room temperature is not that hot either, its around 25 degrees celcius. I have not retimmed my card, never openend it, only removed dust with pressured air. All the fans are working like they should.

At this moment I am gonna do a test with Unigine heaven, to see what the temperatures will be. But the question is, has anyone else experienced these kinds of temperatures with this card in ARK, and I am convinced it is running to hot now, could it be a hardware malfunction, either a sensor problem, or maybe one of the vapor chambers that is not working like it should?

Update, after running Unigine heaven, EVGA precision gave me the following stats: #1 GTX 690 running at 979 Mhz at a temp of 97 degrees celcius, #2 GTX 690 running at 1045 Mhz at a temp of 70 degrees celcius. I am running the heaven test at 1920x1080, DX11, quality high, Tessellation Normal, AA x4 full screen. There are no artifacts or crashes. But it seems to me that #1 GTX is running way to hot. The cards fan is at 100% 2800 rpm. I am gonna take the card out, see if I can spot anything weird.

2nd Update, I took out the card, checked it out, nothing seems broken, I took out any remaining dust, I have run Unigine Heaven again, and still the same problem, I have attached a screenshot with the outcome of the benchmark, in the top right corner you can see the temperatures of both GPU chips, with a difference of more then 20 degrees celcius. If anyone know a different way to test my GPU to confirm these stats, please let me know.

I have down clocked my GPU to -300Mhz on the GPU clock, and it still reaches a temperature of 94 degrees celcius in ARK, playing for less then 10 minutes. I attached a screenshot of the stats that EVGA precision displays ingame.

It might be time to tear down the 690 and re-apply some TIM to the heatsink. I would recommend using MX-4. If that doesn't help then apply for an RMA replacement.

Is this the only option? Cause I am not really sure I want to tear down my 690, I even have extended warranty till 2017 and I don't wanna mess up the card. I have some experience re-apply TIM to a CPU, but taking apart a GPU like a 690 is something very different.  Is this not a warranty thing to begin with? Cause I don't think we are expected to open up the GPU to begin with right?

I also tested the card with GTAV and it does not behave the same way as it does in ARK or Unigine Heaven. So I am really not sure what to think about this problem right now. Gonna try out some other games to be sure.

But to be clear, a load temp of 98 degrees with the fan going 100% and a temp difference of more then 20 degrees between the 2 chips is not a good thing right?

If you are not comfortable taking it apart & reapplying TIM to the gpu dies , then by all means you NEED to RMA  ASAP !!!
Those temps are not good .

Disassembling a video board to reapply TIM will not void the warranty. Just be careful not to break any screws. The thermal paste will dry out and be less effective over time. If you don't feel comfortable with this you can submit a support ticket requesting RMA replacement. I don't think EVGA has any GTX-690 boards available so they will probably upgrade you to a 900 series board. Other players have complained about higher GPU temps when playing ARK. It appears that the game is GPU intensive especially after the June update. You could try turning down some video settings. If the game doesn't support SLI then one GPU will run hotter than the other.

Thanks for all the replies, I have also checked the idle temperatures now, and my #1 GPU stays at 51 degrees at 100% / 2790rpm fan speed at 731Mhz Clock, my #2 GPU is at 34 degrees at 324 Mhz Clock, with no overclock applied. I also tried to reproduce the problem with another game, a game that does not support SLI, and where only GPU 1 is used, like in ARK. I booted up Anno 1404, and it showed 99% GPU usage one #1 GPU and a temperature of 95 degrees, so the same situation as in ARK. I will try Total war Shogun 2, cause I know that game uses SLI and showed hight GPU usage, and see what the difference between the 2 GPU is in temperature. And yeah I think I am gonna contact support about this and see if RMA is an option. Thanks for all the replies everyone, if you have any more suggestions then keep them comming, I will keep checking this post ;)

51°C at idle is no good at all. While searching for similar problems with the GTX-690 I came accross an owner that had the vapor chamber leak causing one GPU to run really hot. If this is the case then reapplying TIM would not help. If EVGA upgrades you to a GTX-980 that would give you similar performance to a GTX-690 as seen here comparing my GTX-680 SLI to a single GTX-980:

So I ran a test using Total War Shogun 2, all settings maxed out, and it almost uses 99% of both GPU in SLI and the difference between the temperatures is #1 GPU 99% usage at 97 degrees and #2 GPU 97% usage at 71 degrees. So I will be contacting support about this problem and see what they have to say. Would be sad if I had to exchange this card for a GTX 980 to be honest, but we will see ;) thanks for all the replies all :)

A GTX-980 would be a nice upgrade and give you 4 GB of VRAM too. Whatever EVGA decides to give you is totally up to them. They might offer a GTX-970 4GB board but I personally think the GTX-980 is a better match performance wise.

I have a 690 running in multi gpu and run ARK no problems. Assume you have added Ark to Nvida Control Panel / Manage 3d settings, program settings. Runs like a dream

What settings are you using in the Nvidia Control Panel, cause I am running the game as is.

Evga has replaced my GTX 690 with another GTX 690, the card is now running at around 70 degrees celcius when playing ARK, so my previous card was really faulty. I am glad this has been solved, now I am looking forward to the DX12 patch for ARK :D

That's really good news. I fear that the dual GPU video board is on the endangered species list. I'm glad you got another one. Some day that 690 will fetch a pretty penny should you ever decide to part with it.
