Hi,

I've got two 980 ti Classifieds in a Z170 Classified motherboard.  Unfortunately, I have no means of supplying juice to the supplemental 6-pin PCI-E power input.  I plan on overclocking the cards reasonably 1400mhz to 1500mhz somewhere around there or whatever is stable enough for the cards.  I just have the two cards in the PCI-E slots and nothing else.  Am I at risk of setting my computer ablaze by not using the supplemental power input in this instance?

Thanks for any input. (so to speak.)

    Hi welcome on forum.
I suppose you have very nice setup with Z170 Classy + 980Ti Classy.
    Real gaming RIG.

You can use molex to 6 pin adapter and to connect to additional PCI-E connector.
Probably you have and nice power supply.

You can use that adapter but I think in the EVGA manual they used to say that it is not idea to do so.  Also what power supply/cpu/ssds/hdds do you have?

Heatware: Trelor - I primarily use eBay which is attached to my heatware.

No, you aren't. The supplemental 6 pin is for 3 or 4 cards. 2 will not bother it. You will not go nuclear and meltdown.

Why not if EVGA give with their graphic cards (8+6 pin) one very nice full black 2 molex to 6pin PCI-E adapter.
I like their adapters because they are made to cable management look better. It's not usual cheapest adapter available.

I have an HX1200i PSU there are no molex outputs on it. More importantly I haven't any of the 8-pin outputs available because I have discrete one-to-one cables powering my GPUs. (no pigtails types) and am using both the EPS12V inputs on the mobo so that eliminates the other two outputs on the PSU. (They are a total of six 8-pin outputs).  There are six 6-pin outputs but I can't use those to power the supplemental PCI-E input (there is only ONE lead in those connectors that's 12V, so no bueno.)  I have 6700k on a Corsair 110i GT cooler that I plan to overclock as much as stability will allow and am using two Samsung 850 EVO ssds (not in RAID) and that's it, nothing else occupying the PCI-E slots other than the graphics cards.

Which leads me to further inquiring, since I have no intentions using LN2 to cool my CPU for extreme record breaking overclocks, would the extra EPS12V be of no real use to me? If so then I could use the output that occupies to power the supplemental PCI-E power input instead.

What do you guys think about this?

    Thanks.

You don't need 2 8 pin cpu plugs installed. You only need 1. The second is for when running crazy high voltage, which you aren't.

Again, you do not need the extra PCIe 6 pin supplemental power either, as that is for 3 or 4 gpus, which you are not using.

Ah cheers mate, just what I wanted to hear and I figured as much. I've read some of your other posts and you seem like a pretty cluey guy so I'll definitely take your word for it.

Anyway thanks to all you guys who chimed in and happy computering.  I'll post some benchmarks and numbers sometime when I've got everything sorted out.

    Later.

if you were to run 4 way sli ..would it be dangerous to put in a second PSU instead of getting the adapter thingy?

edit: I'm dumb, you'd have to buy one if these to handle both psu's starting up at the same time http://www.add2psu.com/

I run 2 PSU's on my main rig. I ran a wire from ground and the psu on signal wires to the second power supply. No fancy tools needed, just a few minutes and the correct wires.
