Another project on the horizon.  However I will keep that under wraps until I have something to show.  What I do have to show is this:

What is that you say?  That is the earlier Damascus billet drawn out to about the width of a large thumb, and just under a foot long.  Lots of layers.  Went from 19, to 38 (pictured)  and will be 114 by tonight when I triple stack it.

It consists of TOOL STEEL, and a high nickle content steel which is used as bandsaw blades.  It is a VERY sturdy chunk of steel.

Jesus Christ Nate!!!  That is just awesome!!!  I only wish I had that kind of knowledge and skill.  Great work!

thanks!

... But you would be surprised what you can do when you put your mind to it.  We both have the same 2 hands.  No reason anyone else reading this can't do it.

I sure hope your keeping those clean and flat before each forge welding or your going to end up with weak welds and contaminated steel.

I always try.  This is still very new to me, so I am learning things as I go.

Trying a different approach.  More pics to come shortly.

A scrap steel rod with the Damascus billet welded to it.  I have never been known for my forging prowess... but I have been known to machine something worthwhile on occasion, so I am trying the machine approach.  Been working on this particular billet for over a month.

If you look carefully at the face, you can kind of see some of the wiggles in the steel that is the different layers.

Its interesting to play with once you get a small idea on how to make patterns in the Damascus.  I have some other billets i am working on that i will share as they get closer to being finished.

Re: One ring to rule them all; My adventure into FORGING! (bandwidth warning) 2015/11/23 11:19:29 (permalink)
UPDATE:

I introduced forced air into the unit.  Its nothing more then a furnace draft blower motor.  I wired it on a fan controller (not one with 3 speeds but variable).

What it now allows me to do is use only 5 psi worth of propane to get temps around 2000°F vs pouring the propane on around 30psi and going through cans like crazy.  Also I left an empty spot to tap into if I want to run things like pure oxygen into the mix to do some really stupid things ;)

Also, I built a structure around it:

The hood catches all the heat and dissipates it evenly instead of singeing the top of my garage door.  I put a hole in the back so I can run some dryer duct if I want to have the heat go someplace else.  Winter is coming you know... why waste perfectly good pure clean heat?  Also a rail system to put long sections into the forge.

oh yea.. and that little box below the hood is the pyrometer.  Tells me the actual temps now.  LOVE that thing, super handy!

Quite a set-up Nateman! I was freaking out a bit ,when I seen the PVC connected to the iron pipe.... Until I looked a bit further. Do the bolts/spikes on the inlet tube serve a purpose? [top of the forge]

Re: One ring to rule them all; My adventure into FORGING! (bandwidth warning) 2015/11/23 12:00:05 (permalink)
That is nothing but air blowing into it.  I kept it steel pipe right close to the forge for heat reasons, but the pipe stays cool to the touch when the forge is operating.  when I turn it off thats when the pipe gets hot to the touch, but it doesnt really travel to the PVC where it would melt it.  It just gets warm.  What bolt spikes are you referring to?

A close up of the Pyrometer shows the hole in the back of the hood where I can direct any heat if I so desire.

EDIT:
oh I see what you mean... those bolts keep the burner in place centered in forge.

DBL EDIT:
whoops.... its actually the "nailed upgrade".  I crafted it into my war forge... so when I use my forge as a melee weapon the upgraded bolts deal more damage, like from a bat into a spiked bat ;)
