I got two used GTX Titan Hydro Copper for a compute project and installed them in my system. I noticed that there are differences in their performance so I checked them with PrecisionX 16. It shows the following under load (double precision enabled):

           Core Voltage   Core Clock
card 1: 1.062V           849MHz
card 2: 1.162V           967MHz

I believe the numbers of card 1 are the factory settings and card 2 has somehow been reconfigured.
The problem is that card 2 permanently runs into the voltage limitation and its throughput is only about 30% of card 1. In PrecisionX I can lower the core clock but that doesn't help anything. I would like to lower the core voltage of card 2 but PrecisionX (or MSI Afterburner for that matter) only gives me the option to raise it, not lower it.

Is there any way to get card 2 back to factory specs? I tried copying the BIOS from card 1 to card 2 but that didn't change anything (or maybe I didn't do it right).

Appreciate any input

the only option you have is a BIOS modified.

Contact support ? I think the hydro copper of the first gen titan should run at 928mhz, looks like something is off on both cards. What is the core clocks with no extra software running besides gpu z for example ? (precision and afterburner off).

Verify the part numbers with a GPU-Z Validation and post both results here. This will help verify what they should be running at.

Contact evga tech support and request for them to send you the latest vbios for your card to your e-mail. Update both cards by reading the instructions that evga provide with the vbios sent to your e-mail. Done.

the only option you have is a BIOS modified.

FWIW, I downloaded a utility called 'Maxwell II Bios Tweaker' to take a look at the two original BIOSes and it shows all the settings are exactly the same for both cards. I expected to see some differences there, weird. OTOH, I don't know enough about this tool so this might not really mean anything.

When idle, the clocks and voltages are similar. The core clocks are at 324MHz, voltages are at 0.862V and 0.887V.

From your responses it sounds like there's something strange going on so I will contact tech support and hopefully they can point me in the right direction.

You can't post link, so break it up. If there is a period box it off like this [.] and repost the validation links. Sorry, I forgot to mention that earlier.

Not uncommon at all for two different cards of the same type to run differently.  Each card may idle at slightly different voltages/clocks and will adjust voltages as needed to allow "maximum" boost.  That is part of boost 2.0

All my cards run at the same exact speed. Original titans are also gpu boost 1.0.

Yes, if sync is disable inside precision the cards will boost differently. On a completely stock system you won't have precision installed & the gpu's will run at the same speeds. On a default install of precision the sync option is enabled by default.

Yes I understand that.  He said he checked with Precisionx.  So if he did not check the "sync" box they can boost differently right?  So Titan is 2.0 correct?  I remembered checking the sync box.  Been a long time since I installed Px.  Have not messed with the newer versions myself.

The sync box would have to be unchecked for them to boost differently. Yep, titan is 2.0.

Would not hurt for the OP to check and see if the box is unchecked.  If it is, then they are performing as they should.  One card may still need more voltage than the other to reach the higher clocks even in sync mode correct?

Yes, currently sync is disabled, Let me check what happens when I enable it

Voltages can vary sync'd or not.

They may or may not run at the same boost speeds. Without Precision, or Afterburner for that matter installed, the GPU's will boost independent of each other. One of my TITAN SC boosts to 1045mhz, the other to 1032mhz. So they run at the same boost of 1045mhz, I added +13mv to the GPU running at 1032mhz.

Thanks, good to hear ;-)
Also, it's encouraging to hear that cards can boost slightly differently and it doesn't necessary mean that the card is broken.

It's just that on this card performance tanks really bad. On the 'good' card a workload takes about 2.5 days to finish (which is normal from what others say) but on the slow one it's about 6 to 7 days.

The slow card starts off at regular speed (~850MHz, 1.062V, limit:Power) just like the other card for about 30 seconds. Then it raises clock and voltage to about 970MHz, 1.162V and is now limited by VRel and it just stays like that. GPU load is still at ~95% but Memory Controller load is now at only 30-40% instead of 90% so throughput suffers a lot.
Temp on the fast card is 42 to 45C, on the slow one about 38.
At first I suspected overheating of a voltage regulator and checked the water block for good contact with components but everything looked fine.

Maybe I can use the BIOS tweaking tools to convince this card to not try and boost itself higher than it can handle :-)

They should be relatively the same on work loads...similar to the percentage difference in clock speeds.  A huge difference like that is probably some sort of software/configuration issue.  What program are you running? If you're not getting errors, the boost isn't the issue. Also you can set the GPU to throttle using Precision or Afterburner. Just reduce the power target.

Re: How to reset GTX Titan to factory defaults? 2015/08/24 22:25:09 (permalink)
Just circling back on this issue. I did try to lower the power target and that brought some improvements but the card still wasn't on the same level. I then swapped it out for a different card and that one is now running great, exactly as the other one.
I will send the slow card to EVGA since it's still under warranty.

Thanks again for all your helpful tips!
