I did look at my event viewer and did see that just before or around the last time my pc froze it was the event ID 4101 (Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered.)

Try downloading Precision X or MSI Afterburner and downclocking the core and memory of both cards by 100mhz and then playing.  If the problem doesn't occur for a few days with that then try to figure out an RMA for an unstable clock.  Otherwise you might just be out of luck until the next driver comes for Windows 10 with a fix (maybe).

Someone else may know how to fix it though.

If I lower the core clock and memory clock by 100 and it works fine, doesnt that mean the cards are faulty?

Getting the non-ACX version, hope I won't have these problems!

Single card runs fine but SLI is where im having the issue. I dont understand why, if its hardware or software. Maybe i need a bigger power supply? I have no clue.

860W is pretty big, but you could download an application like Speed Fan or CPU-Z(maybe has) to evaluate your 12V+ voltage. To do this set the GPU to 100% load using Valley or another benchmark and make sure that the voltage of the 12V+ stays relatively constant (+-2). Reason being is that if it's not constant it can cause the GPU to become unstable and cause issues. The other voltages shouldn't me scarily remain stable FYI.

I forgot to mention that I did get the error again where my display drivers stopped working. Event ID 4101. This time the PC did not freeze just the usual grey/black screen for 3-5 seconds then recovers.

If you are using Precision X try closing the program each time your PC starts and see if the issue goes away. If it does then that could be the issue and using MSI Afterburner is an option.

My thinking is that maybe the first problem was fixed with Win 10 and then you updated Precision X and the update can cause stability issues for some.

If this doesn't work then I think an RMA would be safe. To do that it would be easiest to call EVGA at 888-881-3842 ex 1 and quickly go through troubling shooting with them. Then after that try to get an EAR RMA, make sure it's an EAR so you can get free shipping. But as a side note you will need to put 'collateral'/credit card because they will ship a card to you first. During this they will charge your card $1 and refund it and if you fail to ship the defective card back then they charge it. You will also need the original proof of purchase or invoice and upload it to your EVGA account. Ignore what's said under the EAR RMA page online as its not completely true.

I see, I have already RMA'd 1 card, what is the chance that the other is really causing the issue... Cause like i said its only in SLI.

Re: GTX 980 SC ACX 2.0 grey/black screen in SLI thoughts... 2015/08/03 21:05:40 (permalink)
Steps:
1) So you need to upload your invoice and instructions are here: http://forums.evga.com/m/tm.aspx?m=162&p=1
2) Call EVGA tech support at 888-881-3842 ex 1
3) Give them your serial number
4) Tell them you need an EAR RMA
5) Go Through Tech support and tell them what you have done
6) They at this point will request an RMA on your behalf which is nice because it will get approved. Also this checks off going through tech support online instead which is a bigger hassle.
7) Wait 24 hours for an email saying your RMA has been approved
8). Login at EVGA.com and go here to give your credit card as collateral. This may or may not charge your card the full retail amount until the card defective card is received and processed by EVGA. I know it didn't for me the three time I have done it.
9) Wait 9 days or less for your card to arrive
10) Send back defective card in the same box with the new label provided at your local UPS store within 14 days to avoid being charged the full retail price.

The call will take under an hour.

If you have anymore questions I can try to help.

If this doesn't fix the issue then you haven't really lost anything, but I just can't imagine what else to do and am hopeful this will fix it for you.

Yes, one or both could be faulty.

Very likely. I just went through a sli problem myself on my current rig, one of the cards in my rig was causing me to crashing inside unigine heaven 4.0 when 4-way sli was enabled.

I refuse to believe it's hardware related now after reading through this thread I found:

If it is a driver issue it must be linked to the 980's as I have no issues with my system.

I finally caved and decided to try down clocking the core clock and mem clock down 50 mhz and there were no display driver crashes. Hardware or software I still cant tell..

If down clocking solved the crashes then it's a hardware issue nearly 100% of the time.  Looks like you might have RMA'd the wrong card or less likely there was an issue with both cards. Not unheard of with factory overclocked cards.

Yes, downclocking fixed the grey/black screen issue, which i think when im seeing the grey/black screen its just the display drivers crashing then recovering.

If I RMA the other card as well and its still having the issue then what might we be looking at as the cause, motherboard or software? Thats all I can think of at this point.

If you get the same issue when you get your card back from rma and downclocking fixes it again it's the card again.

Then how can both cards run fine with no issues on their own? It doesnt make sense to me. If its a card issue should it still have the issue even while running solo?

If the cards run fine on their own it's clearly a problem with the sli circuitry on one or both of the cards since you said it only happens in sli. No, it shouldn't have the same problem when running solo as sli is disabled.

Decided against RMAing the graphics card, I found an old system in my garage and did a little more testing. I found that my 12V rails power was actually fluctuating quite a bit and after talking to EVGA support for the 1 billionth time he thought it was worth swapping out since it was changing too often and too much, I swapped out the PSU and so far no issues. Going to be RMAing the PSU at first chance.

Thank you, I'm hoping no more issues. As usual I will report back once my new PSU arrives.
