Hahahaha. I can't see how they manage.
I don't mean to sound like an Nvidia fanboy, but that's hysterical. All that mass production on the latest r9 series, I think it actually hurt them. That, or they thought they could make some kind of dent with the sales of Xbox and PS4 to help support the production of these cards. I think that tanked. Just look at the sales from When Nvidia produced the chip for the PS3. It was ok, not great. That's "one of the reasons" that Nvidia said "no" to Xbox One and PS4. I'm only theorizing on why AMD is laying people off.

I always hate to see that, because think what you want about the company, that's peoples livelihood, and that's not good.  Also for years I used AMD because they were as fast or faster than Intel but way cheaper..... pendulum swings to Intel..... and never swang back.  Even when I had some major cash flow problems so upgrading was out of the question, I loved seeing AMD and Intel duking it out, both sold a lot neither were in danger, it just pushed the industry.  Hope those that got laid off can find work soon, that's rough.

I don't like to see anyone loose a job, and on top of poor management just puts fire in your belly.

I think it was the K6 that gave the Pentium the better fight?

Why we can't get good management at AMD is beyond me, but maybe most can't handle inheriting its predecessor messes....

pendulum swung to intel because they paid people to not use AMD. Intel did get sued for that but the damage was done. AMD hasn't been competitive since the Athlon X2 and that was over 10 years ago.

Intel bribed OEM companies at the time and eventually got caught and fined. While on the OEM stage AMD wasn't doing that great because of this, on the consumer side they we're gaining traction big time. Athlon XP did great, Athlon 64 was superb, whipping the floor with Intel P4 offerings, X2 was also good. Then Intel released C2D and going AMD suddenly made no sense in lots of areas. No matter how lenient I am with AMD they just aren't competitive in almost a decade. They have decent offerings in some segments, but decent doesn't give you marketshare and big profits. The amount of debt and how fast it's growing up is staggering.

We'll see how Zen does (just in time for my scheduled upgrade, if all goes well), but I'm not holding my breath.

AMD could try and branch and establish other connections to other companies since they develop processor chips. I'm sure they are already in other areas to keep operations running and business flowing. It can't just be us, the consumers, where we are their main source of revenue.
However with an article clearly showing they are preparing for another round of layoffs, it can't be good. Business is probably not to scale.

    AMD's Outlook

AMD's graphics division has demonstrated its ability to compete at the top of the market. Its Radeon HD 4000-series cards offered better price/performance than Nvidia's GeForce GTX (GT200) line-up, and the Radeon HD 5000-series remains the uncontested DirectX 11 champion.

AMD's CPU division has also demonstrated an ability to design high-performance multi-core CPUs, starting from the Athlon 64 X2 to today's current six-core server-oriented Opterons. Throughout the last decade, AMD and ATI have both been either a performance leader or in a close second place. As they enter the next ten years, AMD is the only technology company with the technical resources and consistent track record in both CPU and GPU technology. When AMD talks about Fusion, one cannot help but to believe that the company can succeed. We have high expectations for AMD in the upcoming decade.

AMD really needs to merge with a "gorilla" who is going to make them competitive.  Rumors about Samsung might have done that.

MSI MAG X570 Tomahawk;  Ryzen 9 5950X; Asus TUF RTX 4070 TI OC; Corsair H115i Pro; 32 GB  Crucial Ballistix Elite DDR4-3600; Western Digital Black 4 TB SN850X NVMe; Creative SoundBlaster Z; Corsair HX 850i;  Lian Li Lancool II;  EVGA Z15
