I have always purchased OEM in the past, simply because its cheaper, I don't use 32 bit, and I don't use or would even try to use Microsoft support...and those are the only differences between OEM and retail. Same as in the past. ??? So why not? Except its free now, unless your not using Win 7 or 8
But, I don't know why anybody would buy it other than that?

Edit: except to upgrade from home to pro?

Retail can be moved to another system legally (if you buy a new motherboard). OEM cannot.

You can buy either, regardless of OS you're on. It's not limited to previous OS. Yes, OEM is cheaper than retail.

I'm also ok with the basic sound card drivers, they work fine for now.

Retail can be moved to another system (if you buy a new motherboard). OEM cannot.

That was said about 7 also, but I have moved several oem's several times, and only had to use the phone to activate them twice, and that was easy. I have moved hard drives from one computer to a completely different one and a had them activate immediately. And from what I have read, however I have not read all of it. The "moving" thing may apply to retail also, if not now. At a later date. MS can change the rules anytime they want with new "revisions" as they are calling them now But, I guess if someone had Win 7 or 8 home, they may also want to buy the Pro oem instead of get a free copy of Home? I guess...

Re: Windows 10 Upgrade Begins Rolling Out in Waves 2015/08/01 19:50:15 (permalink)
and now that I think of it, the OEM Home version of 7 that we upgraded two days ago had been on 2 different computers at an earlier date. And we had no problems "updating" to 10?
But , like I said, I have not read all of it, but I have read the descriptions on Newegg for the different versions. Same as Win 7 was

Edit: Now the moving thing, "from what I have read" does apply to the free version...
So if you move your free version that you updated from a retail version of 7 to 10(free) it would also apply.
Whether OEM or Retail. But I think it will take time to find out more about this, as I said, this was all said about WIN7 OEM's as well as XP versions. But I am sure there are other past OEM users here that will tell you the same.
Edit: and if you change your motherboard and or cpu, whether it died or you upgrade it, is it not still the same "legal" computer? no? hence the reason for the phone call. Your not Lying when it asks you how many computers it is installed on and you select 1

Had to upgrade several customers computers at work today with it.
One of my co workers is too.... erm.. inept  to know how to do it properly.

Several errors and hours later they are all done, had to force the update on most of them though.
Seems very poorly thought out by Microsoft, also had several people bring their computers in with the NVidia issues and had to fix those.

Are you finding more problems with W7 upgrades? My 8.1 went smooth as silk. Of course I just accepted the Nvidia driver for now.

So far ive had to do it with 7, 8 and 8.1

I have more success if I run most of the updates for the OS
then go to https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
and use the upgrade tool, run it from the PC for the PC its own.

8 has been the buggiest, 7 and 8.1 flawlessly (7 having way more update though).

I have more complaints about my customers.
They see "Free" from Microsoft, and think that they shouldn't have to pay $30 labor for us to update it for them.

Changing the motherboard is considered a major change/upgrade so Microsoft would prefer you buy another license if you had OEM. However, it will still work if you make the phone call, or at least it has worked fine in the past. I'm not sure if they've 'upped their game' discouraging that with Windows 10.

I for one, as I have stated previously in this and other threads. Are still unsure if I will ever give up my Win7Ult (oem) to "update to this free version" I would rather buy another, but I do have 2 other unused Win7 Pro copies that are not being used (but previously were, and I still have the boards/cpus. I am not even sure if they will update because they were not installed on any computers on the 29th.(again, will have to wait and see})I will however be installing the Win10 Ent 90 Evaluation I was offered and will run it on a hot swappable drive for a few months until this fiasco of driver problems hopefully gets sorted out by then.

to be honest, I have not actually built a new computer in over 7 years for myself. I only upgrade part by part, I mean really, who has the money to build a whole system all at once? Not me. And what would you do with the old one?

I have built them for clients, but they always get a new OEM, unless they choose otherwise.. And I do provide support per the license agreement.

Thanks for the info. I think I'll just go ahead, and update to Win 10. When I upgrade my computer next time, I will just buy Win 10 at that time. Good to know Nazca that the sound drivers are working, and the card is working like it's supposed to. I wouldn't want anything less.        =)

Re: Windows 10 Upgrade Begins Rolling Out in Waves 2015/08/01 22:31:58 (permalink)
Hey guys, found this tonight and thought it will help clear things up a bit. I was wrong on a few items above concerning Win10 retail and retail upgrades. yes I am a man and will admit it, I WAS WRONG! <- that was tough although I was going by what was read before the 28th, this was posted the 29th, but may also be somewhere else, there is a lot to read, and I dont think any single person has read it all!
According to "Andre" the motherboard (only)and not the cpu will be the "key" for upgrade of the oem version for Win10. Including the free version upgrade. But not for retail version upgrades. If you currently have a retail version of 7 or 8 now and you upgrade now or have already upgraded it, you can upgrade anything on your pc you want, FOREVER! (will have to see) as your retail license will be "absorbed" as he puts it, by the free version and carry all its existing rights (so X-man, if you have a retail version now, you will not have to buy a new version when you upgrade, anything, even the motherboard, if you want to upgrade to 10 now.) It looks like my best bet is to wait until I get my new board running, install 7 (1 of my oem) reactivate it if I can and then update it to Win10 if/when I decide to. Or, as I had planned, just buy another (retail version "this time"). But, as I said previously, (same as they had said about previous oem versions) And keep my Win7Ult as is. And use it for 5 more years on another unit. Hope this helps, you can read the whole article below, so X-man, looks like your all good! if you have a retail now? This was dated the 29th , of coarse I last searched these pages on the 27th!

Yes I have the retail version (Not OEM) of Win 7 Ultra. Makes me happy to see I wouldn't have to pay when I upgrade my comp either later this year, or early next year.

You probably wouldn't have to pay for it if you upgrade to another motherboard either. Do you want to be guinea pig? :D

I'm also giving the Start Menu another chance. I didn't give it a chance at all when I first installed 10. Plus, with Classic Shell, there's no way to access the tiles that originally appear on the right.  The Search bar is handy too as it acts like Windows 7, etc.  So, I'm sticking with the original Windows configuration and I do like it.

I think I got another Home 7 laying around some where I will probably not need, so I may do just that, after a few months just to check the policy

Did the install and had a great time playing with the updates/changes.
Overall game performance increase, no problems with any drivers.

New AMD drivers are rock solid too.

I think I might even get a windows phone when they roll out 10 on the cells and xbox.

Don't forget -

When you're happy with the Upgrade and figure you won't be downgrading to your previous Windows installation, you can perform a Disk Cleanup, selecting the Clean Up System Files button and get rid of the installation files. I'd put a checkmark in all of the boxes and unless you hibernate your computer, leave that one unchecked. It will also remove the Windows.old directory (your previous Windows installation). They may consume several gigabytes so it'll be good to free up that space, especially if you're on a lower capacity SSD.

In the root of your OS drive, it will put two hidden folders: $Windows.~WS and $Windows.~BT

$Windows.~BT will get removed during the Disk Cleanup.  Microsoft recommends keeping the $Windows.~WS for the time being as per a Twitter post response to a user.

So far so good on my end. I was advised by Ford Motor Company not to update because they hadn't tested everything with their systems and programs. But I said screw it and did it anyway. I've only had Windows 8 for about 2 weeks, but first impressions of 10 are that I like it sooooooo much better.

Do you work for/at AP06A (Kansas City Plant) or CE4BH (CEVA) ?

I work for a carrier who reports to the Ford Chicago Assembly (AP03A) on all routes which we run and handle for CAP, and we're the house carrier for the entire Ford Motor Company. So was just curious to know which one you worked at.
It's nice to see someone who works for my customer also take an interest in Computer/gaming. Game on
