So for weeks now I been dealing with VLC crashing during video playback or even while paused.  I couldn't figure it out.  I spent days reinstalling, using different versions even reinstalling windows.  I tried windows media player, different codec packs and other lesser known video players I found suggested online.  Nothing fixed it.

Suddenly it just dawned on me this evening that the only recent software I started using I never used before was Precision X.  I went ahead and closed Precision X and now none of my media players crash at all.

A google search revealed other's complaining of the same issue but they are a bit old.  How is this not a big issue affecting everyone else and being fixed?  Considering I used Windows 8.1, Windows 7 and Windows 10 complete clean installed and this occurs the second Precision X is running, I don't see how this isn't happening to everyone.

I have same problem too but not just media players, the Win 10 OS UI too glitches for me to while playing media player.

My screen flashes and some of my icons are cut in half, once I close the Precision everything is good.

I only turn on the Precision when I game cause I need the fan control to kick in higher then what the GTX 770 default speed fan are set.

Same here...just figured out it was Precision X causing the issue. I reinstalled video drivers and was about to do a complete wipe/reload (that would have sucked). Initially thought it was my 970 GTX card and maybe my install of mega codec pack. But I tried going to older codec pack versions that worked on another machine (win 7) just fine (i'm also on win 7 now), and then tried VLC and tried media player and it they all crap out. No error, no warning, just a few minutes into playback they stop repainting and/or just crash without error.

FYI, If you drop to version 5.3.5 then that may work for you - I've tested it on my system and it works...don't upgrade to 5.3.6.

I have the same issue, and I can confirm that latest EVGA Precision is causing the crash. Already did a clean install of Windows 10 / Video drivers / codecs / new players etc but it did not help.
Note that after uninstalling the application no further crashes appeared. EVGA team can you please take a look and see what can be done?

Same issues here. No matter Windows 8.1 or Windows 10. OSD, GDI Elements are bugged and hanging. Just upgraded to Precision with new Frametime and FPS Server running in Background. Older Version without this Services, no Problems at all. I reinstalled Windows 4 times until i recognized Precision-X was the Problem. Thanks EVGA, u made me happy this WE.

    Here is a temporary fix:

    "
    - Click "OSD" to temporarily turn it on
    - Find the new "Server" icon in your system tray, and double click it to open it
    - Use the "Add" button, to add all of your game/application executables to this "OSD Exclusion list"
    - Click OK to close the "Server" window
    - Click "OSD" to turn it back off again
    - Exit Precision X, and then re-open it
    - Test to see if your game/application works now without OSD making it misbehave
    "

I'm currently not using PrecisionX on Windows 10 to protect the hardware. I see all sorts of problems that are not present when the program is not loaded. Things like crashing media player and a huge leak in graphics card memory. Also setting a new GPU and memory speed does not have any effect.

Re: Precision X causing all media players to crash. 2015/09/09 22:19:01 (permalink)
Yeah Precision X (even newest version) causes problems for me in Windows 7 64-bit... When playing a video file, the picture in video player window gets white bars on the top and bottom of it. Going to or from fullscreen causes the picture to disappear. Also EA Origin's in-game overlay doesn't work if Precision X is running (though Steam's overlay is unaffected). Also problems with video streaming from YouTube and Netflix (as well as others), unless you disable hardware acceleration. The craziest part about all this is, THE OVERLAY IS DISABLED in Precision X, so I don't understand why there's still problems. I even did a fresh install of Windows recently, still had the same problems with Precision X.

Uninstalled Precision X and installed MSI Afterburner, have confirmed zero problems with Afterburner. Without a utility like EVGA Precision X or MSI afterburner, the fan stays at a constant speed and could overheat under load, so it's necessary to have one. Sorry EVGA but until you fix your software, I'll be using MSI Afterburner. BTW why did Precision X become so bloated and the options become so cumbersome to navigate through? It was perfect before, which MSI Afterburner is very much like the original EVGA Precision (before the "X"). Please improve your software.

EVGA Precision X 4.2.1 was coded by unwinder the creator of msi afterburner, 4.2.1 was also the very last version coded by him, after 4.2.1 someone at evga took over. EVGA Precision X 16 is coded by someone at EVGA.

I love EVGA products, I hope they can fix Precision X and make it better.

*edit* Also when the video player bug occurs with Precision X, it makes my taskbar appear glitchy if the player window is on or near it... Icons either partially or completely disappear. Even after closing the video player the icon problem persists, until after taskbar's been minimized.

Have you added your media player to the server exclusion list?  After doing so, the glitches will stop.  Even if you're not planning on using the OSD, enable the OSD just to add your media player to the exclusions list.  After, go ahead and turn off OSD (if you don't want to use it), and your media player should work normally the next time you open it up.

I wasn't aware this could be done, I might put Precision X back on and try it... but I liked the old version better, before it changed. So I might just stick with Afterburner.

It's good to know there IS a workaround for Precision X though.

I posted this in my last comment as a "temporary workaround", but unfortunately, I'm still facing the same issue. Only way to prevent it is by closing EVGA Precision. Can't believe It's been over a month now and they haven't fixed it. Uninstalling it and going for Afterburner.

The workaround doesn't work with Windows 10 and latest PX version. Seriously, we need a full on fix. Ditch the server side application and provide a better means of using the OSD. Hell, separate OSD from PX altogether!

Thought I had solved the issue by using 5.3.5 but I still had random media player crashes and also discovered 5.3.5 was causing compatibility issues with geforce experience (GPU would stay pegged at full boost 24/7, custom fan options wern't working) I finally threw in the towel and installed latest MSI Afterburner and I've had zero issues.

I haven't tried 5.3.8 but at this point I'm just going to stick with my current config for now.

No video player crashes for me anymore, using PrecisionX 5.3.8.

Did have a weird issue in Mass Effect 3, the software monitoring keeps reading memory clock at 0mhz (both in overlay and in PrecisionX's monitoring graphs)... Which I'm pretty sure is impossible.

*edit* ^^This affected other games, happens after loading screens. It also causes the monitoring graph in the EVGA app to show 0mhz for memory clock as well. If the game is reloaded from a save the memory clock shows correctly again in both OSD and monitoring graph, for a while anyway.
