General Alert For All Interested Owners of the Classified E760 Motherboard:

Evga Tech Support says that all BL-141-E760-A1 Classified motherboards need "modification" in order to run the new Intel Core i7 970/980 CPU's! I wish I was kidding, but I'm not! Please read on...

Last night after work I installed my new Intel Core i7 970 CPU, the newest "6-Core Bargain" CPU available right now, in PC No.1, and much to my surprise I could not get Turbo Boost or a 25X Turbo Boost Multiplier to function no matter what I tried in BIOS, it just wouldn't work!

Finally, after much frustration I put the computer on a relaxed but strange combination of settings in BIOS to achieve a 4118Mhz overclocking @ 24X Multiplier, and went to sleep. I let it work all day on Folding@Home, as the computer usually does, while I was out on assignment (my work is photography) all day, and when I returned to my studio at about 4PM the Classified No.1 PC was stable, running cool and easy @ about 50-degrees C  Core Temps with the Prolimatech Megahalems doing its requisite job to adequately cool the new CPU quite well, but alas, I did not have Turbo Boost, or a 25X Multiplier available in BIOS so I called EVGA Tech Support and talked first to Erin, then someone else, and finally the call escalated to Tier 2 Tech Support where I talked with Robert.

We worked in BIOS changing everything possible to try and get the Turbo Boost to "kick into gear" because tech support thought that my CPU had mysteriously "turned off Turbo Boost", which can sometimes happen, I was told, but no luck changing settings in memory, in the No.1 BIOS panel to adjust Voltage and Multipliers etc, in short he was as dumbfounded as I had been all night last night, and today even while thinking about it I had no answer to the problem.

Robert and I worked for perhaps 30 minutes together on the telephone to try and coax my PC to work correctly, but no go. He went offline then for about 10 minutes and chatted with Garret, the No.1 troubleshooter and expert problem solver in Tier 2, just below the Product Manager he is in the Tech Support hierarchy. And when Robert came back on the line he told me the following, and I'll paraphrase rather than quote because I didn't tape the call:

"We can take care of this problem, but the board is going to need some 'modifications' in order to run the 970 and 980 CPU's (both) with Turbo Boost and 25X Multiplier working correctly, not to mention the memory timings are 'off also', and they will be fixed too. I'm going to send you in email a UPS Call Tag, as we will pay shipping both ways for the repairs necessary, and we are sure that this will fix the problem. This is a new problem, in fact I found out about it just now, and it's specifically ONLY with the new 970/980X and 990X CPU's, which are all based on the same CPU configuration (he went offline to consult again before he told me more info...)."

About then I asked him what the "modifications" would involve...and he replied, "I don't know exactly, as there will be a general alert later tonight on this subject for all Tech Support personnel, but for now suffice to say we are going to fix your board 100% and you'll have full use of the 970's Turbo Boost and a 25X Multiplier, as it's supposed to function, after you receive the board back after the modifications are completed here."

And that's the whole story! My Case Number is 874653 if anyone needs to reference it when/if you call EVGA Tech Support about the situation, and/or if you are an EVGA Classified E760 owner and plan on running either of the new CPU's, that would be the 970, 980 or 990X CPU's, then you should call EVGA Tech Support and arrange to have your board "modified" like mine is going to be also.

The CPU's work, mind you all they work, but you just have no Turbo Boost or the 25X Multiplier is not available for you in the GUI/Windows desktop no matter what you try. If you reference any settings in BIOS, in fact all settings in BIOS, and Everest Ultimate, and any other utility, Eleet, CPU-Z, Hardware Monitor, whatever, they will all indicate that the highest multiplier available will be 24X, and no Turbo Boost will work, it just doesn't function at all...even though it says in BIOS that it IS going to function, and that your top multiplier will be 25X when you boot the computer.

Trust me on this, it is futile to try and do any settings in BIOS with this hardware combination, it simply will NOT FUNCTION! Make arrangements for your boards to be modified at EVGA Tech Support/RMA Dept here in Los Angeles if you are planning on running the 980, 990, or 970 CPU's with any Classified E760 board, and perhaps others too... I don't know for a fact that other boards are affected but it stands to reason that they could be also...so before you go ahead and order CPU's and motherboards, get your combination checked at EVGA Tech Support to make certain that you are clear, clean and get a full bill of health with respect to the Turbo Boost function, and a 25X multiplier with these new CPU's!

I am sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings and controversy, but it's better to be aware of this than not, and so I chose to publish this tonight for everyone's benefit who owns a Classified E760 board, and the other boards from "that era" which would be the 2009-model year boards, they should probably all be checked for compatibility with the CPU's mentioned above. EVGA Tech Support's telephone number, for those who don't have it in the USA, is 1-888-880-3842.

I don't mean to cause any panic or undue concern about this, as EVGA is on the case and will fix your boards to work with the new CPU's, they have promised me this. I want you to simply make the arrangements necessary to have your boards "modified" to accept the new 970, 980X, or 990X CPU's before you go ahead and try and work with them, because you will NOT have Turbo Boost or the 25X Multiplier available OEM, stock components in place.

    Hi 529th,

It seems that you found a older post here and while some of the information is correct some is unfortunately a little off.  In order to clear this up the below information is accurate.

The Westmere modification is only necessary for I7 970 for Turbo Mode, and the Westmere model CPU's for compatiblity.

980X and 990X cpus run fine without any update.

Seems the mod didn't fix the turbo issue, and also there is another issue.  I bought a W3690 with an unlocked multi and the EVGA motherboard will not allow any multi past 26.  Please contact me ASAP

Wouldn't it be more efficient to send an email to directly to support or call them?

EVGA techs can't always post on the forums. You need to contact EVGA tech support via email or telephone.
