Is an EK-FC980ti Classy compatible with an EVGA GTX 780 Classified? 2015/07/20 12:18:32 (permalink)
Hi Derek, I'm hoping you can help.

I currently have an EVGA GTX 780 Classified GPU... the "EK-FC780 Classy" water block is no  longer available. I have just found out that the "EK-FC780 Classy" is compatible with an EVGA GTX980 Ti Classified GPU. My question is: would the "EK-FC980 GTX Classy -  Acetal+Nickel" be reverse compatible with my older GPU?
Igor from EK has responded to this same queries but said to just take a look at the 780 vs the 980ti and match them up.
: "What you must check out are the capacitors, rams and everything else that "sticks out". If they are all in the same place on both cards. If the capacitors are in a different places than sadly the block won't fit on it."

Would you know the answer?
Thanks!
Kris

From the best of my knowledge, the block won't fit.

the 780 block wouldn't fit the 980, caused PCB Flexing, and the memory is in a different placement.  I would NOT suggest it, as a user has "Modified" his GTX 980 block to fit his 980ti and it doesn't cover some of the memory.

Since the 980 block won't properly fit the 980ti, I doubt it will properly fit the 780.

wait.  They are checking to see if the 980ti can use the 780 blocks.  If the 980ti can use the 780 blocks, they are going to pull the 780 block out of the EOL stage. be patient for positive verification and you may be able to pick up the 780 blocks again.

Also, i am sure you can find someone selling a couple of 780 blocks some where.

Wow nice! Thanks for the heads-up Scarlet-Tech... appreciate it. I've been looking for water blocks for my 2x 780 classifieds now for about 6months. Nothing has come up sadly.

Did you find some information on their testing the 980ti use on 780 blocks somewhere online?

It is somewhere on the forums here.  I will try to find it for you in a little bit and post it back here.  I am at work, and can't search the forums right now.

We're still waiting on a physical copy of the card.  Once we have it and we do our checks, I will let everyone knows the results.

This may have already been answered, if so, sorry for the repetition. Any word on a fc wb for the 980 Ti Classified?

When the 780 Classy block will be physically confirmed to fit on a 980Ti Classy card by the R&D team, the production of the 780 Classy block will be resumed.

Thanks for the response and please forgive questions that may be unanswerable right now. Do you have some rough notion of a time frame for physical confirmation? How confident are you that the 780 Classy wb is an effective fit based on visual?

I know that at least one member here have already fitted the 780 Classy block on his 980 Ti Classy.

From our side of the story, when we were at the Quakecon, we met with the guys from EVGA and talked again with them about the Classy card they are suppose to send to us and they said they will probably be able to ship one they have at the lab. This was last saturday so maybe it's on it's way.

Thanks for the info. I've got two blocks coming for two cards also on the way. I've used EK for several series of Classified with great success and appreciate the product. Looking forward to playing with these.

Hi, I was wondering if any of the EK terminals will work with the z170 FTW due to the spacing of pcie1 and pci2?

Yes,

Either the EK-FC Terminal DUAL Parallel or the EK-FC Terminal DUAL Serial will work. :)

So there are no Waterblocks (which provide full cooling on the pcb, not only the gpu chip, also vram and the other ones (all) for the 980 Ti Classified or KNGPN?

The K|ngp|n does not have a block yet.

Again, there is not coverage on the memory vrm. Everything else that requires cooling is actively cooled. The 980 block, which included contact on the memory vrm, does not have fluid going over it, so it is semi passive, as that section is not actively cooled. Basically, it was almost just for looks, since it is not be in active cooled like everything else. Some of the heat would leech over to the active cooling, but by the time it got there, it would be a miniscule amount at best.

The EK 780 Classy that fits on the 980 Ti Classy, covers everything except the memory vrm at the end of the card but those one don't get that hot.

The block for the 980 Ti KPE is currently being designed so no ETA for now

But are you making a block for the 980 Ti Classified or you dont make one for this special model and you tell everyone to buy the 780 ti Classy block?

Actually, the BP block can work with the 980Ti kpe, but with partial mem not covered, and according to Tin in the oc guide could be covered with pads, but not sure if I would,  personally I would wait and see if one does get until one is  released for it.

The 780 Classy block has already been verified to fit the 980ti classy, so production of the 780 classy will resume so it doesn't require a full remake and a few extra months to create a brand new block.

Allright, thank you!

So this will fit my 980 Ti Classy?
EK-FC780 GTX Classy - Nickel
EAN: 3831109868607

But will this Backplate also Fit?
EK-FC780 GTX Classy Backplate - Black Rev.2.0
EAN: 3831109868683

Because there is no info about the 980 TI Classy, only about the KNGPN?

Or is the original 980 TI Classy Backplate the better choice?
