Something tells me the revert back to previous windows is gonna cause issues lol. I rather have standalone for dual boot. But, my alienware laptop already came with win8, so I might let it have the win10. But my desktop def not gonna get it.

Microsoft's policy is one PC, one license, one OS. It's a free upgrade of an existing licensed OS not a free gift.

yes   that is true  but the fact is  most of us  i assume are running a legitimate Windows  OS   we paid and bought so this free upgrade to windows 10 is Free  and it tided from my understanding to yout Microsoft account so    if you change somthing big and reinstall you are still activated  and if liek currently  your activation  some how gets De-active you just call microsoft like always to help with that

Do you work for MS or something? I see you posting on multiple threads appearing to defend MS without actually addressing the issues people have with it. We hear over and over how it's a 'free' upgrade, but that's totally a matter of perspective. it stops you using a W7/W8 version you paid for, so it's more of a swap.. "Here we'll give you this, and in return we'll take away what you already have." That's not free. Free means it's costs you nothing. This costs you the use of your existing PAID FOR o/s. Plus, they get to shove anything they want down your throat via Windows Updates. This isn't even an equal trade when you take that into consideration, lol.

Yeah.. no thanks, you can take your 'free' and rotate on it.

Ok see  your being to dang Picky  on the  whole they are taking away something to give you something.   Now as for the  shove anything donw windows update   ummm  they already do that now  and while yes you can choose to not install updates of any kind  now  like oh i dont know security updates or patches  or anything that is ridiculously stupid  and  i just updated my moms laptop  that is running the RTM windows  10 already like some of us  and  she had updates and guess what  it is Home edition and i was able to  set those to now restart until next week

and  you do realize despite  the fact it is a Free upgrade it is no different then the version you can buy   of windows 10 or well Pre-order for buy on the 29th  .  it seems like really that Microsoft does somthing right   based on user feedback  5+ Million users  who gave pleny of feedback and yet ther is always someone  a group small group of people who did not test or ther feedback seemd to go  un touched   whio complain of something small.

Is this option available in the Windows 10 preview? I forgot to check when I was using it.

Quick question. I'm in a little pickle right now as my ancient Dell laptop died on me. I need one desperatly, but can't shell out 1500 bucks right now to just go buy one and own it. I think I'm going to have to go rent to own one from Aarons or something. If that one comes with 8.1, will I be able to do the 10 upgrade on it? My daughter has one from there with 8.1 on it and she had a couple little issues a while back with it and it was nearly a nightmare just trying to figure out how to restore to a previous backup. Almost like it was a locked proprietory version of 8.1 or something.

You will need to upgrade your Windows 7 or 8 to 10 only once. Microsoft will get your hardware ID and the next time you do clean install will automatically transmit it to their activation servers, validate it and activate your Windows 10 copy. While doing clean install - skip the step where you can enter the license key.
Guys, please correct me if I am wrong.

there is an option for "save nothing" during the install,
we used this on my son's and seems to be pretty much a "clean" install (after disk clean-up / defrag )
He just copied his user folder from Win7 and copied what he wanted (saved games) from it back after he re-installed the games and stuff he uses.

If you want to do a clean install you can also get the product key of windows 10 using a little program called produkey, works great.

I have a licensed/activated copy of Win7 Pro, and have the "get windows 10 icon".

Rather then waiting, I used mediacreation tool vs waiting for my reserved copy to download. (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/media-creation-tool-install).

Launching setup (while in windows) from my newly created usb media, upgrade process starts. (chose 64b and Win10 Pro)

Everything goes well until I'm prompted for a product key. I entered in my Win7 product key, but it's looking for a Win10 key.

There is a skip button, but didn't try this yet as the Win10 activation information is a little sketchy now.

Do I hit the skip button and Win10 automatically provide a upgrade key when complete?

That is my understanding. Use produkey to find your activation code for Windows 10 after installation is complete: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html

I never had a problem with produkey. AVG lets it download and I perform a full system scan using Malwarebytes once a week and it never detects it.

There are program alternatives like KeyFinder and Advanced Tokens Manager. If you can't already trust nirsoft program.

Plus, nirsoft page did warned about false antivirus alerts too.

A Windows7 key will not work on a Windows10 install (when running Win10 setup and being prompted for key). I was able to install Windows10 without being prompted for a key when I ran the "Get Window10 App" from the taskbar. Not sure why the mediacreation method is not working (at least for me), everything I have read says it supports the upgrade.

Do the upgrade,
make sure it's activated.
Format for hard drive.
reinstall windows 10 and skip the part where it asks for the key.
When it connects to the internet it will activate it's self automatically.
I know for a fact, I'm running it right now.
