you can download the ISO files with their media creation tool and make bootable USBs or DVDs.

The ISO download took all of 5 minutes. I however do not know how you get the windows 10 CD key unless you still have to start the upgrade process thru windows update to see/get a CD key for 10.

Edit: Yup looks like you have to do the upgrade FIRST which generates the key then you can just do a clean install with the ISO.

I'd still highly recommend you do a clean install afterwards.

I've only got 1 of 3 machines even showing the download available. My laptop is downloading it right now. So I suppose I'll see how it goes. Then I need to make a boot disc and do some clean install on all machines I suppose.

I was finished in under 40 minutes. I also have close to 100 errors in my Event viewer. Then it borked my nVidia display driver and installed 353.62 without my permission. I forgot to remove all of my other drives except for the system drive but did manage to disable some of them in Device manager before it installed. The last time I tried to install the Windows 10 preview to a SSD in my docking station it scattered the UEFI across 4 other SSD and 1 HDD and I couldn't boot until I restored a system image.

So far so good on my end. I was advised by Ford Motor Company not to update because they hadn't tested everything with their systems and programs. But I said screw it and did it anyway. I've only had Windows 8 for about 2 weeks, but first impressions of 10 are that I like it sooooooo much better.

is it possible to download and do a clean install afterwards instead of updating?

It's a staggered download. If you signed up for the upgrade then you'll get it eventually.

I couldn't open the nVidia Control panel. Afterburner showed 353.62 drivers installed while Control Panel showed 350.12 installed. Reinstalled 350.12 without any problems except the stinking buzzards at nVidia installed the GeForce experience with their updater and the 3D driver too even though I chose not to install. I hope I can still run the 347.88 drivers. I'll have to try that later.

I've just started the media creation tool to download Windows 10 choosing the iso format.
hope to be able to create a bootable Windows 10 pro USB drive afterwards to perform a clean install.
I assume we'll have to use our Windows 8.1 Pro product key during installation.
    am I right?

Identical situation here. I am too awaiting an answer to this. I assume, A) We can do a clean install and just enter our Win 8/8.1 Product key, or B) Do the update, activate the license after performing, and THEN do a clean install. I read about this, and during the clean install, you press "Skip" during the key entry since the PC was already initially activated after the update was done.

    From Windows support site

    • If you upgraded to Windows 10 on this PC by taking advantage of the free upgrade offer and successfully activated Windows 10 on this PC in the past, you won't have a Windows 10 product key, and you can skip the product key page by selecting the Skip button. Your PC will activate online automatically so long as the same edition of Windows 10 was successfully activated on this PC by using the free Windows 10 upgrade offer.

Might as well surrender on the video driver issue, I did. Windows Update shoved the 353.62 driver on me again even though I told it not to install any device drivers. I just gave up and downloaded the 353.62 WHQL from nVidia.  Those MS scumbags have already won this round. Curse you, Microsoft!!!

Windows Update now shows an error about the 353.62 driver available to install but it doesn't show up as hidden or available to be hidden using that tool.

Have you tried thermal optics in a tank playing BF4? It's all light gray and I can't see anything. I haven't tried BF3 yet.

I don't think normal people will have a problem with this garbage. They might even like it. It's made for them and fat slobs like Robert Dell and the owners of Gateway and HP that want a self maintaining identical OS for every machine on the planet that they'll never have to worry about because they're too lazy to maintain it themselves. This is hardly customizable for performance or gaming enthusiasts like us. I've had to disable tons of useless services and reload just as many tweaks with just as many no longer available to be tweaked. I'll give this a week and them I'm restoring my Windows 7 image. I can't even delete the old Restore Points in Disk Cleanup. Backups and creating a system image appear to be on a schedule with no way to do it manually except for some carry over from Windows 7 that gives me errors because it can't find Disk 6 or Disk 8. There's a good reason for that, there's only four drives on this PC.

Just FYI my issue was my windows 10 pro download thru windows update was being corrupted.
    Error code 80240020

    if this is happening to you try the following to fix it;

    1. Go into "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download" and delete everything in that folder.
    2. Now, run the command prompt as an administrator. Type in "wuauclt.exe /updatenow".
    3. Go to your Control Panel > Windows Update -> check for updates.

IDK. I just installed over Windows 7 and it activated automatically. Use this to find out your new product key: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html
I used it and it works.

    Thanks for that Z

used my key-finder and had a different product key that i copied and pasted to the activation box, after 5 or 6 times it was successful!!!

we also did a clean 353.62 WHQL from nVidia install and disabled hardware driver updates (not with tool)
seems to be holding at the moment.

My son says thank you very much, he has 2 465 Fermi's in SLI now and working at the moment with the new driver, will update here if anything changes.

I'm very very glad for this news, time to make some money from the normal people

There's a good reason for that, there's only four drives on this PC.

no ill make a killing installing it for people :D

I also have it on my work laptop, 10 Pro for testing purposes and it works fine, can't use it on my main PC, tried it, but I think ive got some driver issue somewhere, it runs terribly, but 8.1 runs great. I think its the nforce 750 chipset at this point

had nforce driver missing also (cpu) on his, had to download from nvidia, (legacy win7) install then manually browse and direct driver update to locate it in the nvidia fold on the c drive. it then updated the drivers for the motherboard.
