On my old system, my OCZ Revodrive (which runs at PCI-E 2.0 4x) would work just fine and would bench at 950MB/s. On my new x99 classified board with a 5960x CPU (I should have plenty of PCI lanes), it doesn't seem to matter what slot I put it in, it always runs at 1x. This is pretty frustrating!

I have 2 GPU's. One in the top slot PE1 and one in the PE4 slot. I've tried putting the revodrive in PE3 and PE6 and both run the card at 1x.... I know a 3.0 1x slot does 2.5Gbps which is about 1GB/s so the card should not be bottlenecking by this 1x slot... On POST, it shows 2.5Gbps speed though which is strange.

Really wondering if an m.2 ssd might be better although I just got everything up and running the way I like it... ugh any ideas? Thanks

Have you flashed the BIOS to the most up to date version and switched the lane to x4?

Also, the M.2 on the X99 Classified is only rated at PCI-E 2.0 x4.

The bios setting only sets the generation not the speed right? If I set it to gen 2 instead of auto would it put it at 4x? And yes I'm on the latest bios version

Yes, you should be able to select the speed as well, if I recall correctly.

So I set the PCI slot to Gen2 and during post, sometimes the Revodrive shows up and sometimes it doesn't which prevents the machine from booting.

With it set to Gen2, the POST message (When it works) shows that link speed is still 1x but requested speed is 5Gbps instead of 2.5Gbps which is what it does when set to Auto.

Not really sure what to do about this. The revodrive worked great on my old MSI board and would get 1,000MB/s and now it's cut in half.

This is the bench from my old system:

Here it is on my brand spanking new x99 classified :'(

    Any help would be appreciated!

Re: OCZ RevoDrive running at PCI-E 1x?? 2015/07/31 23:34:38 (permalink)
Can anyone help me here? If I put the Revodrive in PE5 it runs at Gen2 4X. This slot is covered up by the 2nd GPU that is in PE4.

Now I've tried putting the SSD in PE2, PE3 same issue. It runs at GEN1 1x which cuts the revodrive's speed in half.

If I put the 2nd GPU in PE2, both cards run at 8X... but they get very hot this way since they are right next to each other and its very tough to remove them if I ever have to. If I put the 2nd GPU in PE3, it runs it at 4x.. Whiskey tango foxtrot? The whole reason I bought this board & cpu combo was so that all devices would run at max speed and not have these problems. I'm on the latest bios / firmware & driver.

Another weird thing - I just installed windows 10 (on a spare drive, without the revodrive installed in the system) to see if both GPU's will run at 16x. One in Pe1 and the other in PE4, the secondary is running at 8x! Why? My CPU should be more than capable of running both GPU's at 16x. Clearly something isn't right. Please help! I've called evga support & OCZ and neither know what to do...

Also with the revodrive, sometimes it shows up in POST and sometimes it doesn't. The only way to get it to boot off of it is to go into the bios after it throws this error: LEGACY_OPROM_NOSPACE (and it's not listed in the bios when it used to be), click save even after not changing anything then suddenly its back...

PCI-E Slot Breakdown PCI-E Lane Distribution (40 Lane Processor)
    PE1 – x16 (x8 if PE2 is used)
    PE2 – x8
    PE3 – x8
    PE4 – x16 (x8 if PE3 is used)
    PE5 – x4 (Gen 2 only, 4 lanes pulled from PCH)
    PE6 – x8

PCI-E Lane Distribution (28 Lane Processor)
    PE1 – x16 (x8 if PE2)
    PE2 – x8
    PE3 – x8 (Slot is *NOT* functional with a 28 lane processor.)
    PE4 – x8
    PE5 – x4 (Gen 2 only, 4 lanes pulled from PCH)
    PE6 – x4

Say even if you had as you said GPUs on Slot 1 & 3, your Top GPU should still be at x16 and 3rd Slot GPU at x8, not x4 as you stated.  Shouldn't be at that speed.  Also, your Revo should still be ok in either Slot #4 or #5 at x4.

Try another BIOS and flash that one to the newest version if the one you've been on doesn't do anything for you.  Last resort would to RMA the board if all else fails.

Sorry to hear about your troubles.  I know the feeling when things arise.

I would also advise on staying away from Win 10 as it could further complicate things.  Lets try to keep it simple as possible with everything at stock settings including CPU, RAM, GPUs, etc.

Yea it doesn't make sense to me. I tried it with only the gpu in pe1 and pe3 with the os running on a sata drive and still the 2nd gpu was at 8x. Shouldn't both be at 16x? Going to try with v1.12 bios to see if I have the same problem.

Was this all happening on BIOS 1.18?  We never got the version you were on to be sure so there's no confusion later down the road from any helping party.

Re: OCZ RevoDrive running at PCI-E 1x?? 2015/08/01 09:59:08 (permalink)
Yes this is all on v1.18. I flipped back to one of the other BIOS v1.12 and it doesn't have this issue.

    GPU1 in PE1 @ 8x Gen3
    SSD in PE2 @ 4x Gen2
    GPU2 in PE4 @ 8x Gen3

I guess that's the best I can get. I was under the impression that both GPU's would be at 16x with a 40 lane CPU? I know its not a bottleneck but I'm just trying to clarify.

Clearly there is a bug in the new bios v1.18 as the Revo would not show up under post randomly and give me the LEGACY_OPROM_NO_SPACE error on boot. Can someone from EVGA staff chime in on this? I can't find anything about what this error code means. Its not happening on the older versions of the BIOS.

I'm sorry that won't help, but man this board definitely has some serious PCIe compatibility issues :s

I'm beginning to be very annoyed, is EVGA at least working on it?
Is it possible that it's an hardware issue they'll never be able to solve ? At least they should tell us ....

No need to apologize. We pay a premium for these products and I expect them to work without issue. I'm not doing anything crazy with this board. These boards are for enthusiasts who will push them to the limits (which I'm not) and it's still buggy.

What I don't get is if the PCI-E slot is set to Auto, the motherboard negociates a *GEN1 1X* speed for the Revodrive. !?!

On v1.18, If you set it to Gen2, it doesn't fix the issue.

On v1.12, if you set it to Gen2 for the revodrive it appears to work as expected.

STILL though I'm confused as to WHY my 3 PCI-E Devices aren't running at full speed when there are plenty of lanes available.

Whats the point in having a 40 lane CPU when the motherboard won't use them and run all the devices at full speed?

It appears that I can't use more than 28 PCI-E lanes at once... how can I tell if my CPU is the problem? how do you show how many lanes are in use or available? CPU-Z or GPU-Z doesn't show how many are free but only what is in use.

Yup, you seem to have a hardware issue.  You still should be getting x16 on both GPUs with the CPU you have regardless even on another BIOS unless the 1.12 didn't have that support as of yet because I know on release, everyone got 1.12 and the later BIOS upgrades fixed many issues at the time.

Either something is wrong with your CPU, check the CPU and socket for any bent pins, etc. and if nothing shows up wrong there, I'd start a RMA on the MB and possibly the CPU if the problems persist after getting a RMA'd MB or vise versa.

It depends how long you've had it now since you purchased it and what the return policy is at Frys.  If that's past its time, than yes, Intel would be the place to go for a RMA.

Take a screen shot of your BIOS and post it on here with everything connected on the board and under the PCI-E Auto tabs mark.  Its always good to document your issues with images.

Here it is... in GPU-Z it fluctuates between PCI-E 1.1 and 3.0. I still don't get why my 2nd GPU is running at 4X?

This is so weird. It's like no matter what I do, the CPU or motherboard won't give me more lanes!

The 2.0 PCI-E 4x card is the SSD. I have a ticket open with EVGA and this is what they said to do:

    Hello,
You would need to put the revodrive on the pci-e 6 slot. So the configuration you would need to put it, is video card 1 in pci-e 1 and the 2nd video card would need put in pci-e 3 and the revo drive would be in the pci-e 6. After that you should see the two video card in x16.

    Regards,
    EVGA

So as we can see this only made matters worse. I guess I'm stuck.

What other devices could be using PCI-E lanes? The embedded RAID adapter? Does it use PCIE lanes? Thats the only thing I can think of. Still, this should not cause me such grief.

Try EVGA's recommendation with everything at stock settings, including running the RAM @ 2133mhz.  I know I've heard sometimes things can get a bit glitchy when you have a 8 core CPU + high speed RAM, let alone having everything OC'd.

Than try having one stick of RAM in and each individual GPU tested in PE1 and than do the same for PE4.  Than try both PE1 and PE4 with one stick in and see what the BIOS says while everything's at stock settings.

Make sure you try this on the 1.18 or just reflash to 1.18 on another BIOS as v1.12 was the beginning version as there were quite a few bugs at the time and most things have been ironed out since than.  I know I've asked you to go back to 1.12 just to see.

Can I also ask what were your avg. temps for your CPU and GPUs on full load and what are you using to cool them.

Sorry for all the questions but just trying to iron out any hardware that might be an issue possible.  Just hang in there.

The first screenshot is what EVGA recommended and as you can see it does not behave as they said it would.

I've tried every combination of slots I can think of and yes being OC'd didn't matter (I've tried on stock everything after clearing CMOS).

Each GPU works fine. I had more issues on v1.18 than 1.12 so I'm staying on 1.12 until they release a new one that fixes these PCIE lane issues. No where in the documentation does it say that for Gen2 cards, that you have to manually set it to Gen2 in order for it to negotiate the proper speeds. This is supposed to be automatic.

Temps never get above 65-70C under full load and temps hover from 45-50C at idle.. I had the CPU at 4.7Ghz but I've dialed it back a bit just to be sure I don't fry anything. Honestly I'm tired of fiddling with it.

There are a lot of unanswered questions in this thread that remain. I just want to know what is eating up all the available PCIE lanes that I paid a premium to get.

Are you under custom water cooling?

I don't think its something eating up the lanes.  I think it might be some bad components that's causing all of this.  Your last resort is to either start an RMA with the MB first and go from there.  If that fails, do the CPU than and if that fails, RMA the RAM but before doing so, I would just run some memtest.

Its a corsair H100i CPU cooler.

I know that having both GPU's at 8x is fine but the inconsistencies is what really bothers me. This is supposed to be a board that is used for extreme overclockers and stability and consistency is paramount.

I've done tons of stress testing and everything seems fine. Ran dozens of 3dmark tests and AIDA64 tests without much problem aside from the occasional reset / BSOD.

encrypt, what is your Atto bench test at 4x, 8x and 16x? is there a big difference?

This is with the slot set to "AUTO" which negotiates GEN1 @ 1X speed:

With the slot set to Gen2 it negotiates a Gen2 4x speed:

SSD guru shows the issue as well if the slot is set to auto:

All firmwares and bios are up to date on the ssd's.....

What still doesn't make sense to me is why don't both GPU's run at 16x when I have plenty of lanes available? Even if I set the slots to Gen3 it doesn't seem to make a difference... I know it's not bottlenecking the GPU's I'm just trying to understand.
