This will keep you from having to disable and enable g-sync every time you enter and exit a game.

Tools needed:
Takeownership

#1 Install takeownership by running the installtakeownership.reg file.
#2 If running a sli setup make sure sli is enabled first before continueing to step #3.
#3 Open nvidia control panel and select the setup g-sync menu.
#4 Disable G-Sync then close the nvidia control panel. G-Sync should now be off on the desktop. Red light on PG278Q should now be white.
#5 Open my computer and search for nvgsyncdetours.dll. Two files should appear, delete both the files, one of the files will not delete saying you need permission to do so, to delete it simply right click it and select take ownership then try to delete it again.
#6 Delete the files from the recycle bin.
#7 Reboot PC.
#8 Enable g-sync from setup g-sync menu inside the nvidia control panel.
#9 Notice g-sync isn't active on the desktop anymore. Opening applications that use g-sync will work as normal with g-sync enabling like it should and disabling like it should when going back to the desktop when closing applications that use g-sync. No more enabling and disabling it.

Notes for sli users: If you disable sli for any reason g-sync will become active on the desktop again. To fix this simply disable g-sync, enable sli, enable g-sync.

Other Notes: Rebooting the PC will cause g-sync to become active on the desktop again.
- How to fix for single card users after rebooting: Disable g-sync from setup g-sync menu, reboot pc, enable g-sync.
- How to fix for sli users after rebooting: Disable sli, disable g-sync, enable sli, enable g-sync.

Would this be for older GSYNC monitors? I have a Gsync monitor and it allows to either 1) have GSYNC on when I'm in an application that is in "full screen mode", or 2) have GSYNC constantly enable, even in desktop. The only time it turns off is if I activate 3D-Vision/stereoscopic. Which is normal. Gsync reactivates if I turn 3D-Vision off.

It's for any g-sync monitor. On a default install of the driver 353.30 my PG278Q shows a red light indicating that g-sync is active on the desktop, the only way to correct this issue would be to disable g-sync by going to the setup g-sync menu inside the nvidia control panel and unchecking "Enable G-Sync" to disable g-sync completely or do the method I listed here. Other options listed are... enable G-Sync for full screen or enable g-sync for windowed and full screen mode which do nothing to disable g-sync while on the desktop.

I haven't seen this issue with my Swift monitor since driver 353.30.  Strange it isn't happening for all Gsync display's...

I did some tests last night...And my conclusion is that I don't have this problem. I did take note of it though if I so happen to have an issue with G-SYNC, but everything is working as normal.

Do you see G-SYNC randomly shut off when you get out of a application that is using full screen?

In my case the G-sync it's always on, I haven't seen the G-sync light goes to another color, in desktop mode, while gaming, or watching movies

It's really up to you. Do you mind letting the g-sync module run 24/7? If not, don't worry about it. If so, do the tutorial.

I doubt it as this only affects g-sync on the desktop.

@Sajin Since recently disabling G-Sync (which I hadn't in a long time) to run Firestrike benchmark I noticed my PG3448Q power led was white. It then occurred to me that I have not seen the white led and rather the red led (G-Sync ON) on the desktop for all this time.

Is it by design that G-Sync should be turned off on the desktop? What is responsible for keeping G-Sync on on the desktop? Is an Nvidia driver issue or something else? Perhaps an issue with the G-Sync module/monitors instead?

Edit: Can't find nvgsyncdetours.dll. This is quite old, is there a newer method?

G-sync use to stay off on the desktop until nvidia changed it to stay on all the time. This workaround makes it work like it did before nvidia changed things.

Is there any reason why they did this? Are there any negative effects to having the G-Sync module running constantly?

What are the negatives of GSync running on the desktop, and how can I tell if this issue affects me? Addressing these two questions in the OP would have been helpful as providing random instructions to people who might not be aware of this issue is a cause for some unnecessary confusion.

@mike406 I don't know what the negative's are yet... but as for if you are affected, what monitor do you have? Most Asus G-Sync monitors show a red power light when G-Sync is active and a white light when it is not. Your G-Sync monitor brand may do something similar..

I just install the 3D Vision Driver Turn It Off and then Remove the 3D Vision Driver.
Sorry I forgot Lord of the Forums to run the command below after I installed the 3D Vision Driver
    C:\Program Files (x86)\NVIDIA Corporation\3D Vision\nvstlink.exe" /disable

And that sets G-Sync back to turning off on the desktop? You mean the 3d vision driver right?

Negative effects would be that your g-sync module may burnout faster.

Negative effects would be that your g-sync module may burnout faster.

Seems strange that Nvidia would purposely do that. Is there more to the story?

Waiting for @bcavnaugh to clarify what the 3d vision driver has to do with this...

@mike406 I don't know what the negative's are yet... but as for if you are affected, what monitor do you have? Most Asus G-Sync monitors show a red power light when G-Sync is active and a white light when it is not. Your G-Sync monitor brand may do something similar..

It's a Viewsonic XG2703-GS and I don't think there is a way to tell when GSync is on. At least, I'm not aware of a way to check on this monitor. I've always just trusted it isn't off when I'm playing fullscreen games.

I just install the 3D Vision Driver Turn It Off and then Remove the 3D Vision Driver.

And that sets G-Sync back to turning off on the desktop? You mean the 3d vision driver right?

It stays off even after you uninstall the 3D Vision Driver.
At least that is what 3DMarks shows me.
It even stayed off after uninstalling ALL NVIDIA Drivers and Software Running DDU and Installing a Newer Driver and PhysX Drivers.
At least that is what 3DMarks shows me.

Sorry I forgot Lord of the Forums to run the command below after I installed the 3D Vision Driver
    C:\Program Files (x86)\NVIDIA Corporation\3D Vision\nvstlink.exe" /disable

Yes it adds it to the NVIDIA Control Panel to turn it off.

But it will still run in fullscreen 3d applications as desired?

If you have some test I can run to see let me know.
I run all my Games in Full Screen GOW4 in SLI was my last gamed played.
Only one of 6 Rigs had the issue with 3DMarks and G-Sync.
On all my rigs I only install the Graphics and PhysX Drivers and have not seen any Gaming Issues.
