Yeah, no real surprises.  I am looking forward to it, my use so far of W10 has been REALLY positive.

The new VirtualBox is really good for running old games on Win10. The only thing I can't lose is Windows Media Center. I still use that daily for TV/DVR/Netflix. I'm not going to buy an XBox just for that. I guess my Win7 machine will stick around for a while.

Yes, that is the only weakness for many users

AKA if you still want to be able to do everything on your PC and have full control then stick with Windows 7.

I'd wait until all drivers from all vendors you use get updates to win 10 ... and for sakes of stability wait at least 1-2 months after win 10 release and watch comments on it ... most new RTM OSes are bad until they get patches ;)

as per performance of win 10 it's nearly identical as win 8/8.1, difference of maybe 1-2% in favor of win 10. not sure how win 7 stands against the benchmarks, because I upgraded my home rig to win 8 a year ago and haven't seen win 7 vs win 10 comparisons yet ...

Mandatory automatic updates - including 3rd party hardware such as NVidia drivers.

Don't want NVidia HDAudio, NVidia Experience, NVidia 3D drivers? Too bad.

Oh, you had NVidia set up for SLI and other custom settings? Too bad, Windows Update will force the update and reset it to defaults. You wont even know, you'll just be wondering why your fps has suddenly dropped, and waste a few hours running tests trying to figure out if one of your cards have died etc..

You only wanted the drivers for your sound card, and not the bloated resource-hogging software they offer? Too bad, you're getting it.

And guess what - if you uninstall any of their forced updates, it will make a change to your system that will block windows from doing ANY updates whatsoever from then on.

ONCE AGAIN these MORONS at MicroSoft telling you what you want regardless of how loud you yell to the contrary. They just never learn.

    Brilliant.

That's only if you're on Home. Most tech-savvy and enthusiast users will go for Pro, where you can turn off the updates. I don't see where it's forcing the install of other drivers like the sound card. I've got two machines on Win10, one with a SB X-Fi Gamer, the other with a Realtek onboard. On both machines, the drivers from WU don't work, so I installed the "Daniel_K" pack for the Soundblaster, and the drivers direct from Realtek. WU hasn't forced an update of either of them, and I have all updates set to automatic.

On home version, You can defer updates on professional, even critical ones on enterprise.

To my understanding the Home version will not allow you to decline or change the update configuration. You get it all.
The Professional version allows you to delay the install but that has a time limit before that is forced into the OS.
The Enterprise version allows you to control the update feature but the fine print says bulk licensing only.

This is probably one reason that it is free to upgrade. For me, I think I'll stay on 7 and let the customer base that switched to 10 do what they did when 8 came out.

Yes i've been following Windows 10 and so far i'm not impressed. On the bright side it looks more usable than Windows 8/8.1 which I have on a laptop.

I am on Pro, and with Pro and W10 you can delay an update but only for a specified time, then it is forced down your throat just like Home users. I have seen Realtec updates in MS Update, as well as Razer (I have one sitting in 'optional updates' right now on W7pro), I have definitely seen MS Updates for my Network adapter (imagine how bad that could screw things up), and of course NVidia. My current SoundBlaster Z I have not seen in MS Update, but likely only because I keep it up to date myself (or the software updates itself before MS can try to). I'm sure there will be many many others. Wait until MS tries to update something like your USB drivers and kills your hub, or better yet, as I mentioned, your Network adapter.. how you gonna fix that with no connection huh? lol... this blows.

It's not just an MS issue, and it's not like they're the ones releasing the drivers. Hell, I ran the Intel updater on my laptop, then spent the better part of an hour getting my bluetooth mouse working afterwards.

People that are using Home aren't the ones that are building their own systems, they're running pre-built HP's, Acer, or Dell boxes, and are usually unable to find Windows Update in the control panel anyway. I see this as a good thing for them.

For the tech-savvy users of Pro or Enterprise, there's already utilities and guides that you can find on Win10 forums and sub-reddits that will allow you to disable the updates.

    Erin,

From what I have read on that and it was on multiple sites is that MS will shut the update portion down completely and you will receive no support. The EULA has language in it that you WILL agree to for the ability to use the OS.

With Home, that may be the case. On Pro, you can defer the updates for up to 8 months, which by that time, whatever issue may have arisen with an update would hopefully be fixed. You can also setup a WSUS server, direct your Pro machines to connect to that, and block updates as you choose. If you're doing that, you're probably the type of crazy person that's going to be running a home domain controller and enterprise, so the automatic update thing won't apply.

There's an app from MS to block some updates like drivers: http://www.windowscentral.com/dont-want-mandatory-windows-10-updates-microsoft-has-tool-block-some

I was just thinking of something along the same lines. My idea was to rig up a bait box to download the updates and then pull the updates off that box and manually apply what ones I want to my good rigs with the permanently shutdown Windows update service. That way I can research even the security updates and others and make sure I'm not gonna have some issue.

Can add undisturbed competitive online gaming to the list of lost features.  Cannot imagine playing starcraft 2, crushing my opponent within a minute of taking the win, only to have the game close out and windows restart to apply an update forced on the PC during the match.
