Dear All

My specs

3930k

Thermaltake 875 watt xt

X79 dark

Corsair vengeance 4x4gb 16gb 1600mhz cl9

I realized when the cpu is idle there is an iritating sound coil whine coming from cpu area of the motherboard.i am using offset vcore and when the system is under load there is no coil whine.

Before that i was using asus x79 pro motherboard.it was the only different part on my system from today.

The sound was i mean coil whine directly coming from the psu.so the psu has been repaired.after the repair process there was no sound coming from psu and everything seemed okay.a little while the coil whine started again and it was coming from the asus x79 board's cpu area .the board is refunded to me and i bought evga x79 dark and i got the exact issue on this board as well.

So is this the councidence that 2 motherboards have the exact irritating coil whine noise on their cpu area when the system is idle or is it the psu repaired from this problem before causing this issue?

Edit: I changed the PSU with thermaltake 650 watt light which was repiared before(it was not working) and the coil whine still in the cpu area on the board.

And also the post codes on the x79 dark randomly changing while the system is working.is that normal?
and the PCIe leds on the board is stable orange before it was flashing as green light?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3mE8mKYwzo

reset button is blinking and the post codes are randomly changing? iş blinking normal for reset button on the motherboard?
and also are the changing of post code errors normal? they are constantly changing why is that?

Kind regards

So why are you you using the offset vcore? Does this happen with default settings?

+1. As mentioned try default BIOs settings and see if all is well.

i am using offset vcore because i want the voltages to be lowered when the system is idle.I dont want the cpu to be in full throttle everytime.

once the system is idle the cpu multipliers and voltages should be lowered down to save energy..

is there any way of doing that? lowering voltages and multpliers ?

When the system idles down and there is no load on the processor Intel has power saving features on the processor that throttles the CPU down. So long as you don't have that feature disabled in the BIOs this is automatic.

So i dont have to set cpu vcore to offset? It is already lowering cpu vcore as you said?

But isn it going to give more voltage than its need?

one more thing i set the bios to the defaults which uses fixed vcore voltage for cpu and there is no sound no coil whine but the difference is that the lowest voltage i see when the system is idle is 1.164 on fixed mode.

if i use offset vcore voltage for cpu , the voltage for cpu when the system is idle can lower to the 0.864

so what causes that issue? PSU or the motherboard?

I just looked at mine and that same button on my board blinks the same as yours in the video.  No issue's here.  Been running this board since it was originally released.

My suspicion here is that when you're using the offset voltage, you're starving the CPU of the needed voltage (hence the coil whine).  As was mentioned above, Intel has built in power saving features in place as long as you didn't disable them in the BIOS.  I'm not sure you could even notice the difference in 1.164v vs .0864v in your electric bill.

If your intent on trying the offset voltage setting, try disabling the vcore vdroop setting.  See if that eliminates the coil whine.  If not, I think you're better off using fixed voltage or upping the offset enough to stop the coil whine.

Can the psu cause of that coil ?

In the video when i put the camera next to the psu there is a clear coil whine coming from psu i dont know if you could notice that or not?

Can psu trigger that coil on the motherboard?before that i had the same exact noise on my asus p9x79 pro mobo with the same psu.

And the psu was repaired not long ago because of that coil noise.it was very annoying and clearly coming from psu so it got repaired .after that that coil sound appeared on my mobos .so from that the psu is very suspicious.

If replacing the psu can solve the problem then i am ready to buy evga 1200 p2.you cant imagine how i am annoyed, irritated and hated that .ucking noise man. I got sick of it. :(( i also sent the cpu to intel to replace it if it is the problem.

You already answered your own question in post #8.  You said as soon as you switched back to a fixed voltage, the coil whine stopped.  So I don't see there being any way of knowing a different PSU "might" not have coil whine in this case other than to try it.

Keep in mind that not enough voltage can be as bad as too much voltage.  It's your hardware, do what you want.  Personally, I would use what works and is proper for my hardware.  If I suspected my PSU was failing, I wouldn't hesitate to buy a new one.

Good luck on whatever you decide, and keep us posted...

My reset button also blinks ( bad LED, never RMA'd it though ) and the post codes change while it is booted because they use that LCD to show the current CPU temperature when the system is booted into windows.

okay i know that the post codes changes while the system is booting is normal. But the post codes still do change in the windows too.they are changing while i am watching movie or playing games.is that normal too?

I kept looking at my debug screen on the mobo while doing various things and never saw it change from the temp reading after I was booted into Windows.

Is that only the temp changing? I just see numbers like 36 37 43 etc nothing like b2 or 3a so that means nothing wrong with the mobo

    Thanks again

Yes it was.i have sent it for RMA waiting for the reply..

And another question when the rma is approved do they send a brand new mltherboard or a certified refurbished one?

They can send a new one or a refurbished unit. Either way, the remaining warranty of the original is applied to the new one.

The blinking reset button on your board is harddrive activity. If you have a case hdd monitoring led on your case and it's hooked up correctly you'll see they flicker at the same times. RMAs are almost always refurbished boards unless it's under 30 days from purchase or a recall type thing or some other special circumstance. Also the numbers your seeing on the post reader are your cpu temps.

Yes, but as always that's subject to available stock and EVGA's prerogative. They may just test your unit very thoroughly and send that back to you. TBH, from reading your thread I didn't really see much that looked like a problem. Other than the coil whine, which can be any number of things or combo of parts, that can also go away in time by itself or since evga has it they may be able to pin point the issue and fix it very easily. Sometimes its just a matter of a couple coils not being epoxied/glued etc.... or not enough epoxy to stop the vibration. They will be in touch and go through the whole issue with you soon enough. :)
